Magnificent Grant Park
aug. 2023

A large city park, planned in 1839, designed, built and dedicated by 1844, Grant Park spreads over 319 acres (1.29 sq. km) of land between the downtown area of Chicago Loop and Lake Michigan. Originally, the park was named Lake Park, and in 1901 it was renamed to honor Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the US (1869 -- 1877).

The vast grounds of the park include Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, Art Institute of Chicago, and Museum Campus -- Field Museum of Natural History, Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium.

The park grounds look beautiful. The landscape design by architect Edward H. Bennett was done in a beaux arts style of French landscaping principles: the symmetrical space in the park was well defined by paths and plantings. Over time, the park became decorated with various sculptures and installations.

Nowadays, the park is crossed by wide boulevards between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive, there's an underpass to Lake Shore and Lakefront Trail. To get to different parts of the park, pedestrians need to use traffic crossing. For us, the easiest way to explore the park was walking south from Millennium Park on pathways parallel to Michigan Avenue. By the way, the whole circuit of the walking paths in the park is estimated as 4 mi (6.4 km). One can easily spend half the day in this huge urban park!

An interesting feature in Grant Park are commuter trains, that were placed to run through the park under street level, thus making the access to the park easier for public.

Grant Park hosts many annual cultural events -- music festivals, Chicago Jazz Festival, Lollapalooza, and also serves as a neighborhood park for baseball games, tennis, walking, jogging. Currently, the grounds of the Grant Park are going through restoration, but the park is open to pubic. Our visit to Grant Park was very enjoyable, it is a nice place to be on a warm summer day in a large, busy city!

Grant Park, popularly referred to as "Chicago's front yard," is a large urban park in Chicago's Loop that covers 319 acres, dates to the founding of the city and includes some of its most popular tourist destinations, including Millennium Park, Buckingham Fountain, the Art Institute of Chicago, Cloud Gate and the Museum Campus which features the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium. Bordered on the north by Randolph Street, on the south by Roosevelt Road and McFetridge Drive, on the west by Michigan Avenue and on the east by Lake Michigan, the park contains performance venues, gardens, art work, sporting and harbor facilities and museums and has hosted some of Chicago's biggest festivals and special events. It served as the staging ground for the city's funeral procession for President Abraham Lincoln in 1965 and was the location for President Barack Obama's victory speech in 2008. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. Grant Park also features Maggie Daley Park, Petrillo Band Shell, Congress Plaza, Lurie Garden, Court of the Presidents, Hutchinson Field, Chicago Lakefront Trail, Chicago Yacht Club, Columbia Yacht Club, Monroe Harbor, Du Sable Harbor and Skate Plaza and is connected by the BP Pedestrian Bridge and the Nichols Bridgeway. For locals and out-of-towners, the centerpiece of Grant Park is Buckingham Fountain, one of the world's largest fountains. Dedicated in 1927, it is constructed in a rococo wedding cake style and operates from April to October with water displays every 20 minutes and a light and water display from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Inspired by and remodeled after Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles, it was constructed of Georgia pink marble. It contains 1.5 million gallons of water and its center jet shoots up to 150 feet.

I am visiting Chicago with my partner.

We have a good hotel. Review to follow.

We have been with friends but are now alone and exploring.

Grant Park is a large open area which includes Millenium Park, complete with the "bean".

(IF you want to kiss the bean take anantiseptic or disinfectant wipe with you !!)

Grant park is not on the scale of Hyde Park in the UK - but it is close to that in size, or Central Park in NewYork - less than half the size- but is a good size with options to sit quietly under the shade or have a coffee etc.

Also, and during the summer there is the Grant Park Music Festival. You can pay to sit close to the stage or sit further away for free.

We sat further away. We had a symphonic concert - Brahms Acadenic Festival Overture to start followed by what amounts to a Double Bass concerto by Nino Rota - better known for his film music including (amongst about 150 in total) The Godfather 1 & 2.

The soloist was very good. More will be heard of Mr. FOLEY in due time.

Finally a Symphony by FUCHS - he guided such composers as Mahler and Sibelius during their college days in the 19th Century.

A very well spent evening. When the sun dropped behind the skyscrapers it was quite chilly. Fortunately my partner had her hood in my bag so she did not suffer too much.

We won't be seeing more of the Festival but the first night suggests that it will be a great success and worth including in your plans if you like classical (or maybe some jazz) in the summer weeks.

Grant Park is massive park and important Green Lung between Michigan Avenue and Lake Michigan in downtown Chicago. It includes 313 acres of leisure and green space for residents and visitors to the city. The park was opened to the public in 1844 and called Lake Park at that time. It was renamed after Union Commander of the U.S. Civil War and 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant in 1901.

The park encompasses several smaller parks and gardens including Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park as well a host of important city attractions such as the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Petrillo Music Shell, Art Institute of Chicago, Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium and Field Museum. Some of Chicago's most notable landmark monuments are also located the Park, including Cloud Gate and Buckingham Fountain.

Most visiting Chicago will likely find themselves at Grant Park doing a bit of sightseeing or simply enjoying some green space and time off the busy streets of the city. It is a great feature of Chicago and place we enjoyed spending time during several different days of our recent visit to the city.

Myself and my wife recently visited Chicago to take part in the Marathon.
We had a few days spare during our trip and this was one place we wanted to visit on our "to do" list.
The park is really easy to find and is a really relaxing place to just take stroll and enjoy the view. You can walk further on towards Lake Michigan or up to the main centre of the city at your leisure.
We basically got some lunch and a drink and chilled for a few hours taking in the views or having a leisurely walk.

Chicago was very smart to keep its waterfront on the south end of downtown open to the public. I had thought it was created by the great plan for the city after the fire, but no, the park area had been there from the beginning. It has been expanded with fill multiple times.

It is a great green place surround by skyscrapers. We are fortunate enough to walk it on two different mornings when we were in the city and both times it provided great views of the city. However, the best way to see it may be from the water with the skyscrapers as a back drop. You should do this in the morning from the Aquarium or Planetarium.

There is a little bit of every thing in the park, fountains and gardens as well as recreational fields and jogging trails. It is a great place to get some exercise and see wonderful views of the city. See my pictures as they are incredible.

Went on a walking tour from Union Station into the city. By the end of the day we had waled about 10 miles, so keep this in mind, it is easy to lose treck of time . Out favorite stops where The Bean at MIllineum Park, Robert's pizza for lunch (amazing)down at the river, Navy Pier , and a coupel of gift shops and Star Bucks along the way. Plenty to do and see, Fall colors are bright and plenty during mid to late october. Not a single time did will feel unsafe in these areas, well patrolled and friendly people everywhere.

Grant Park is a beautiful downtown riverfront park that's an easy walk to the museum campus at the southern end. In addition to all the foliage, there are a number of iconic sculptures worth seeing. The Park is also the location of a number of outdoors concerts.
