As a healthcare professional, I really wanted to like this museum but was slightly underwhelmed. It seems like a waterfront mansion converted into a museum, which is fine, but much of the artwork and sculptures are from the 1950s. Maybe they were commissioned specifically for the museum? I just feel that some displays could have been improved upon. Two rooms were taken up by art installations that seemed out of place in the museum. I also wasn't sure why Taiwan and Japan had their own dedicated rooms. While someone interested in medicinal and healing history might find some value, I can't imagine spending more than an hour here.

The International Museum of Surgical Science is located only two blocks from our home, at 1524 North Lake Shore Drive, in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood, so my wife and I often stop to examine the latest exhibits while we are taking our daily walks around Lincoln Park. You don't have to be a pre-med student to appreciate the strange assortment of surgery-related artifacts. The museum, housed in a 1917 mansion designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw as a replica of the Petit Trianon at Versailles and originally built for Chicago socialite Eleanor Robinson Countiss Whiting, who died in 1931, was founded in 1954 and covers 10,000-square-feet of public galleries dedicated to the history of surgery and an exquisite collection of art and artifacts from the history of medicine and the history of medical advancements. Displays include photographs, paintings and drawings, sculpture, medical equipment, skeletons and medical specimens. The library contains more than 5,000 rare medical texts. Open from 10 to 4 Tuesday through Friday and 10 to 5 on Saturday and Sunday, the museum highlights such rare and unusual and strange medical artifacts as a 3,000-year-old Peruvian skull drill, Civil War-era amputee kit, a working iron lung, a recreated x-ray laboratory featuring Emil Grubbe's turn-of-the-century equipment and galley space with revolving anatomy and surgery-related art exhibitions. As a Civil War historian, I am always fascinated by the surgical equipment used to in the 1860s and 1870s compared to the modern day, all of which is on display in the museum.

This place needs an overhaul. Audio tour was near useless ("be sure to read the placards around the room"). Exhibits have uneven quality and focus too much reverence on white guys who had means and opportunity to innovate. If there's a section about reckoning with ethical lapses, a missed it. There's interesting stuff here, but for $25 an in-person tour would be nice to provide context.

A terrible waste of time and money. We have visited a number of similar displays (my wife is a nurse) and this is the poorest we have seen, ever. Most of the rooms are empty or almost empty. There are almost no explanations. The displays are dusty and neglected. Avoid. If you are ever in Québec City, the museum at the Augustine Monastery is much better.

Based on rave reviews, I'd had this on my Chicago to-do list for years. But the museum proved underwhelming. The exhibits are semi-interesting, but amount to little more than hundreds of surgical tools arranged in display cases. A couple of galleries feature mid-20th Century paintings and sculptures depicting surgical techniques through the years; the art is representational and professionally rendered but, ultimately, uninspiring. The building itself is more interesting than the exhibits. Bottom line: I wouldn't recommend this venue.

This is a charming and quirky little museum just south of Lincoln Park. It's not very big, but the admission price is very affordable. If you have any interest in health sciences or medicine, this is a must see. I most enjoyed the different skulls in the cabinet of curiosities, but the jars of gallstones and kidney stones was also quite something to behold. Definitely recommend. You will come away having learned quite a bit about the history of medicine and the surgical sciences.

This isn't the first time my wife and I have visited the International Museum of Surgical Science, which is housed in a 1917 mansion designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw as a replica of Le Petit Trianon, a French chateau on the grounds of Versailles which served as a playhouse for Marie Antoinette and was originally built for Chicago socialite Eleanor Robinson Countiss Whiting. Located at 1516 and 1524 North Lake Shore Drive, it is one of the few remaining mansions on Chicago's lakefront and the only one open to the public. We live only two blocks away and take frequent walks around the Gold Coast neighborhood to admire the grand building. The original interior finishes of polished limestone, Italian marble, decorative plaster, brass fixtures and hardware, eight stone fireplaces and a gilded metal staircase are among the features which have been preserved. The International College of Surgeons acquired the building in 1950 and Dr. Max Thorek founded the museum in 1954. Its exhibits are displayed on four floors by theme or surgical discipline, including photographs, paintings, drawings, illustrations, sculpture, medical equipment, skeletons, medical specimens and historic artifacts that interpret the pre-modern and modern healing practices of human civilization. From early practices to today's revolutionary techniques, the museum's collections and exhibits portray the mysteries, breakthroughs, failures and milestones that have shaped modern surgical science. Among the most interesting exhibits are a history of dentistry, polio and the iron lung, obstetrics and gynecology, X-Rays and medical imaging, orthopedics and prosthetics, spinal surgery and 35 years of HIV/AIDS. In addition, the library contains more than 5,000 rare medical texts. The building was designated a Chicago Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

I've lived just outside of Chicago for over 30 years and only recently heard about this place. But it was a wonderful surprise! They have various artifacts showing how medical procedures have been performed through the years, as well as sculptures and paintings. There is a life size model of an 1890s apothecary, an iron lung, the many styles of eyewear, and various tools used for surgery. I spent about an hour and a half here and was impressed with what they have.

We visited here since we are in the medical field. many of the other visitors seemed to be as well. Amazing examples of early surgical challenges as well as actual surgical kits from the 1800s on. A good 2 hour visit
