Lots of informative info about Iowan history, lots of old guns, the Civil War, farming, transportation, all sorts of stuff.

Accidental visit - wanted to see Terrance Hill but you have to book that in advance. Had time to kill and this proved to be an admirable place to do it. Comprehensive although at times slightly haphazard dissertation on all things Iowa - which is probably as it should be. A generalists generalist and thus a good overview. Lots of slice of life, lots of Civil War (indeed the desk starts you with this, I'd suggest you go in reverse order, or at least see top floor first), interesting exploration of Hollywood/Iowa connection. Really a good way to fill a couple of hours if you've got a break, are waiting for another tour, etc. But don't slight it, there is a lot here. Not 'geared' toward kids especially, but there is plenty to keep them entertained. Solid effort.

Very nice museum about the history of Iowa. The Iowa bike race exhibit was interesting since I never heard of it. The communication exhibit was also interesting. The staff was knowledgeable.

Very large museum whose interesting collection goes from prehistoric times to the 19th century.. Each hall has its own style and is beautiful.
However the wealth of information covering the history of this immense country is described in Russian only (very few sparse, meager English notes here and there) which makes it impossible for any foreigner to understand.
Even with the best of will, the whole experience is utterly frustrating.
So, either you learn thoroughly about the museum collection ahead of time, or you hire a good guide!
In addition to the huge main collection, the museum hosts several temporary exhibits next door: "Faberge" was one of them, unfortunately very small and not worth the extra money if you have already seen the Faberge masterpieces at the Kremlin Armoury Chamber.
I must admit that I found the 1812 Museum across the street (about Napoleon's invasion of Russia and Moscow, and his subsequent failure) much more interesting and accessible.

Some very cool exhibits highlighting our state. Across from the capital near everything downtown. Was a joy to see some history of our state.

Family of six with 3 teens and a seven year old and everyone loved it and it was free. Lots of great local exhibits and had a local movie and music exhibit that was outstanding. They were currently dealing with a lot of leaks in the roof so there was some exhibits that were closed but we spent at least 1.5 hours there. Right down the street from the Capitol building also

Travelled a long way to do research at the state library, only to find out it was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Even though the people at the info desk were nice, they didn't know that the library was closed. I can't really say much about the facility except express my disappointment that what I needed to see wasn't open.

This museum is free, which is awesome. It's getting harder and harder to find affordable entertainment and enrichment activities in Des Moines and this is a great option. It is for sure geared towards older teenagers and adults which is also a lovely feature. Most fun educational opportunities in Des Moines are geared towards kids (the zoo, the science center, etc.) so this is a gem for adults.

It's packed with lots of information about Iowa history and how Iowa fits into the larger picture of US history.

That being said, it isn't the most up-to-date and the exhibits don't change often. There are no staff members around to answer questions. So once you visit, you don't really want to go back too soon unless you want to see the same things again.

Hubby and I were headed to the capital but it was over ran with school kids as it was the last day of school. One of the police officers suggested this place. We found a close parking spot but make sure to feed your meter. Right as you walk in your met with a huge wooly mammoth skeleton and a huge globe. It is a totally free musemum. Lots of cool exhibits on the state of Iowa and lots of info.

I went on two summer weekdays and got a parking meter near the front door both times.

The museum is free.

It is spacious, beautiful and nicely done. Both floors have roughly the same amount of displays.

They do a good job with pioneer life, famous Iowans, natural history changes due to settlement, and many other topics including RAGBRAI - their giant and famous cross-state bicycle ride that impacts people and the economy in a good way every summer.

The third floor is a beautiful cafe that is popular with those not even taking in the museum displays. It features a rooftop deck with views of the capitol building and the rest of downtown.

Everything was very well done. I think it is a true gem.
