I'm almost always open minded and love exploring new cultures and experiences, but I was really amazed by how much I loved this museum!
It's smaller and unassuming, located in the Mexican dominant community of Pilsen in Chicago (they also have several great murals and some awesome street art). It's also free! (Donations appreciated).
I love edgy, provocative art, as well as art that leans to the darker or more serious side. I was surprised by how many political and intellectually stimulating pieces were on site, though in retrospect I shouldn't have been!
The museum is broken up into a few different galleries. The first is a rotation selection of their permanent collection. Currently this section explores Mexican identity, religion, immigration, struggles with capitalism, imperialism, worker's rights, death, and more.
There was also a small exhibit on youth participation in neighborhood activities and how local programs and community investment can make a neighborhood better.
There is also a special exhibit by a visiting artist, and this particular exhibit had huge, colorful, modern pieces featuring stylish and ambitious Mexican youth.
The museum also takes care to feature Chicago area artists.
I learned a LOT about Mexican history, life, and culture here. There is a good bit of print--not a TON--but enough that I took photos to study and read more carefully later. Print is in English and Spanish.
There is parking next to the museum. For two hours, I paid around four bucks. I would plan at least an hour and a half or two hours to really appreciate the exhibits.
There are also a lot of local vendors and restaurants nearby, serving Mexican cuisine.

It is conveniently located in the city with attaching paid parking lot. The museum exhibits are great with ample viewing space. The exhibits are nicely maintained and well organized. The staff are helpful with questions.

Beautiful works of art to see here. Admission is free! It's a relatively small museum but definitely worth a stop. Even with the size, we spent about an hour and a half here!

Made our first visit to this National Museum but was quite disappointed with how small it is. I wish the front desk staff were a bit more more friendly and professional. Also, there is an abundance of Mexican people in Chicago, especially in the specific neighborhood the museum is located. While it’s great to have this wealth of knowledge for our nation for free, it could be so much better — and bigger! I also think this museum could be better equipped for those who need assistance. I found the labels hard to read with small font and not always ADA accessible. I would love to see this special museum become as big as the other museums in Chicago or even the ones in Washington D.C. We need to have see more investment into this establishment. Overall there were some really great pieces of art. I especially enjoyed the political art portion of the exhibit. Also, don’t miss the gift shop. The gift shop is always a good place to buy a little piece of the Mexican culture. The gift shop to me was the best part of the entire museum. Would recommend to at least give this museum a try once.

The National Museum of Mexican Art in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago was a delightful hidden gem. The beauty and emotion exhibited in the art was moving and educational. A wide variety of styles and subject matter was featured throughout the many exhibits. We did find the layout of the museum a bit confusing in the beginning, as to where we should start and how to follow the route through the museum. Once inside each individual exhibit, though, they were very self-explanatory. There was an understandably political bent to the exhibits, which was helpful and educational in understanding the history of Mexican immigrants and current Chicago residents. We felt a real sense of strength and cultural pride. It was easy to get to the museum from the Loop via the "L" train.

Highly recommended. Our only caveat is that there was quite a bit of love (like a lot) for Frieda here. That probably matches the love she has around the world, but it does mean that space is used in the museum that could have also been used for other pieces/artists. It’s a small thing though, and you should absolutely make this museum a stop. We loved the social commentary that came with a lot of the artwork.

A not to be missed experience in Chicago. So much interesting art, very informative detail and some very moving exhibitions. Great to walk around the area around as well, with all the murals

I don't think there is but it is a small friendly museum and my guess is that they would keep something at the front desk for you.
