Lots to work with, but needs an update badly. Somewhat of a throw-back to museums of the past. Lots of artifacts thrown at you but little context with why things happened. You can almost feel the curators working under the gaze of political overseers. Has a lot of potential.

There is construction in process.
It was an interesting to learn about the history of Iowa. This was my first visit to the state. Not knowing anything about the state this was a great history lesson. We spent a couple of hours at the museum. There were 2 floors to visit. You could f spend more or less time depending on how much you read and the time you spend in each exhibit.

My husband and I are museum lovers and both studied history in college so we were looking forward to visiting here very much. Unfortunately, we were completely underwhelmed. I can't put my finger on why, but I found it boring and uninspired. Even being free we thought it was too expensive as we spent three hours of our life here. We went from gallery to gallery hoping it would improve. Sadly it didn't. I don't recommend even though it's free.

My wife and I visited around 2:30 pm. Both of us have never visited, and I would be hard pressed to say I ever even thought of visiting. I am so glad we stopped by. We parked in the capitol complex parking structure, the entrance off of E Grand ave. It is free to park there. Then you need to walk way around the building to get in the front entrance. We were greeted by 2 men working the reception desk. They were wonderful! It is free to visit! We started our visit on the 1st level, with the Mammoth display. Then moving on to the equally impressive 2nd floor. There are restrooms on each level. What a fun visit. Plenty to see and read. And it was far better than I had imagined. It is very well done. I would absolutely stop by again.

Closed on Weekends??!! Makes it impossible for working people to go! Why would a building that’s intended to attract visitors and tourists be closed on Weekends??

I go to a lot of museums since I am a big history buff. This museum is outstanding. The displays are very good. I definitely learning new things about the state including Iowa's involvement in the Civil War. There is a wonderful room with displays of actors that came from Iowa. I went in there thinking I would spend about 2 hours in there, but I was there for 4. It is free admission. A donation box is available. Only downside was that there was no handicapped accessible parking nearby.

We went here knowing that part of the Museum was under construction. Unfortunately, the day we were here only the Mammoth exhibit on the first floor was available for visitors. The Mammoth exhibit was certainly worth a visit.

Lots of informative info about Iowan history, lots of old guns, the Civil War, farming, transportation, all sorts of stuff.

Accidental visit - wanted to see Terrance Hill but you have to book that in advance. Had time to kill and this proved to be an admirable place to do it. Comprehensive although at times slightly haphazard dissertation on all things Iowa - which is probably as it should be. A generalists generalist and thus a good overview. Lots of slice of life, lots of Civil War (indeed the desk starts you with this, I'd suggest you go in reverse order, or at least see top floor first), interesting exploration of Hollywood/Iowa connection. Really a good way to fill a couple of hours if you've got a break, are waiting for another tour, etc. But don't slight it, there is a lot here. Not 'geared' toward kids especially, but there is plenty to keep them entertained. Solid effort.

Very nice museum about the history of Iowa. The Iowa bike race exhibit was interesting since I never heard of it. The communication exhibit was also interesting. The staff was knowledgeable.
