The Robie house is fabulous, the guide was knowledgeable and interesting. The house is in great shape and fun to walk around. I’d do it again. My negative is that the trip advisor ticket wasn’t for the time I selected it was up to the staff to find the next available open slots which were an hour and a half later. Not sure I will book through trip advisor again

The Robie House is a great testament of the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright (FLW). However, I was disappointed that it was not furnished. There were a few pieces and some photos. I have toured around 20 FLW buildings and this is the only one without furnishings or decor.
Also, the web site to purchase tickets is glitchy. When I arrived and had trouble with the tickets, the employees were not helpful. I ended up having to buy tickets for a different tour, paying double. Since I made a special trip specific for this, I sucked it up and just paid again. The employees were also more concerned with a photographer there than those of us on the tour. Customer service was non-existent.

Book ahead or don’t bother. Tony group limit for the tour. They would not sell me a single ticket, and I was not about to wait an hour and a half with a train to catch.

Wow. What an incredible place. Big fan of FLW but this is even more than expected. Even Mr Wright considers it one of his best works. I absorbed even moment and my guide was great. Highly recommend if you even architecture or just beautiful buildings. Also in a beautiful area with lovely homes, churches and buildings of the University of Chicago. Have lunch at a nearby cafe. Must see!

I can't imagine living in such a home. It looks very linear on the inside with a mixture of old and new. I found it fascinating. My ticket did not have a check-in time, so I had to wait 20 minutes for the next group tour. The docent did an OK job -- the tour started outside the gift shop (former garage), and with the HVAC unit running, it was difficult to hear everything. Photos were allowed, but I was slightly disappointed to learn that the space is empty (no furniture) except for chairs on display and a reproduction of a sofa. Otherwise, the home is well-kept and a tribute to the legacy of FLW.

This was an excellent tour of one of Wright's best prairie homes. Our docent was outstanding, guiding us through the rooms and embellishing the classic Wright designs with the flow of the home. This is our ninetieth Wright structure, and have become familiar with his work. Just as fascinating as the design is the history of these homes, normally ending with a Historic preservation trust. Wright designed the house for the entrepreneur and inventor Fredrick Robbie in 1910. This house might better be called and The Wilbur home, as in 1911 Robbie fell into financial trouble and sold it to David Lee Taylor, who died a year later then passing it to the Wilbur family. The Wilbur family sold the property in 1926 to the Chicago Theological Seminary for use as married-student housing. They twice proposed tearing down the house leading to grassroots protests that included Wright himself. The building was saved and transferred to the University of Chicago until 1997, when it executed a lease with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Photos are permitted and you're not required to cover up footwear. Most of the furnishings were lost during the transitions and the house is now mostly empty. Tours are busy so reservations are a must. In 2019, Robbie House was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We have visited multiple Frank Lloyd Wright sites from Fallingwater to Usonian Homes to Taliesen West, and many others.
The Robie namesake of this house commissioned the building, but was only able to live here about a year after its completion in 1910. This is said to be one of the architect's favorites, with many of his signature elements. It is a World Heritage siteIt is well worth a visit.
Unfortunately, the building was used as a dormitory for the nearby theological school and suffered more than a few bumps and scrapes. Virtually all of the original furniture is gone. Some is now owned by the Smart Museum about 4 blocks away, but is not currently (May, 2024) on display even there. At one point, the house was nearly torn down to make a larger dorm, but was saved through Wright's own efforts.
They recently spent about $10 million renovating the site, so the building itself is in excellent shape. Most of the rooms are either empty or have modern chairs, presumably for some kind of functions. They have few photographs from when the Robies actually lived here. Thus, you are basically visiting the building rather (which is fine) but without Wright's signature furnishings. Still, the building is striking, with innovative design elements both in the building's configuration and in design elements in each of its rooms.
You will likely love the original windows and light fixtures as well as the long horizontal lines throughout.
We had a guided tour, which we would highly recommend as otherwise you might miss important elements. Our experience is that most of these guides, many of whom are likely volunteers, are enthusiastic and knowledge fans of Wright's work.
There are several FLW buildings in the Chicago area. Downtown, in The Rookery, the building has a lobby designed by the architect when he was younger. It's free to visit - just walk right in. Wright's own home in Oak Park is great, and the furniture is still preserved. If you want to travel a bit further, the Dana Thomas House in Springfield, Illinois is magnificent and beautifully renovated. Another FLW home similar to this one is in Springfield, Ohio, and seems to have the kind of furniture this home is missing (Wescott House).
This is a good site if you are interested in Wright's work, although we might recommend a tour of Wright's home and work in nearby Oak Park. If you are a serious Wright fan, this is a must-visit site.

Fantastic house by an amazing architect. The docent did a great job explaining the history of the house and the neighborhood, and pointing out all of the details of the house.

For those who love architecture, but also for those who are new to it, the one-hour visit carried out with very competent guides proves to be very interesting.
We capture aspects of the life of the first owner and details that make this splendid and excellently maintained villa one of the best examples of modern American architecture and one of the flagships of the great master F. L. Wright.
Unmissable!

Robie House OR bus tour that includes I hour of his house - what is best If you only have half a day? thanks for any advice!
Skrevet 24. januar 2020
I would do the Robie House, then walk around the area. It is close to the University, the campus is attractive, and there are small cafes and restaurants in the area. The cafe next to the house is pleasant.

How long would it take to get through the tour?
Skrevet 22. juli 2018
Our tour was right at an hour but we missed a couple of rooms due to the restoration.
Skrevet 23. juli 2018
Hola, me podrías informar si el tour por el interior de la casa está incluído en el tour por todas las otras casas de FLW de Oak Park? Se puede comprar el ticket en el momento o hay que reservar antes? Muchas gracias.

What is the admission fee for the museum?
Skrevet 16. juli 2016
That's right... $18.50 for a guided hour tour. They drop you right off at the gift store after the tour.

Is the neighborhood around Robie House safe? And how safe is public transportation from downtown Chicago to Robie House? I have been told that, if one were just a little bit off course around Robie House, one would be a sitting duck in a very high crime neighborhood.
Skrevet 3. juli 2016
I definitely would not take the green line because it will leave you off in a high crime area west of the campus. Take the Metra Electric train which is safe and runs along the lake front then walk. Once you catch this train downtown on Michigan and Randolph (Millennium station or the Van Buren Street station) you are there in about 12 minutes more or less. The green line will take you longer and leave you in a dicey area. I do highly recommend Robie House and also The Oriental Museum, The University of Chicago Church, and Smart Museum in the same area.

Are there tour guides who can give the tour in spanish?
Skrevet 19. februar 2016
Justin would be the same as answer number one if you plan ahead I'm sure they can accommodate but I do not know for certain. Hope you make it soon !!

Parking is a bit on an issue on weekdays in Hyde Park. There is a university garage at the corner of Ellis and 55th St. That is roughly 4 -5 city blocks from Robie house. You can also usually find street parking along 57th st between Kimbark and Dorchester. It is metered for the most part but you can use credit cards. The 57th St area is a little closer to Robie House which is on Woodlawn and 58th. The 57th St area is also a great place for lunch or coffee, particularly the Medici.
