1000 jack-off lanterns
28 + 28 + 14 + 25 = 95. For this, a family of three gets to herd through some carved pumpkins. There is no access to most of the garden, there is no lighting of the garden, just pumpkins.
My theory is that the cost to run the event, given all the labor of traffic attendants, etc., was very high, requiring a high ticket price. They didn’t stop to ask whether the event was good value for money, relying on the fact that people would trust them and turn out for it. So, trading reputation for money.

Very disappointed- I went out of my way to come see this garden, and it is very out of the way from downtown Chicago, on a gorgeous mid-October afternoon specifically to see their bonsai collection, which is billed as one of the largest in the country. And it had been put away already. Their web site says it is out from mid-April to October, and nothing said that it already being put away. And honestly, there are other bonsai collections in cold cities that are open year-round, I would think they would try and do the same with such a collection.
Other than that it was a gorgeous afternoon and the gardens were quite spectactular, I would normally have given it five stars, but the bonsai fiasco was a pretty big downer, so only four today. Maybe I'll be in Chicago another time when the bonsai collection is out. But I suggest the gardens maybe put a big red banner on their bonsai web page (there is plenty of space on that page) that says "Bonsai collection has been put away for the winter" because between Uber fares and admission, we spent $150 to come see a collection that wasn't there to be seen.

I used to go to the Chicago Botanic Garden at least twice a year. This year they increase their prices to such an extent that people are stopping going there. Including me.

We reached in time for the opening of the garden at 10 am. The parking was getting filled up even on a weekday. My nephew had a membership of his local botanical garden which allowed him to admit four persons. They have guided tours and a train for an easy trip.
We decided to take it at our pace. Luckily we timed our trip for the right time for blossoming flowers. The pond in our community was full of flowers around the rim. I was impressed by the deep colours of the flowers and the variety. They had so many volunteers and employees tending to the plants. The plant beds were carefully arranged keeping in mind the timing of flowering of the different plants.
The highlight was the corpse flower which was nearing the blossom stage. We were a few days early. We liked the vegetable and fruit garden too. The apple trees were full of fruit. I also liked the model railway exhibit.
The cafeteria was good. We liked the food. They also had a gift shop. They had restrooms outside the gate and inside too.
Overall a good place to spend the day. I recommend visiting in July.

Very beautiful place, very different from many other botanical gardens I have visited in the world. I was very pleasantly surprised. The entrance fee a little expensive: USD 25...Highly recommended! A walk of 2 or 3 hours.

Beautiful gardens, pleasant place for a summer walk. There is a tram for those with limited mobility, but I enjoyed getting some exercise and walking the ~3 mile loop. Even on a hot day, there was plenty of shade. The butterfly and train exhibits were highlights.

$10 to get into/park the car and was pretty full already. Members allowed in two hours before everyone else, entrance to the garden extra.
Nice garden and big. Most of the planting is on an island in the middle of a lake. All genuinely nice but all looked a bit too new for me, also, surprisingly, quite a lot of annual planting. I know we probably didn’t do it justice by not doing the bits on the outer section but we didnt have enough time, allow more than 2 hours.
Good for families too with a large, model railroad.
The most memorable thing for us was the invasion of the cicadas, incredible to see so many, literally see them, in their thousands.

What can you say that hasn't already been said here! I went for the train display, thinking I would see that and move on... 3 HOURS LATER, I'm still walking - taking in the incredibly beautiful grounds! The place is simply spectacular! Mostly handicap accessible, and you need to plan on spending at least half a day there. I would suggest going early in the morning or later in the evening when it's not so busy. Go have fun!

