Peaceful park with large trees. Well maintained. Asphalt site with gravel area for picnic table and fire pit. Easy access from interstate for our one night stay. Didn’t have to dodge trees to get into our site. We had FHU pull thru. Wished we could stay longer.

This was close to the hotel we were staying at in onawa so we thought we’d check it out. Looks to be a big area for campers/RVs but I can’t speak to that. What I can speak to is the visitors center/museum. It’s small but has a lot of information and interactive exhibits. The highlight is the replica Lewis and Clark keel boat. They also have some nice viewpoints, picnic tables and walking trails (if you wish to do that). It only took about 15-20mins but it was a nice little stop.

We use to love to camp here. Now the weeds around the lake are terrible. You have a hard time walking to the lake.

It's been many years since I camped at Lewis and Clark State Park. It's beautiful with good amenities. Tent-camping at the campground was quiet and peaceful, although I need to share that we set up our tent right where a dog had left a "gift" the day before. We didn't know until we pulled up the stakes the next day. The 2-night minimum didn't work for us...we were only in town overnight, but had to pay for 2 nights.

We spent several hours determining what we wanted to visit in the state of Iowa and chose Lewis and Clark State Park. We called ahead as a precaution to confirm the visitors center would be open and the young man emphasized that they would be there and the visitors center was open today. When we pulled up, however, someone was locking up the building. I asked if they were closing and told him that we had called in advance. His reply was that he was a supervisor, didn’t know anything and was locking up. I asked if they closed at 3pm (an hour earlier than posted multiple places on their own website - updated just this past week) and he replied that he believes that is what is says on the door (which it states 4pm). Needless to say, it was a complete disappointment driving far out of our way, turning down multiple other options and choosing this destination after doing our due diligence and confirming they would be there only an hour earlier. Now we have lost the option to go anywhere else because those options were passed in order to go to LCSP. It’s hard to say what should be recommended for those wanting to visit in the future. Even when calling ahead and confirming there is unfortunately no guarantee someone will stay around and be there.

I grew up near here and was back recently for a visit. Blue Lake at Lewis and Clark State Park was the perfect place to stay. Clean, quiet and some great hot showers. And the sunrise over the lake just about took my breath away. So nice to get back to this park and spend a little quality time.

The visitor center at Lewis and Clark state park right outside of Onawa, Iowa (I-29 and Highway 175) is a good, quick stop to learn a little about the Lewis & Clark expedition. You can check out the full-size examples of the boats used and see exhibits of what Lewis & Clark reported about the wildlife in the area, including the "Prairie Wolf" better known as a coyote, and bull snake.

I arrived at the visitor center and found it closed, forgetting it was a federal holiday. As I turned away, a staffer ran to the door and opened it up. We talked for a moment and when she found out I only had that day to see the area, she invited me in to see the exhibits and the boats “downstairs.” It is a wonderful little museum, I learned new things, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. When I was leaving, she even gave me “a special stamp” for my National Park Passport Book. She is exceptional.
Oh, I also saw my first two Trumpeter Swans (yay!) gliding down the River, making it an even greater experience.

We stopped here twice in the Spring when driving to and from the East Coast. Once in early April, once in early May. Each time, we enjoyed our stay. During the summer "high season, " it might not be as pleasant as it was in the Spring. When we were there, we never had anyone camped right next to us, so we had some privacy and elbow room. We were camping in our simple pickup setup: two mattresses in the bed, with just a cap. We didn't need hookups or electricity. Our site (back from the lake, where RVs were lined up like sardines in a can), we felt comfortable. The vibe was pleasant and family friendly. No problems with noise or rowdy behavior. The only toilet facility was a pit toilet the equivalent of a city block away. Okay, and clean enough. No access to sinks, etc. In the evening, we enjoyed strolling the short walking path past the visitor center. So, for us, this park provided a pleasant overnight stay as we drove long-distance. The park is not far from the interstate, and easy to find. I would recommend that other "simple campers" (tents, basic pickup campers) pick sites that are back from the lake and away from most of the RVs.

FYI Google maps has two Lewis and Clark State Parks! One is right off of i80 and this one is an hour off. Luckily I figured this out so we could go to the right one. This place was cool to see. The kids loved the interactive boat line to pull a boat on a river. Sadly the river was too low to go on a keelboat tour. That was the main reason we drove there but we still had fun and played on the campground playground before getting on the road again. The man working from the desk was super kind and informative too.

Has anyone used the lodge or restrooms? Is it fun for all ages?
Skrevet 11. august 2018
Restrooms at the historical display are quite nice. It certainly looked like visitors of all ages were enjoying themselves. Mine was a brief visit-- no camping.

We will be traveling through here on Saturday, May 30 in late afternoon with 4 children ages 1-9. Will the boat be open? Can the kids board the boat? What else is there to do here? Can anyone advise how much time we may want to spend here? We're passing through this area on an adventure through Rushmore, Yellowstone, GTNP, and RMNP. We want to incorporate education into our trip, especially about Lewis and Clark.

Yes you can board the boat, if heading north on Interstate 29 get off on the 112 exit and turn left or west a mile or two down is the entrance to Blue Lake past the casino turn off, once on the park road about a mile past the S-turn in the road is the welcome center up on the knoll on the right side about 300+ ft is the boat dock and keel boat with a picnic area, we spent 2 1/2 hours there but they had the re-enactment going on at the time so there was lots more to see. We also did the Black Hills and Yellowstone Park, but on the way we stopped at Devil's Tower too, I think it added 63 miles to our trip but it was well worth it and I highly recommend you stop there too. Keep cameras ready, be on the alert for deer, antelope and buffalo on the roadways, we almost hit a herd of antelope in the Badlands, 3 deer on the way to Devil's Tower and a stubborn buffalo at the entrance of Yellowstone Park, he was huge and dwarfed are Toyota and refused to get off the road
