We walked around the inside of the Capitol. It was nice looking with an extensive use of marble. They had a good display of Idaho’s history in the basement. It was informative and well done. We didn’t see any art or anything else of interest.
We spent about 30 minutes here and were glad we visited.

This is such a beautiful capitol building. We were able to walk right up the steps and walk in and gaze at the dome. Almost strange the lack of visible security, but I am sure someone was watching us somewhere. The white marble columns in the dome are just stunning.

Fun, informative and beautiful! It was a great tour and everyone is free to just walk around and explore. Beautiful building and so much to see.

The State Capitol building is a very impressive structure located in downtown Boise. It is probably not as grand as some of the other State Capitol buildings that I've visited, but that comparison maybe somewhat unfair as each Capitol is unique and is a testament to the state. The Capitol is located in downtown, and it was fairly easy to find parking when I went to visit on a weekday. The best place to start a self guided tour is from the basement floor (called the garden level). The garden level is where the visitor information center is located as well as a small gift shop. The garden level has a number of exhibits which provide detailed information about the history of early settlements in Idaho, how Idaho was first conceived as a territory and was subsequently made a state in the United States. The exhibits on that floor were interactive and very informative, and got to know a great deal about the Gem State - natural resources, settlements, rivers, industrial and agricultural aspects of the state and much more. I came away impressed by the amount of information that is on display at the Capitol building and immaculate job the state has done to maintain this sacred democratic spot, no doubt attracting a number of tourists.
The second floor had a replica of the Idaho State Constitution. It was housed in a Historic Exhibits room, which delved into the history of creation of the Constitution, a necessary prerequisite for attaining statehood. The room also had exhibits detailing Idaho's Constitutional Convention, the efforts to preserve the historic document, and it also housed the office of the state Treasurer, which was an interesting peek into how money was stored in earlier times. Unfortunately both the house and senate chambers and the respective galleries were closed and thus could not take a look at those but the Office of the Governor was open for visitors.

We were able to find free parking (3 hours for visitors) just a block to the east of the building so not much of a walk. The building is quite grand with a replica of the Liberty Bell on the front steps. Inside, everything was shiny marble but nothing (senate or house rooms) was open to be viewed like I have seen at other state Capitol buildings.

Very typical rendition of a state capitol in architectural style. The building is very well maintained complete with a dome and all marble interior. I did not take a tour but explored the building on my own which was easy to do as the building is open to the public and easy to enter. There is a small exhibition space on the 2nd floor where they were exhibiting a small collection of gowns from former state first ladies. Without a tour you can see the building in under an hour and it is very centrally located in Boise.

Pretty building and open for free tours, but the information desk was not manned on a weekday so we did not get much information on the building or the history of the state

My son and I on a Saturday afternoon. Parking is on the street and typically costs a few bucks for 2 hours, but it was free this time.
It is a bit of a walk to the building, and getting inside does entail some stairs. There probably is an easier method for a disabled visitor, but I didn't take note.
Inside the building is immaculate and beautiful with a historical feel. You are able to walk right past some of the legislators' offices and even into both the house and senate chambers anterooms. They were not open today, but most had glass doors. We went up the marble stairs to the top floor, where there were some displays and a great view out to the Railroad Depot.
I would like to come back and take a tour sometime for sure.
Highly recommend.

Architects were John E. Tourtellotte and Charles Hummel. Tourtellotte was a Connecticut native whose career began in Massachusetts and skyrocketed further when he moved to Boise. Hummel was a German immigrant who partnered with Tourtellotte in 1903. The final cost of the building was just over $2 million; it was completed in 1920. The architects used varied materials to construct the building and their design was inspired by Classical examples.
Tourtellotte and Hummel used four types of marble: red marble from Georgia, gray marble from Alaska, green marble from Vermont, and black marble from Italy. Architectural inspirations included St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, St Paul's Cathedral in London and the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The most prominent feature of the capitol is its dome.

If you are going a self-guided tour, about how much time would you say it take to get the full experience?

In all honesty, with two hours we had lunch and walked around and saw quite a bit of downtown. I recommend Fork for a bite. Great place. I would say 2.5-3hours is more than enough! Safe Travels!

Hello,
If the dog is a service animal, it is welcome in the building. For all other animals, we request they do stay outside.
Thank you for your question.

I really don't know since I don't have pets. I'm sure you could call and ask, or see if there's a web site.
