A few hours after I post this review, I will be boarding a flight to Dublin, Ireland. Less than twelve hours later I’ll be sipping a Guinness on another continent over four thousand miles away while communicating via Snapchat to a few close friends. Two hundred years ago my cell phone would have been replaced by (God forbid) face-to-face communication, the Guinness by a local brew, and the jet liner by a stagecoach traveling twenty miles a day. My how times change! Those lucky enough to afford travel via horse and carriage in the 1800’s in Georgia used roads such as the Unicoi turnpike, the first vehicular route to connect North Georgia and Tennessee to the Savannah River system. One of the four original stagecoach inns on the trail was Traveler’s Rest, built by James Wyly in 1815 and expanded and renovated in the years since. The estate was purchased by Devereaux Jarrett in 1833 and sold to the state in 1955, becoming a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
The site is located just next to the South Carolina border, about ten minutes (by automobile, not horse) from Toccoa, Georgia. It consists of four discrete buildings with the two-story Traveler’s Rest chief among them. After settling my admission fee, the docent led a small group of us into the Jarrett office to watch a brief ten-minute video reviewing the history of the property. A self-guided tour of the main building logically followed, with visits to the shed, dining, and loom rooms on the ground level followed by the various bedrooms on the upper level. Scattered throughout was period furniture and descriptions of diverse topics from women’s suffrage to logging machinery. A visit of the loom room and Meely Jarrett’s restored 1800’s residence completed the main building visit. Another twenty minutes were spent around the three-acre property, quickly taking in the meat house, well, and locally sourced petroglyph. A modest gift shop and conversation with the site’s steward rounded out my hour-long visit.
My eleventh visit to a Georgia State Parks Historic Site wasn’t one of the most memorable but in retrospect was worth the almost six-hour round trip from home. On the positive side: exposure to a previously unknown element of 19th century history, an impressive and original heart pine home, and an enthusiastic on-site manager. These were balanced out by an overall skeletal, bare-bones feeling to the place probably due to minimal funding. There is a wealth of opportunity here for education, and exhibits on the evolution of transportation or bulking up descriptions of the kitchen or meat house would be welcome additions. Those quibbles aside, what the attraction lacks in didactics or pizazz was made up for by the generous staff member and singular uniqueness of the property.

If you enjoy historic sites, this is a wonderful place to visit. Even if your not a huge history buff, the grounds are beautiful and we learned a lot on our visit.

The Guy who greeted me was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the site. Also watch the video they offer it explains some features in the house and then tour the house. It had three stories kind of, you have the top story and the main floor and then in one section you have a lower kitchen area. Well worth the drive out and the admission paid. It is only open on Sat and Sun but not a problem for me since I needed something to do on a weekend day.

My husband and I have wanted to go to this spot for a couple of years. It is only open on the weekends, but we recommend going. We enjoyed watching the short video and learn about this historic home. Exploring the whole attraction took an hour.

Interesting history, nicely maintained, friendly curator. The video explained the history & the curator & volunteer cleaning staff filled in details.

Took my kids to a place that my Grandmother took me years ago. I was very lucky to go when I did. The State had just recently purchased the house and the last owner was still coming for visits to talk to visitors about her home. Nice furnishings from the period still remain in the house.

We loved Travlers Rest, as it's called on the sign. If you like history, go. It's super interesting and a wonderful look into the past. Billy Hawkins is a great docent, and after he gets you started, he will leave you alone. But he will also visit with you if you want and he has a head full of local knowledge. SUPER NICE GUY!

We enjoyed the quiet stroll through the inn and the grounds. The history of the inn was interesting. The grounds were well kept.

A nice place to visit if you enjoy things of the past. It took us about an hour to see a video and tour the house and grounds. The home is full of original furniture and artifacts. This is a must do!
