This was the absolute most beautiful scenic cruising we have ever experienced. We were so fortunate to experience the tranquility and beauty of this sound.

Prince Christian Sound was our last experience of Greenland during the 'Disko Bay
The heart of Greenland' cruise with Hurtigruten. And a good way to end it too! Beautiful view of the landscape in this narrow channel. We slowed down to see the very small, remote town of Aappilattoq.

This is one of those "words and pictures do not do justice..." moments. Think: incredible, spectacular, overwhelming, 360 views, mesmerizing, breathtaking...
The 62 mile trip takes 6 hours through a narrow casam a few hundred feet wide to 1500 feet. Ships pass each other with great care--including icebergs and glacier calving.
The mountains are 4,000 to 8,000 feet tall--with numerous waterfalls. Not much wildlife for us, but there are times when there is activity.
The Captain pointed out that there are many times when the ships can't navigate the narrow passage. In fact, we were not able to experience it on the first leg of our trip to Iceland.

We hit the sound on the ideal day, blue skies, sunshine and no wind. The views are spectacular, glaciers, waterfalls and sea ice to crunch our way through. The only thing missing is wildlife, We only saw a few seagulls, no whales or seals.

Spectacular! A wonderful day traveling the Sound and viewing glaciers that few get to see and experience. Hard to get to but worth the money.

Our cruise ship went into this Greenland sound, and we were off-loaded onto little zodiac boats for tours. Saw icebergs, a big glacier and many waterfalls. Lots of mountains along the way. The scenery was spectacular.

We cruised the Prince Christian Sound on a 'Viking Mars' cruise:" In the Wake of the Vikings", from Bergen, Norway, to Montreal Canada, with stops in Thorshavn, Faroe, and Iceland, and sailing from east to west through the Prince Christian sound ending up in Nanortalik the next morning.
The sailing through the sound lasted more than a day. We passed tall mountains up to 2000 meters in the area, and several Glaciers as part of the Greenland Icefield. Huge Icebergs were sadly also floating passed our ship. They looked awesome. One blocked the view from my balcony on deck 3 of the ship as it floated by.
The ship anchored up in the bay of Nanortalik and tenders took us in to the small town with red and white painted houses. One wonders how people can live and thrive in this place surrounded by mountains and the sea. But when we walked passed the white painted church and heard the organ music and the choir singing with lovely, rich voices, we felt they shared their rich spirit with us and we were grateful.
The next day we sailed north to Quqortoq, the capital ov Kujalleq Municipality. A much larger town than Nanortalik, but equally friendly people. We were given a map at the harbour of places to visit and we were entertained and inspired by art, music and dance and more.
When we left in the night, we saw the Aurora Borealis. Magnificent in green as it waved across the sky.

What started out as a foggy morning the day we were to cruise Prince Christian Sound turned out to be one of the most beautiful, bright sunny day to cruise through the 60-mile waterway between the Labrador Sea and Irminger Sea. Named after a Danish prince, a geologist onboard narrated the passage as we cruised among towering, jagged mountains. Some of the mountains were dry and barren and yet others included waterfalls, snow peaks, and glacier ice. The sound is long and narrow; hence, only the smaller ships are allowed passage. In places, glaciers are tumbling into the sea. Some of us were lucky to see a calving from a glacier. The ship’s captain skillfully maneuvered the ship through the many pieces of floating ice. The blue color of the icebergs results from the air being compressed. Prince Christian Sound has one of the most amazing views I have seen; the other being Milford Sound in New Zealand. If you book a cruise, be sure it is a small enough ship to navigate the narrow passageway.
