Having spent the early years of my life in Chicago and the Chicago area, the museum is not at all representative of the city I knew. First, it is WOKE!!! One of the worst examples I've ever experienced. Emphasis on labor unions, strikes, and race and other extreme left causes.

Chicago has a rich and varied history but you would never know it from the exhibits. The first exhibit, at the very entrance to the exhibits is a video display of the J. B. Pritzker family tree. (In case you don't know, he is the current governor of Illinois. Once a great state, it has sunk to one of the worst states in the U.S. Huge debt, exodus of people from the state, high taxes, and very corrupt government - both at the state and the City of Chicago.

There are many firsts for the city in terms of architecture, business and industry. It was the railroad center of the U.S. One of the great features of the city was the diversity of the population. Chicago was a major center of immigration for many years. The city was an amalgam of cultures. Immigrants settled in neighborhoods where they found common interests. There were communities of Italians, Germans, Swedes, Polish, Lithuanian, Jewish and many others. These cultural neighborhoods provided a sense of belonging and identity in a city with very high population density. At the same tine, you were free to go into other of these communities to share their culture through merchants, restaurants, and cultural activities.

Unfortunately, the museum provides a very woke, very negative view of Chicago. There are always problems in large cities. However to focus on the negatives at the expense of a balanced view of the city provides little insight into the true history of the city. I didn't see anything about the importance of Lake Michigan to the development of the city. For example, the reversal of the Chicago River from into the lake to the lake flowing into the river.

Technical Note: The exhibits are not very well done. Some of them are so dark you can hardly see what they contain. Most are static. With all that Chicago's history has to offer, the museum really misses the mark and is certainly not worth the cost of admission.

If you like to visit museums, I suggest that you visit the Museum of Science and Industry.

As a young kid, I was able to roam nearly all the city without a care. Chicago was the second largest provider of network radio programs and many TV programs in the early days of the technologies.

There were always issues as there is in any large city. Certainly race relations were not good. Chicago has a long history of corruption, crime, and political payoffs. I just finished reading a very interesting book regarding the late 1800's to the early 1900's regarding then mayor, "Bath House John" and his fixer "Hinky Dink." The focus was on the problem with prostitution. Certain sections of the city were designated as "red light districts". The mayor, the police chief, city council members and hanger's on all were being paid off. The reformers finally were able to prevail but to understand the scope of the problem, more than 6,000 prostitutes marched in protest the the closing of the district.

Many firsts in architecture and building construction happened in Chicago.

One of the reasons my wife and I travel is to learn the culture and history of the places we visit. We had many other opportunities on this trip, including a couple tours and several other museums. But this museum puts the focus on the history of one of America's great cities. And we enjoyed all that we learned, and thought the exhibits were well-done and easy to digest. As with the other museums, we could have used more time, but our energy gave out before the museum did.

Frank Sinatra sang about "My kind of town, Chicago is" but until you visit the Chicago History Museum, you really don't know what kind of town it really is...and was. Fortunately, my wife and I live a block away. As members, we make frequent visits to the museum to view the latest exhibits and get reacquainted with the older permanent displays. Located at 1601 North Clark Street, at North Avenue, at the south end of Lincoln Park, the Chicago History Museum is the museum of the Chicago Historical Society. It was founded in 1856 to study and interpret Chicago's history. The centerpiece of the museum's collection focuses on Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. It includes Lincoln's deathbed, other pieces of furniture from the room where he died in the Petersen House and clothing that he and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln wore on the evening of the assassination. The collection also includes the table on which General Robert E. Lee signed his 1965 surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant at the McLean House in Appomattox, Virginia, an official act that effectively ended the Civil War. Start your visit by walking the Jaffee History Trail, which begins on the corner of Clark Street and La Salle Street, north of the museum building. Aside from the Lincoln exhibits, which also highlight his presidential election, his leadership during the Civil War and his assassination, other current exhibits include Treasured Ten: Selections from the Costume Collection, City on Fire: Chicago 1871, Remembering Dr. King: 1929-1968 and Vivian Maier: In Color, 65 color images made between the 1950s and 1970s by street photographer Vivian Maier. Also see the first passenger car to operate on the Chicago 'L' system in 1893, the first locomotive to operate in Chicago and dioramas featuring Chicago's rise from a desolate frontier outpost to the bustling city that hosted the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. Chicago: Crossroads of America is a 16,0000-square-foot space that explores the city's development and its relationship to and influence on American history. Nearly 600 objects document the people and events of the past 200 years. No matter how many times we visit the Chicago History Museum, we always can't wait to make a return visit.

Love Chicago and loved this museum. Great exhibits, simply explained without leaving out detail. There is so much history it is almost impossible to take it all in during one day.
But I seriously suggest you try!

Interesting museum about the history of Chicago and a few of its more well-known former residents. Has the bed that President Abraham Lincoln passed away in after he was shot. Also has a large exhibit about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that destroyed most of the city in two days. I appreciated the exhibit about race relations over the years in Chicago. Not every museum addresses that kind of subject. Even better, the exhibit about organized crime was deliberately small, which made the point that there is a lot more to know about the history of America's "Second City."

May have been bad luck, but there was a tour bus and 2 different school groups there making the museum loud and chaotic. It was hard to read and enjoy the exhibits with the crowds. Seemed to have good exhibits but almost all artifacts from the Great fire were out on loan so that section was a bust. The film is made for kids, too cheesy to be enjoyable for adults, IMO.
