Dang what a beautiful Quad, which is pedestrian and so lovely to walk through in springtime! The neo-Gothic architecture is stunning. I also know several people who went her for undergrad and graduate school —both of which are superb. Challenging, scintillating, and superb. One of the great institutions of Higher Learning in the world.
Don’t miss the Midway from your car, and explore Robin House (Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece) and Rockefeller chapel.

It feels a little strange reviewing a University like it was a hot dog stand, and you're not going to find many good hot dogs here. If you're looking for a peaceful visit, as a complement to other south side attractions (most notably the Museum of Science & Industry), this campus fills the bill. Gothic architecture mixed with modern, grassy quad, the Midway to walk along. And if you're in the neighborhood, you're very close to Court Theater and the Oriental Institute Museum (although it says it's about to change its name, so look for it).

Although a bit apart from downtown, this is a must visit in Chicago. The buildings are simply amazing and it makes a very nice walk.

I first became acquainted with the University of Chicago when my best friend was accepted as a student in 1958 and we visited the campus and his new dormitory room. Me? I settled for the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. But I was awed by the University of Chicago. Until then, all I really knew about the school was it was ranked among the finest academic universities in the world, was the site of the first man-made, self-sustaining nuclear reaction that led to the development of the atomic bomb that ended World War II, that football star Jay Berwanger was the first recipient of the Heisman Trophy in 1935, that it once was a national football power under the leadership of legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, that it dropped football in 1939 when president Robert Maynard Hutchins chose to de-emphasize varsity athletics and boasts one of the most beautiful college campuses in the United States with the Midway Plaisance, Rockefeller Chapel, Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House and Regenstein Library. Founded in 1890 as a private research university, at 5801 South Ellis Avenue, in the Hyde Park and Woodlawn neighborhoods, eight miles south of downtown Chicago, the University of Chicago's main campus consists of 217 acres whose north and south portions are separated by the Midway Plaisance, a large, linear park created for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. The original buildings of the campus make up what is now known as the Main Quadrangle, which today consists of six quadrangles, each surrounded by buildings, bordering one larger quadrangle. The buildings of the Main Quadrangle were designed in a mixture of Victorian Gothic and Collegiate Gothic styles patterned on the colleges of the University of Oxford in England. After the 1940s, the campus' Gothic style began to give way to modern styles designed by Eero Saarinen, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Netsch and Edward Durrell Stone. Netsch designed the Regenstein Library, the largest building on the campus. Rockefeller Chapel, constructed in 1928, was designed by Bertram Goodhue in the neo-Gothic style. The University of Chicago also is home to the University of Chicago Press, the largest university press in the United States, and the Oriental Institute, a museum and research center for Near Eastern studies that is owned and operated by the University of Chicago and is one of the great museums in the world. In a recent survey, the University of Chicago ranked No. 3 of 443 national universities, in a class with Harvard and other Ivy League schools, Cal Tech, Stanford and MIT. Football? The sport was reinstated in 1969 and the University of Chicago now competes in the NCAA's Division III level.

Entering the gates of the quads, it's clear that you are on university campus. The buildings are a mix of Neo-Gothic and more modernist. The area around the campus is dotted, as you'd expect, with eating places, bookstores and other places serving the students and faculty.

The only time we left downtown Chicago was to visit Oak Park and Frank Lloyd Wright and to visit southside attractions like the Museum of Science and the University of Chicago. The University of Chicago is one of the leading institutions in so many fields of research and for its stature, this is a fairly modern campus 20th Century, created from the generosity of John D Rockefeller. However, the campus is a wonderful collection of gothic buildings to give the illusion of a much old institution. As an economics major in the late 1980's, I knew Milton Friedman and U of C was the economics leader. I simply had to visit and it was a very pretty campus to walk. We really only hit the old academic quad between the medical school and the Rockefeller Chapel.

Visited here with friends and attended a scheduled College tour and admissions talk. Our student guide was extremely receptive and friendly, giving us a nice tour of all of the University's facilities including the athletics center, the art museum, multiple libraries, the bookstore, the hospital/med area, and more. She gave us a lot of fun facts about the university too!

The university itself featured a lot of old buildings from the 19th/early 20th century but there were also numerous new buildings with far more modern designs which include an egg-shaped domed library.

We also grabbed lunch at the Quantum Cafe, which served a nice range of food ranging from pre-packed sandwiches and salad, to hot coffee, donuts, and burgers, and was thematically quite cool being located on the ground floor of the Quantum Physics building (i think) and open to the public.

Fun Fact: UChicago has over 20 coffee shops!
