Recently completed and rededicated. One of the most beautiful memorials I have ever visited. Covers all the wars from the American Revolution to the present. A special section dedicated to Navy Chaplain Schmitt, who grew up near Dubuque, and gave his life rescuing other sailors as their ship sank in Pearl Harbor. SO happy we were able to visit this.

This memorial was just redone in May 2021 and it is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! Seriously, it is one of the BEST memorials we have seen in all our travels across America. All the wars are represented on pillars - listing the number of people who served and those who were KIA and POW - will definitely make you pause and reflect on the sacrifices of those men and women. There are personalized pavers and benches already out and more available. The Vietnam Memorial was relocated from Miller Riverview Park and looks better than ever. There is a special garden area that is in the shape of the USS Oklahoma, where Chaplain Schmitt perished on 12/07/1941 - the island where this memorial is located is named after him. The pier with the silver statue is stunning and has a poem engraved inside. Everything lights up at night, so make sure to visit during both times of day. This is sure to be a favorite Dubuque stop for tourists and locals alike!

What a wonderful dedication to those that served our great county. Enjoyed a quiet visit while staying near by.

It was very humbling to be there. You could spend an afternoon reading the bricks. Very well thought out and planned.

I have a plaque there, but had never been to visit until Memorial Day 2018. And, it is incredible.

Loved walking around and seeing the names and the number of family members on the plaza. Seeing the numbers. Looking at the large number of medal recipients in the area.

A definite must see in Dubuque. I will go back.

This memorial park has to be one of the most humbling parks I've been too. I could've spend a lot of time just sitting there and reading all of the memorials. I wish we could of visited at night, as they have beautiful spotlights on all the flags and stones. I highly recommend anyone visiting this amazing memorial park!

I think it is good for every American to take time to remember those who have served and currently serve in our military as a sign of respect and appreciation for what they have done for us. This is a great place to do so. Seeing all the lives that have been lost to protect our freedoms we have today was really breath taking. This is a smaller place but definitely worth visiting.

We stopped to find the bricks and bench dedicated to veterans in our family. Using the guide, we were able to quickly find the bricks for our relatives and honor them for their service.

Too many Americans don't serve in the military today, in fact, only about 3 out of every high school student meet the requirements to join the service, and historically less than 1% of our people serve. Having come from a strong military family (father, uncle, me, two brothers, cousin, nephews) it's nice to see those Veterans that kept our nation free during WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, and today's modern wars, all recognized with a memorial. The island where this is located is called the Chaplain Schmitt Island in honor of the first chaplain killed in combat during WWII, and Father Al 's remains were finally identified from Pearl Harbor and returned to be interred here in Dubuque. There is a memorial for the chaplain, which from the sky is an view of the USS Oklahoma when it was attached, a memorial for all veterans with bricks in the ground, a wall panel of photos, service flags and a globe water fountain, plus a Vietnam Veterans Memorial with a Huey Cobra Gunship that flew in combat in Vietnam. There are many solemn events held for our veterans, but often it is the one lonely soldier, marine, sailor, airman or coastie that stand in memory of those buddies that fell before them. It is always best to remember and honor our Veterans that keep America free by shedding their blood or losing their lives or by agreeing to take that chance. This is well worth anyone's visit to Dubuque, as well a stop by the Freedom Center and the American Legion.

There really is not much to see here. You may not even know this is a memorial plaza unless you wander over to look at the display.
