First of all, the Lake County Discovery Museum isn't where it was and isn't what it was. But it's still open to the public. And if you like postcards, this is the place. But if you want to view the Curt Teich Postcard Archives, the largest public collection of postcards in the United States, you should know where you're going. Founded in 1976, the museum was located at 27277 North Forest Preserve Road, in the Lakewood Forest Preserve as part of the larger Lake County Forest Preserve District, in Wauconda, Illinois, one of Chicago's far northwest suburbs. It was an interactive museum of history, art and popular culture. In 2017, it was moved to its current address at 1899 West Winchester Road in Libertyville, on Chicago's North Shore. Along the way, it changed its name to the Bess Bower Dunn Museum of Lake County with a stated mission of collecting, preserving and presenting the history and culture of Lake County. Among the exhibits are a collection of artifacts on nearby Fort Sheridan, a former U.S. Army base; records of a Lake County-based American Civil War regiment of Illinois troops, the 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment; the Amet-Essany Studios collection covering the career and works of Waukegan native Edward Amet, a pioneer in motion picture projection; a rare compilation of Lake County one-room school narratives; a selection of materials relating to the Booker T. Washington Club of Zion, an Illinois social and civic organization for minorities; a gallery on fossil life of Lake County such as mammoth fossils, including a life-size model of Dryptosaurus created by Chicago paleoartist Tyler Keillor; and a gallery for Native American cultures that once inhabited the area, including a replica of a Great Wigwam. I must admit that I was disappointed that the museum didn't house an exhibit dedicated to the life of famous statesman Adlai Stevenson, perhaps Libertyville's most famous resident.

We loved the large interactive, stellite map of Lake County, proximities to various areas and could also find our house. People and places of local historical significance are featured in the museum, with some hands-on things for kids. Interesting Civil War involvement and artifacts. Great WigWam display that can be entered and more about Native Americans in this area. Our regret is that "evolution" is the "science" presented and no mention of God except maybe in a negative light by way of "religious" communal type groups. Near the end, nice video of the what Lake County Forest Preserve District and staff do, and also of scenes from some of the preserves.

The Discovery Museum has closed. It has moved to Winchester Road in Libertyville. Also the name has changed to Bess Bower Dunn Museum of Lake County . Worth a trip to explore.

The Lake County Discovery museum is an outstanding place to learn and hike the grounds. It is now closed and will be moving to Winchester Road in September - October time frame.
I was a volunteer and enjoyed greeting people, being a docent and involved in children's programs. The exhibits change and are First Class. .

Very interesting history of Lake County. I've lived here all my life and still found out about a lot of local history I was never aware of. There's also a play area for the kids and many instructional areas as well (replica of an old school room, log cabin, etc) with many displays. Granddaughter loved it. This is in the heart of one of the forest preserves, so you can also hike, bike or have a picnic lunch. The volunteer staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. This month (August, 2016) the fee to get in is waived, as they are preparing to close and move the museum to another location, which will open sometime in 2017. There are lots of events held here through the Forest Preserve, as well as a local historian featured with pictures and info, and these change throughout the year. A great place to visit.

We came to see the Shakespeare Folio on tour originally---it's a delightful tiny museum with a very caring and eager to share knowledge staff. Enjoyed the Mall of History too. Just wish they had more to offer in the tiny book/gift store. The museum is Kid friendly. Plenty of free parking since it's in the Lake County Forest Preserve and very easy to get to. We came off Rte 176 from Crystal Lake.

Now is the time to visit the Lake County Discovery Museum in Wauconda, Illinois - admission is free until, I think, the 22nd of February. Temporary exhibits are not always exciting, but the permanent collection is good. Usually the entrance fee is $6.00 for adults - plan to spend an hour here.
