My wife & I met another couple to celebrate a milestone birthday.
I had my favorite drink, the Hala Berries with Rapberry liquor. The others tried Zombies & whipping creme covered drinks. The table next to us were funny and interactive. Our waitress was nice and very accommodating. Hala Kahiki is a great place to share and celebrate!

I seen this on the “Only in Your State” FB page in May.
We are from the Peoria area and had a week of staycation then decided on that Friday to head up state for a couple days and try this place out.
It was amazing! We had the pleasure of being seated in Lana’s section!!!
She was training Shaunte, (I’m not sure I spelled their names correctly)
These women took such good care of us and were so very attentive.
Lana knew the menu inside and out. She made sure to find out what me and my husband liked and didn’t liked before we ordered our first drink.
She even brought me one of her choice when I wasn’t sure what I wanted.
I would recommend this gem anytime your in the area. They only have chips and salsa so please come having already eaten so you can enjoy yourself w/o feeling over the ‘top’ too soon.

My wife and I have frequented Hala Kahiki for the better part of the last twenty years, and the place hasn’t changed very much over that time. One might worry that an “unchanging” Tiki Bar that was established back before the 1970’s would be outdated, but Hala Kahiki has found perfection in many of the things that they do and have stuck with it. The building and décor have that kitschy island look, but it adds a lot of flavor and flair to the experience. There is even an outdoor patio section that you can enjoy some plants and fresh air when weather permits.
There is a wide variety of drinks from which to choose, so a large group with diverse tastes can choose what they want. From weak to strong drinks. Fruity to chocolate drinks (highly recommend the chocolate banana and chocolate mint rum drinks). It is mostly a bar experience, so you typically only get pretzels or chips and salsa to munch on while having your drinks. However, they’ve recently partnered with a food truck that provides various types of fried rice to the patrons on Saturday evenings. Servers are very friendly as well. They are helpful with advice/suggestion, and many of the drinks can be customized to taste (recommend asking for a little extra chocolate in the chocolate rum drinks to get a little more of the cocoa flavor).
Place has multiple rooms, which provide quite a bit of seating while dispersing the groups out so the rooms don’t get too noisy. Our last visit was with some friends, who we were able to carry on conversations with despite the busier Saturday night. Note that Friday/Saturday nights tend to get rather busy, so recommend getting there in the earlier afternoon or making a reservation (as available) to help limit the amount of wait time in the entrance or outside. Place is popular, so expect a wait at busier peak times.

A great place to talk with friends and share from a abundance of rum and paradise drinks. The drink menu is over 15 pages: sweet and non sweet, potent to less potent, coffee, ice cream, chocolate, black tea, etc.

This place works hard to have a tropical atmosphere..... but that’s impossible in the Midwest. We sat in the outdoor type setting and the server and drinks were exceptional but the bugs drove me nuts. Most people would probably like it though.

This place is an institution. When I started going here 20 some odd years ago, I told my Dad that I was going to some Tiki bar with some friends. He smiled and told me that it was a nice place. I asked him how he knew about it and he told me he used to take dates there over 20 years prior! Wow!
Let me just say, they have been doing something right all that time. Back in the day, there was the Tiki fad which is probably why this place opened, and then it stayed open because it was a place to go drink on the cheap. And now, Tiki has come back into fad again. Prices have gone up a bit, but it's still not as expensive as a club, so I'm good with it.
So here is what you get. There is no food. Pretzels or Taro chips with fruit based salsa are the only food available to order. However, you get pages and pages of tropical drinks to explore. May I suggest a Purple Zombie? Yeah yeah...others will tell you the Zombie... go purple. Trust me. Don't drink, or are you the designated driver? That's fine. Many drinks can be ordered virgin, or there is a whole list of virgin drinks on the menu. Just be careful ordering traditional drinks as virgin drinks - here is why. If a drink has 5 ingredients, 3 of which are alcohol, what are you getting when you order a virgin version of the drink? An expensive glass of juice that may not taste very good. I've seen people do it. Stick to the list of virgin drinks unless you know what you are ordering.
There is also a very nice outdoor area to sit during the warmer months. Hala Kahiki is a great place to get together with friends and talk. It's quiet enough you can hear, but not so quiet that you are heard throughout the entire place. Just keep in mind, if you sit for a while and chat, make sure to tip your server well as you have monopolized one of their tables that probably could have turned over (and no, I don't work there, but I used to be a waiter.)
One tip - go early or later. This place is still sort of a popular place to "pre-drink" and then go out to the clubs. So the line is out the door at some point. And then people do then to sit for a while.
Remember... Purple Zombie! Bonus tip... there is a drink called something like Dr. Funk of Tahiti. Bet someone to drink that drink. You will win the bet, trust me.

Often crowded but fun to visit if you're in the mood for those fun Hawaiian drinks, wine or cocktails.
This place has been around for over 50 years and has a good reputation for fun and friendly service.

Been going here for years for the cool tropical atmosphere .... However, in the last 5-7 years I've noticed prices have really gotten high which for a great drink is not such a big deal to me. My issue is with the smell in the big room. I just can't get the musty dank smell from my mind and it was on two seperate visits 6 months apart. The decor is cool but maybe it's time for an update/ deep clean.

This place is under new ownership and is better than ever. New owners work hard to give you the experience of the South Pacific right in River Grove. I'd give it a perfect rating if they were able to serve food. Don't think there is room for a kitchen without destroying the terrific ambiance. Lots of fun.

Laid back and fun place where one can actually chat instead of shouting at one's companion/s.
Tiki drinks and snacks. Have dinner somewhere else! Great service.
