The destination we eagerly anticipated as we embarked on our self-driven adventure through the mesmerizing landscapes of Himachal Pradesh. Hidden amidst the rugged beauty of the Himalayas, Mudh Village is a small, picturesque hamlet located in the cold desert region of Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, India. 🏔️. At an altitude of 12,500 ft, this charming village stands proudly on the left bank of the Pin River, a right bank tributary of the Spiti River.

One of the most striking features of Mud Village is its lush green surroundings, which are a rarity in this high-altitude desert. Mud Village is also a gateway to some incredible treks. It's a convenient base for exploring the stunning Pin Valley National Park, trekking to the iconic Pin Parvati Pass, embarking on the adventure of the Bhabha Pass trek, and so much more

Explore as much as you can, as far as you can, for as long as you can.
But eventually a day will come when you can't.

Exploring Himachal Pradesh..SPITI valley..Now we turn towards Pin Valley National park... Mud village.. PILSUR VILLAGE... Takshan village.....mikam village... Kong kong village..Uperla guling... And dhar pindo village

Pin Valley National Park is the only National Park in Himachal Pradesh which is situated in the cold desert area. The park covering an area of 675 sq km as core zone and 1150 km as buffer zone. It's one of the few places where the colour of soil appears to be Brown-pink-purple- green

There are about 17 villages situated in the periphery of the park with a total population of about 1600 people. Besides this there are about 17 Dogharies (Summer settlements) with some cultivation inside the park. These Dogharies are used as summer residences by these people. The local residents in the whole Pin Valley conists of scheduled tribes belonging to Buddhist community. There is a famous Gompa in the Kungri vilage which is situated on the buffer zone of this park. The Chham dance and Buchen dance by the Lamas of this Gompa are very famous dances in the valley.

Mud (also known as Mudh) is a small village in the cold desert region of Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, India. Located at an altitude of 3,810 m (12,500 ft) on the left bank of the Pin River, a right bank tributary of the Spiti River, the village nestles at the base of the Parbati range that towers almost vertically 1,600 m (5,200 ft) above. Mud is near the boundary of the Pin Valley National Park and is a convenient base for treks in the park, and to the neighbouring districts of Kullu and Kinnaur. It is the last village on the Spiti side of the Pin Parbati trek to Kullu and the Pin Bhaba trek to Kinnaur.

We had visited Mud Valley and Pin Valley National Park in June 2022 while visiting Tabo/Kaza/Pangi. This place has no network connectivity but it is a hidden gem. It is a typical trekkers' village who land up there after trekking from various points in Spiti valley. We travelled from Tabo on road and spent one night in Mud village. Kaza is about 45-50km from Mud Village. Our expert driver Mr. Rajkumar (+917876186496 / +919418587325) who has driven us on our earlier Himal trips was the best help to reach the place without much problem. The accommodation are typical homestays with a few small eating joints. We stayed in Ibex Homestay. It has a reasonably good restaurant and caters to guests even not staying in the homestay. The road is scenic and follow the river. You enjoy that more. There are many small villages on the way with small patches of vegetation. The road is relatively better considering its aloofness from the world. Typical night population is only a few hundred people and the valley from the village looks great. It is surrounded by peaks covered in snow. We also had the chance to see the herd of "Blue sheeps" / "Bharal" on our way on return. An excellent place and we enjoyed every bit of the same. The Homestays are very basic with hot water and small beds. Food is also very basic with limited choice. People follow Minimalistic approach here and very helpful. Many backpackers we could meet who have walked long distances to reach the place. But most travelers used Scorpio vehicles as the road is rocky and pebbled.

The roads are bad as soon you cut off from the main highway towards kaza. The trail has amazing landscapes along the way. We stayed at mudh which is the farthest we could go. The landscapes are amazing from there.

Visited Mud on the way to Kaza... not a tough ride on my Thunderbird 500, but generally the roads are bad after the diversion from main road.. on the way, the instrument cluster broke :-) and as you can imagine no mechanics until we reached Kaza.. used bungee cords to tie the panel in place..

Mud is the last motorable village in the Pin valley and beyond that it's only on foot :-) we stayed at Sonam's hotel, he also owns the more popular Tara's guest house.

We still managed to cross a water crossing and ride further 9 kms until we reached a huge stream that can not be crossed (though Sonam mentioned that one Irish man could cross this ;-D)... Mud is a village of few houses and is cut off from the main highway for nearly 5-6 months a year due to heavy snow.

During summers, it's so beautiful, with clear skies, surrounded by green/ brown/ dusty mountains, patches of snow, rivers flowing.. so memorable..

Pin Valley is a beautiful and the most greener part of the otherwise dessert valley. It is easily accessible through Kaza or Tabo. Lot many treks can be done from here or they end here, like Pin Parvati and Pin Bhabha Pass.
Mudh is one of the more known Village of this valley and has some very beautiful homestays and eating options. Tara guest house is one of them and offers beautiful stay option. I had a beautiful valley facing rooms at Rs 800 per night. Cheaper options available too.
Sagnam village which is about 12-13kms from Mudh towards the Kaza/Tabo side(basically the entry to Pin Valley side) also offers some cheap stays and this village too is a beautiful one with a river flowing.

Although all of Spiti is incredibly beautiful and very sparsely populated, the true heart of it lies away from human structures. And this national park has all that, but it takes some planning to venture off the beaten track.

I did not go deep into the park, but what I saw made wish I had planned for some days deeper into the park.

What amazed me was that as I sat here watching the sun set over the Pin river, I saw several swallows catching insects here - at 3700 meter elevation. How they are able to navigate these valleys to their winter grounds is simply incredible. On top of that I saw several fishes here. This river must be frozen solid in winter, so these are hardy species. In every river in Spiti I found fish.

If you are interested in rare alpine species of flora and fauna, this park is for you, as here they flourish.

With its sub-zero temperatures and semi-frozen rivers, Pin Valley is the only cold desert National Park located in Himachal Pradesh. The park lies in the valley of the Pin river, from where it derives its name. Spreading south of Dhankar in the Spiti district near the Tibetan border, the reserve forms a natural interface between the Lahaul and Spiti divisions of the state. It was set up to protect and preserve the rare and unique Himalayan flora and fauna. Set against a back-drop of awe-inspiring icy mountain ranges, Pin Valley is snowed in for a good part of the year and a trek to this fascinating country should only be attempted by the spirited, adventurous and fit.
