We arrived at the Australian WW1 graveyard on a cold January day, we were the only car in the carpark, the reception building was deserted, I thought typical french, nothing open in winter. We walked through the wet grass of the graveyard and climbed the observation tower, not a soul in sight, all in all pretty windy miserable and depressing, THEN we pushed on the door of the Sir John Monash Centre and it opened, it was warm inside, an Australian guide greated us at the door. Did we want to warm up and have a coffee before we viewed the museum (you bet we did). We found out later that they had only opened on the off chance that someone would come (and 2 other Australian couples had come, even the english volunteers who ran the cofee shop had come in. This was a great and very modern museum with lovely staff both french and Australian, truly moving and the technolgy actually worked (ask about the indoor location beacons). The museum is funded / managed by the Australian War Graves comission and is real credit to them!

Outstanding. A really wonderful history and tribute to all soldiers who fought in World War I. Sensitively displayed, but not denying the dreadful experiences they all went through. Congratulations to a wonderful presentation of our history.

Extraordinary museum; my 3rd visit. Brilliant use of modern technology, hours of old photos and cine available. Moving testimony, stunning audio-visuals with vivid battlefield reconstruction. This is one of the finest museums I have visited in over 40 years professional guiding. We spent 5 hours there. I don't think I've ever done that before. If you are visiting the Somme battlefields, DO NOT miss this. There are flashing lights in the "Immersive" experience, and some of the visuals may be disturbing for the young or delicate. Sir John Monash may have been the finest general on any side in WW1. He's not well enough known outside Australia, even if he is on their $50 note.

An amazing experience made more special by the amazing staff. We couldn't believe it was free. Visiting the monument to pay my respects to relatives who are buried here, then being able to experience (although virtually) what it was like during WWI was very moving. A must do if you are here.

I did lots of research on how to get from Lille to JMC using public transport, with the help of previous posters (thank you) this is how we did it…. 8:53 Train Lille to Amiens, this was too early to get the connection to VB so we found the taxi rank outside the station on the left. €40 for the taxi to JMC, very easy. There were quite a few taxis waiting in the rank
The whole experience at JMC was extremely well done, the most helpful staff! The Cafe was well run, think they could do with one more person serving though as it was quite busy, the food and coffee were very welcome. We spent a few hours taking I. The whole experience, very moving. The audio visual displays are excellent, a must see if you are in the area. We asked about the walking track back to VB station, which we took, not the track along the road, this one much safer, it took us nearly an hour to get to the train station where we bought our tickets to Lille. A sobering day, so many lives lost…but not forgotten.

The whole experience, from the cemetery to the memorial and the Sir John Monash Centre was amazing. I learned so much there, and I came away feeling humbled and sad….. but uplifted at the same time, if that makes sense.
The centre is world class, and a must visit for anyone passing by, or even if it’s out if the way.
Highly recommended!!! I hope we will be back ❤️

An outstanding memorial to the Australian soldiers. A beautifully done exhibition and interactive show which really pulled you into the stories of these young Australian men.

Came here with the 15 yo after he’d had a school visit and said it was a ‘must see’.
A truly amazing place to find out about the contribution of the Australians in WW1.
Beautiful grounds that are kept immaculately and a fabulous interactive museum with enough footage to fill a few hours.
Well worth a visit.

The visitors centre or perhaps better said the experience center is quite impressive. A visit is guided by the SJMC app which enables you to control the numerous videographic displays and listen to the explanations. The displays are state of the art and all movies are very well produced. I especially found the narrative, telling you the history of the Australian Forces on the Western Front, very informative as well as clear and concise. They excel in bringing the big events back to the soldiers perspective. The museum café is really nice and modern and the naughty chocolate cake is very naughty indeed as well as truly delicious. Staff are very friendly and helpful. When walking back from the center to the car park you will walk across the military cemetery with a lot more understanding of the role, the suffering and heroic efforts of the Australian Forces.
