If you are going at the moment to see the roses don't bother, they are
nearly over. Wait until earlier next year. The house is also closed so £14
each for essentially a walk in the park I think expensive.

This unassuming house was originally an abbey. We were lucky to have a guide for our tour. He explained all the history and showed us where we could see remnants of the original building which was fascinating. The gardens were large but the best was the enormous walled gardens which among other things holds the rose collection curated by the world famous grower Graham Thomas. Sadly we were too early for many to be blooming but there were plenty of other plants flowering.
I would love to go back in summer for the roses but sadly not this year as I have to return to NZ!

I have given this 2 stars as a wheelchair user. My Husband and I went there today and were told the gardens were accessible except the riverside walk that may have tree roots, making it difficult. We were assured all other areas were fine. Unfortunately this is not the case. The paths are all gravel and large stones which is impossible to wheel through if you use a manual chair. If you have an electric wheelchair or scooter you could probably manage as the wheels are wider.
There is a wheelchair buggy that takes you back and forth to the rose garden, which was very pleasant, as was the gentleman that drove it, but once there the garden had more gravel!! 😕
This is definitely not an accessible garden and we have been to many other good ones, so it can be done. Very disappointing!

Very disappointed with my visit today. The roses hadn't been deadheaded which would have allowed them to keep on flowering. The gardens looked poorly tended with large bare areas and one long pergola not planted up at all. Broken gate into the rose garden and dirty chairs and tables round the cafe. Very sad to see.

What an absolutely gorgeous place to visit. Delightful gardens, the roses are in full bloom and they are stunning ! Gorgeous river and meadow walks, a perfect day our.
The house is closed this month so we’ll definitely be making a return visit later in the year.
NB you have to book the car park this month
I’d also recommend packing a picnic as not all the cafes were open. There’s lots of shady picnic spots to enjoy.

This is a delightful National Trust property to visit.
We visited when the roses were at their most spectacular - but not only the roses as the gardens are filled to bursting with other wonderful herbaceous planting.
True……there were many others visiting on the morning we were there in June 2022 but it was a pleasure to see so many relaxing and enjoying this visual delight and taking in the scents too. Well done NT for giving all the pleasure and opportunity to visit Mottesfont.
I finished my visit with a walk along the River Test which is in the grounds. It was a delight and so peaceful.
I would imagine any time of the year would be wonderful for a visit but early June if you want to see the roses at their best.

Mottesfont is a lovely place to visit with an interesting house, lovely walks and the beautiful Test river. However, if you are hoping to see a traditional, formal rose garden, you may be disappointed. Colourful, without doubt, but now less of a rose garden and more a garden with roses. Foxgloves, irises, campanulas and other herbaceous perennials create a riot of colour but, we found, competed with and detracted from the roses.
Having said that, the surrounding parkland is splendid, the seating provision is generous and the staff welcoming.
Don’t forget to prebook your parking space as, when we visited, the car park was packed.

Very beautiful gardens and grounds. The only negative for us was that both of the children's play areas (wild play area and water play area) are currently closed. Whilst there are notices about planned replacement of the equipment for the wild play area, there didn't seem to be any sign of the water play area being repaired or brought back into use (which is a little unusual for NT properties which are typically very well looked after).

This is one of the smaller National Trust properties that we have visited. It was a holiday retreat which is why it is small. Luckily the house was open and was being closed for a month the day after for renovation work.
We received a warm welcome from the person on the pay desk to the lady in the house.
The grounds are very well kept and we walked around the walled garden and the river walk.
We didn't stop for refreshments as we were off somewhere else after.

Thanks

Sorry for slow response but can’t remember prices. I don’t think it was expensive but quite reasonable and good quality

Can we take pictures inside the house/ abbey? Thanks.

Like most national trust place, no flash photography allowed and probably the changing exhibition you can't take photos at all, currently Norman Thelwell. But if the family give permission ( most of the exhibits are theirs ) you probably can take those as well.

would like to visit this weekend - staying in the area. Are dogs allowed on a leash in the Abbey grounds. Look forward to your reply. Thank you

Yes, when I went there were a lot of dogs there in the grounds but not in the house. Every dog was well-behaved.

How much does it cost to visit the just the rose garden?

Totton, UK109 bidrag
Last year they appeared to be selling the roses near the main entrance, but visiting the walled gardens themselves is not a separate ticket. Prices as above are for the whole place. Well worth it.
