We had taken brief strolls through the oak forest in years past. It is only this year that we have thoroughly explored the majority of this nature preserve. There is a lake as well as marshland and prairie habitats packed into the 150 acres. It is bounded by 31st Street to the north, Midwestern University and Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine to the east. On the south, past the the lake and marshes is Good Samaritan Hospital. Wooded suburbs lie to the west and east. The main entrance is now on 31st Street and leads to a small parking lot outside the Lyman Woods Interpretative Center. Unfortunately the center was still closed because of COVID but the Downers Grove park district clearly had numerous programs and activities scheduled for both children and adults. While we couldn’t enter the center we took a short while to admire “Green Roof” growing atop the center.

A 19-acre portion of the woods features oak trees that have been untouched since the Lyman family first bought the land in 1839. This was once a homestead used to breed cattle and sheep back in the 1850s. The land has been owned by others since, including the neighboring Midwestern University. It is considered a good example of the landscape of the area before the settlement of Downers Grove.

Definitely explore the area around the Interpretative Center. There were woodpeckers and nuthatches in the oak trees immediately to the west. Many butterflies take advantage of the wildflower plantings to the north and east. Keep to the east and you can check out the beehives at the apiary. Along the main path that heads south is a community garden.

Beyond that you will find the small lake and surrounding marshes. There are short stretches of boardwalk that allow you to explore the edges of the marsh and look into the lake. One day we spotted 3 great blue herons, a Snowy egret and severe Canada geese on the far side.

A single white-tailed doe quietly popped up next to us as we were staring at the sky at red-tailed hawks riding the winds overhead. We also came across 4 bucks of varying ages (one was almost a stag, bearing a 14-point rack) their horns still covered with velvet as it was still July.

The variety of flora and fauna in such a small parcel of land tucked in between a hospital, university and residential developments was a pleasant surprise and a treasure to those living nearby.

Lyman Woods in Downers Grove is a hidden lush green space with pretty easy trails totaling a distance of about two miles. When we visited in August we saw quite a few flowers in bloom near the Nature Center. But, we did not visit the Nature Center since the visit was during off hours. The trails are made of the largest variety of pavements that I have ever seen including asphalt, gravel, boardwalk, checkered concrete pavers, asphalt sheeting, wood chips, and plywood too. There are nice interpretive information boards displayed quite frequently along the trails. But we thought the trail markers displayed insufficient information. Rest benches are installed at strategic places.

Lyman Woods is nice place for leisurely hike through a woodsy nature. Come prepared with hiking shoes and insect repellant.

A great place to take a walk or a hike, full of both easy trails and special places, yet across from tall bldgs, and next to Good Sam hospital. Birders here frequently, good species counts on eBird. Many special plants and a large collection of conifers. The visitors center has many things for children, including an indoor beehive visible. The Center has many children's educational and outdoor programs.
