Hidden gem for outdoor and hiking enthusiasts. The pond is greatly stocked with fish and the trails seem endless.

Expansive Trails

If you don't mind getting your vehicle dirty on the gravel roads just to get here, then you won't be surprised when it feels like you are entering a private farm lane for the parking lot.

There are numerous trails with color coded signs posted at trail intersections and several small ponds to try your hand at fishing.

These trails also accommodate horse riding but only for certain times of the year.

Overall, it is an out of the way location but worth a drive.

Bring plenty of bug spray

The third week of May in Iowa brought us unseasonably hot temps: upper 80s to low 90s with near 100% humidity the first three days. Wednesday we got hit with terrible storms and tornado's spawned now and then. I took it upon myself on Thursday, when the coast was clear to go hiking. Bad idea. What with all that heat/humidity/precip we just had it made doing anything outdoors prime breeding for bugs. I had always driven past this remote, off the beaten path gem of a wildlife area in the past and had always wanted to stop and check it out. I finally found the access point and parking lot down a dusty road spack dab in the middle of Louisa county. This place is just down the road from the nearby town of Columbus Junction, Iowa. It is named for a once sprawling community that sprung up in the 1800's. But it has only a few homes there now and that's about it except for this patch of land. I felt as if I had driven into the nearby farmer's drive by mistake but the sign leading to the parking area is clearly marked. I was out there all alone that day which is pretty typical of me as my work schedule affords me only Wednesday & Thursdays off at the moment. Anyway, I made sure to wear waterproof hiking boots, long pants, sweatshirt, hat and plenty of bug spray. My cell was fully charged as well. I entered the first leg of my journey and found that I was hiking on a shared trail with horses. Be aware of this as you will come up on times that horses just "drop" waste material.This area is essentially 525 acres of mainly woods, small hills, creek and a small two acre pond to fish. Hunting is permitted so please be aware of the seasons.
I was only able to survive two of the five miles of trails that day. Thank goodness for bug spray and sunscreen. But I still got bit and sunburned. Since it had just rained the day before, and I fully knew this, I still went ahead and hiked anyway. My boots were covered with mud and debris. And although I used bug spray and sunscreen liberally I still got bit and burned. But in my opinion, this place is a "gem" of off the beaten path type of hikes. I saw plenty of deer and turkeys and song birds. NO fox or bobcat on this trip. Come and see for yourself just how wonderful this part of Iowa can be for yourself.