Took a French picnic cooking class this last Sunday, August 11th. Cost was $75. Instructor was pleasant and engaging. The picnic lunch recipe she developed and taught us was not good. Like the instructor, I also traveled all over France. This french picnic lunch was not representative of my experience of the cuisine.
The southern Frech picnic sandwich (of which all 9-10 participants had to share); each of us receiving only a 3/4 of an inch wide slice, and half portion of a baked tomato with bread crumbs and the 2 bean salad, were all tasteless and bland. They should not have been. I was tempted to ask for the salt and pepper mill but didn't' want to embarrass the instructor.
It also perturbed me that she didn't even have all the ingredients on hand for her own recipe missing garlic, etc .That she actually read off her own recipe instructions as she was putting it together surprised me. She stated she was a recipe developer. Why are you reading off your own recipe instructions?
For the $75 cost of this class, I could have enjoyed an excellent steak and cocktail at Gibsons Steak House. I won't take a class at Chicago Botanical Gardens again.

Visited on june 12th; it was very hot so I may not have appreciated the gardens are they should be but I really enjoyed all the flowers, so interesting to see which flowers/plants are native, which come from other parts of the world
I would like to come back when the weather is more clement

According to the CBG website, they offer Household & Individual membership options for a 1 or 2 year period, and a "National" membership available to those living more than 75 miles away from the Garden. No senior nor other specialty category discounts are mentioned.

What is there to see at botanical garden in march?
Skrevet 20. mars 2021
I wanted to include a link to the CBG's website but TA won't allow me to. You can Google it. In the dropdown menu, look for "Plan Your Visit". and then you'll also see "What's in Bloom". Know that they update this only every 2 weeks, so it's a little behind what you might actually be able to see.

Are there indoor exhibits during the winter and early spring months?
Skrevet 24. september 2020
Due to COVID-19, all indoor exhibits are off-limits. No idea what things will be like in the coming winter or spring. In normal times, there are greenhouses and buildings to visit, year round. Check the Botanic Garden website for up-to-date information..

We will be passing through town on Sunday Aug 1, with our small pop-up travel trailer. Does the botanical gardens allow trailer parking, and if so is there an increased fee? I see some posts that say you can walk in from nearby hotel parking, would that be a better option?
Skrevet 15. juli 2020
I do not remember ever seeing a trailer or camper in their parking lot, including two visits in the past week. Since attendance is limited now using timed admissions, the parking lots are not very full. So perhaps they would allow campers now even if they do not normally. You can call member services and ask, as they are very service oriented and would try to be helpful. I would have a Plan B, such as shuttle service from nearby hotel.
Email communication from them might be your safest bet, as if you get a "yes" you can show that at the entry gate along with your timed entry ticket.
The Botanic is worth the hassle, was there yesterday and It is in full bloom
Skrevet 15. juli 2020
Garden is closed right now. But, generally: Admission is “free”... you can walk/bike in. The cost is the parking. I don’t think a library card will work.

Has the Orchid Show been extremely crowded? To the point where it is hard to take pictures?
Skrevet 12. mars 2020
Even before Covid 19, the Garden planned to limit crowd size at the Orchid Show.
Tickets are sold by date and time slot. Sales close when a particular time slot is filled to capacity. The times are on the hour, from 10:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. The exhibition closes at 4:00.
There is one late night left (March 19) from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. It's called "Orchids After Hours".

HI
We will be in Chicago the end of the week and I'd like to see the Botanic Gardens for the Fall colors. How long can we expect to be there? We were also going to try and drive to Milwaukee River front as well in same day which is less than an hour away.
Thank you
Michele

You could easily spend an entire afternoon or morning there. The Garden is spacious, it has different gardens laid out in different areas. I have been there twice, for about 2 hours each, and we focused on several gardens each time. We could have spent more time there, exploring all the areas. It really depends on whether you want to stop and absorb all the beauty of each area, or just kind of cruise through for an overall impression. I'm more of a "stop and smell the roses" kind of gal. You might want to study the layout in advance of your visit, to decide what you want to focus on. Hope this helps!

There are both bus and train options to get to the Garden. You can search the internet for transportation options to the garden from the city. As suggested earlier, The Gardens will have suggestions.
