Very informative, plenty of stories and being able to interact with the physical location (able to go into some of the cells) was educational. The roses were awesome and well taken care of. Love that it’s not far from other attractions. The gun collection was great!

Much better than I anticipated. Their weapons museum is fantastic! The tour guide and presentation were very informative and enjoyable. Loved the back stories of some of the prior inmates and events.

Having only seen Alcatraz, this was an eye opening experience. It felt so real since the penitentiary only closed a few decades ago. Death penalties were carried out by gallows in some cases and we saw the room where they happened - whoa…….
Circumstances were such that we were fortunate enough to have a private, guided tour with docent Leslie. She was awesome!! We had a billion questions and she answered all of them, she took us into all sorts of interesting spaces in the penitentiary and we enjoyed learning so much from her.
Even a self-guided tour would have been great at this place. The signage is excellent and it’s fun to wander about.

If you want to revel in the prisoners' misfortune this place is for you.
To think that some were imprisoned for their morals!
Death row is impressive

What a great place to spend an hour or two. We took the 1030 am tour today with Leslee who was a fantastic guide; it is very clear that she has done a lot of independent research and that makes for the best guides.
The property is an interesting contrast of purpose with beauty; the old buildings are photogenic and surrounded by green grass and roses yet there is a clear feel of captivity.
Do not visit if you are sensitive to the death penalty or executions as there was death here.

Had a fun time at the penitentiary seeing the history of the jail and the prisoners and artifacts of the prison throughout history.

Interesting to say the least. There's history here. The buildings are probably the best indication on how society handled felons through the years. I'm not preaching here, but the facility wasn't near as nice as modern penal institutions.
Unlike some places, the tour guides are not former guards or inmates, so you don't get those perspectives. The guide still did a good job.
We spent almost 5 hours there.

The Old Idaho Penitentiary is really cool but to me was not the main attraction on this site. Certainly it was well-done and engaging - especially all of the bios of the prisoners. And I absolutely would have gone and enjoyed if that was all there was. BUT THERE IS A SECRET HERE that I had absolutely no idea about. The J Curtis Earl Weapons Through the Ages Museum is housed on the Old Idaho Pen's grounds. What!!?? We had no idea this was there. I tell you, I am a novice history buff, and I just loved this museum. It is its own museum, make no mistake. It will take 1-2 hours to walk through. It blew my mind that this was there, probably millions of dollars in ancient and antique weapons. Just wow. Absolutely amazing. Anyway, be sure to visit! Oh and don't forget to see Dennis the Cat's grave in the back of the grounds. :) And the museum giftstore is so well done, too! A well-curated assortment of fun and interesting objects and even food items.

The Old Idaho Penitentiary is a historic attraction that, as the name suggests, is a throwback to a time of the past. The admission to the grounds cost $8. There is a guided tour offered as well which I could not attend because of the time of my visit, but it costs just an additional $2 and I'd definitely had taken it if I had an option. The compound consists of multiple structures, all short walks from one another. All but one of the structures are unheated, thus it might get chilly pretty quickly depending on the Idaho weather. The Weapons exhibit at the far end of the penetentiary grounds is the only building in the complex with heating (possibly apart from the visitor center at the entrance).
The whole complex is well maintained. Some of the buildings in the compound have displays about some of the people imprisoned in this penetentiary and there are also some interesting displays about the breakdown of the prison population by state, race and country of origin. There are also displays about the prison hospital and the staff managing the prison, all of which helped give a lot of insight into the times when this penetentiary was operational. I'd definitely recommend the "Cooler" and "Siberia" area, which was the solitary confinement block. The weapon exhibit area has a substantial collection of weapons on display, including ones that were used in many different wars of the past and had great details of the weapons showcased. Depending on one's interest, that exhibit itself could take an hour to carefully walk around and absorb all the information.

We had a Fantastic private tour with Kendra. She is so knowledgeable and you can really tell she enjoys her job and educating visitors on the property. She gave “fun facts” with a disclaimer that it could include something “dark”. She really brought the stories to life. We had a great visit!

Most of the tour is at ground level on level paved surface. one or two areas are up stairs, but you can go around them. If you go during summer, check the temp. and bring a bottle of water.
