Went specifically for a family connection. My father's namesake was interned as a Confederate POW at Rock Island's POW Camp 1863-1865. Fascinating to explore the Confederate cemetary, the National Cemetary, and the area of the old POW camp. The Arsenal buildings are a treasure of architecture along a stretch of the Mississippi River.

Step back into yesteryear when you visit the Arsenal. The beautiful stone buildings, original homes of stone, the Quarters 1, Davenport House, Lock and Dam, Arsenal factories, original bridge sites and more will give you ample fodder to experience the past. Well worth taking the Lock and Dam tour, walk through the DAvenport House, and visits the Arsenal museum.

Just a heads up in case you’re from out of country. You cannot tour this site. We made a little detour into Quad Cities and right back out onto I 80. We were pretty excited to learn some American history but we moved on down the road to Des Moines

The check-in process was fairly quick, however,it was the middle of the week. Hubby was stationed at the arsenal 50 years ago and we always wanted to go back to visit and did just that this summer. There is a lot of history on the island. There are two cemeteries on the island. The National Cemetery was not only beautiful, but the displays were interesting to just walk through. There was also a confederate cemetery dating back to the civil war. We were able to drive most places on the island and really enjoyed the views of the Mississippi River. Some of the old buildings were absolutely beautiful including quarters #1 which we understand is the 2nd largest government owned residence behind the White House. If traveling in the area, it is worth a few hours to look around. There is also an area devoted to old artillery that is kept up beautifully. On our visit there was a young man actually repainting the old tanks.

Thought I had this researched pretty well. However, when i got there, it was difficult to access the sites. Yes, it is a military base and therefore there's limitations on access. You must enter on the Moline, IL side, and enter a visitor area. After that, fill out information and present your ID (only >17yo). You then receive a pass good for a few days. I did all that w/ my 4 kids in tow. After driving around the base for awhile and not finding the Col Davenport house per GPS directions, I finally had to exit and re-enter the base to ask the guard for directions. Finally, we arrived at the Davenport house. It was not interesting to my teenagers, so we skipped the tour and spent a few minutes looking in the gift shop. Tried to access the Lock and Dam also. It was equally difficult to access, and we had already been told the M River was a flood stage, so not a lot of boat traffic. Hope to return next time with more favorable circumstances.

Lots of things of interest to see. Corps of engineers is located here. You can watch barges lock thru the dam. There is a golf course and country club to eat at. Civil war era buildings. The Army museum and Cemetary are very interesting. Many older era military items on the grounds that you can stop and look at. You could spend the better part of a day here easily.

I wanted to go visit the Army Museum and the cemetery but it isn't allowed to strangers to enter in this area. That was very disappointing.

The US Army Corps of Engineers building is here and the building is very old civil war era and is called the watchtower building is really rather pretty.

It is across the street from the lock and dam and you can watch the barges lock thru the river, it is pretty interesting to watch and you can visit the museum and visitor center.

There is a national and Confederate cemetery that can be visited during daylight hours.

You can watch the barges lock thru and lovely museum to explain. Lunch at the Country Club, play a round of golf. The buildings are Civil War Era.
We have a Confederate and National Cemetery for those who lauded down their lives.
Google the Arsenal, always something going on. In the fall don’t miss the Story Tellers.
Oh and Quarters one.
Google the history, Cornel Davenports home is on the Island.
A good day.
