This is a very interesting place. I write this review from a perspective of a visitor arriving on a cruise ship which docks and transports people to Leknes. Upon leaving the bus I quickly find there is very little to do in this small but friendly place. So what to do? We find the information place within the small shopping centre. It is suggested to simple jump on the 766 Bus and take the journey to Ballstadøya. Why because it is nearby and has great views. There was no mention of any museum with good reason it was not officially open.
On arrival at the small village of Ballstadøya which is the island of Ballstad you arrive right outside of the Joker Supermarket, This is where you also catch the return bus.
So walking around the village takes only a short time. Around which there are excellent views of the harbour with a wonderful backdrop. There is a viewpoint which also has a statue in dedication to the lost fishermen of the island. Walking back we saw a small, beautiful barn with a couple & baby outside. We were greeted and asked if we wished to see inside. To our delight we agreed & was shown into the wonderfully restored barn which is now a small, but I would say important record of past times. It is a shame I missed the person's name who invited us in but he was the Squire of the island & advised us that we were the first visitors, and that the museum was in fact his father's new pastime. This felt quite a privilege and quite humbled us.
The visit took us to the past times of Lofot-Fisken right back to the 1800s showing equipment, catches of the time. A history of the fishing over the decades. From the perspective of a visitor to these northern parts this was fascinating insight.
We felt very welcome & this really did enhance our visit to Lofoten and educate us to the very different way of life than what we have in the UK.
