We took the adventure of a lifetime by taking train from Nawnghkio to Gokteik train station and it was really beautiful ride. My item was missing at Nawnghkio station and the staffs at Nawnghkio station and Gokteik Station helped me find it. I would like to thank Nawnghkio Station Master Maung Paing Ko Zin, Deputy Stn Master Thant Zin Tun, Station Master U Kyaw Thet Tun and Gokteik Station Master Lin Tun. I can't thank the staffs of Myanmar Railway Transportation. The ride was safe and lovely people. Thank you!

Pick up in hotel ore 7.

Is there a way just to take the train to cross the Gokteik and not the whole journey from Hispaw to Pyin Oo Lwin?

A nail biting train journey through the Gokteik Viaduct, at a height of some 300 feet, en route to Hsipaw. This mighty viaduct was built in 1901, and bridges the awesome Goktiek gorge, a densely forested ravine. Never seen such a lot of teak! Our train crept along the viaduct, swaying from side to side. Quite a nerve wracking experience when you think of the engineering that went into this ancient structure! Do it!

I was initially skeptical when our guide told us that the train ride from Pyin Oo Win to the Viaduct is 3+hours but we glad we made the trip upon his encouragement. Took the best seats which tourists usually go for. Expect a jerky ride but with wonderful views along the way. There are also locals selling food & drinks in the train. Lavatory situation is basically a hole that goes directly to the tracks if you know what I mean. The Gokteik Viaduct was the tallest trestle in the world when built by the English in 1900, an architectural feat at that time. An experience worth going for.

We started at 5:30 a.m. from our hotel in Mandalay by taxi to Pyin Oo Lwin. There we reached the railway-station at about 7 a.m. The ticketing office opened at 7:30. Bring your passport or I.D. as the officer issues a ticket with you name and I.D. On it, including the reserved seat number.
The train arrived at about 8 p.m. but did not depart until 8:45. Meanwhile the added two coaches to the train with comfort compartments. You will be seated there.
The track leads through a pittoreske countryside with many village and farm worker along its way. It drives at slow speed of not more than 20 kmh. Due to the uneven rail track it shakes and sways heavily though it didn’t derail.
We reached Gokteik bridge at about 11:30, where it stoped for about 10 high above at a nice viewpoint where everybody could get out of the train to take pictures. Finally the train drove across at even slower speed, and after passing through 2 short tunnels it stoped at the next station where we disembarked at about 12:00.

Tipps:
in Fahrtrichtung links sitzen gibt bessere Fotomotive

It's a total of almost 7 hours ride from Pyin Oo Lwin to Nyawpeng Round trip. We booked it for 700 kyat one way. And on the train it's nice to observe outside, you will see farms, mountains, small waterfalls, oh and sometimes plants slaps you when you pass by the bushes. I suggest you to partially close the window because you will accumulate a lot of leaves from the outside. Sit on the left side if you are from Pyin oo Lwin, but if coming from Hsipaw sit on the right side to see the view. You can also stand at the open door, just hold tight to it! Hehe...

Can anyone tell me the cost of a car with driver for a one day excursion from Mandalay? Start early morning to Pyin Oo Lwin, take the train through the bridge, then take the car back to Mandalay?

We travelled in April, this year. We did a road journey from Mandalay to Hsipaw, with fantastic views of the viaduct, then the following day took the train to Pyin Loo Win and returned to Mandalay by shared taxi. At no time did we see any signs of trouble, but things may have changed the last 6 months.
Sorry not to have been of much help!

Is it actually safe to do this trip, there is some travel advisory for that region not to travel? We would like to board the train just before the bridge and descending it immediately afterwards, so train from Naungkhio to Naungpein and from there proceed by taxi to Inle.
Thanks for your feedback

Yes, though we only did Pyin oo lwin to Nwaypeng RT it was safe, but even if you go to Hsipaw, it is ok. And some local tour guide said it is ok for trekking. However, I suggest you join Backpacking Myanmar group in Facebook. You can also ask there. As I am now here in Imphal, India. Just crossed the border the other day.

By train, it's about half way between Pyin Oo Lwin and Hsipaw,
Heading out of Mandalay (train departs 4 am) the viaduct is after Nawnghkio station you will cross the bridge around 11 am. for a nice journey to continue to Hsipaw and enjoy a few days . Take the return train, and once again you cross the bridge, then the train stops for some photos and continues on to Pyin Oo Lwin and eventually Mandalay, it's a long journey on a slow bumpy train.....
