A must visit place. Attached with our history and will help to understand our history. Will take least half day . Take a guide he will explain and he took 400 from us.
We covered Bodhgaya and Nalanda from Patna which was a bad decision. Ideally it should be one day at Bodhgaya , stay at rajgira( may be veerayartan) and next day rajgira and Nalanda. We take taxi and we fixed 5000 for all this. Later he forcefully ask 11000 and took amount taking advantage of being a tourist . In our Bihar and Jharkhand tour we almost encountered same things that left a bad image of state. I won’t come these states again. We tried Ola and Savari outstation but there service will cancel at 11th moment on two instances. Few taxi operators asked exorbitant money. Though places are good but I will not recommend my nearest one to visit the states. India has got lot of good places to explore in a lifetime.
I am writing this to make aware people of these things and make informed decision.

Well connected by air and road through Patna as well as Rajgir; this is a must for every student and tourist with a historical/ architectural perspective. Maharaja Kumar Gupta during his rein from the fifth to twelveth century A.D promoted Mahayana Buddhism. However as per the travelogue of Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang; the foundation of a sangharama (monastery) at the current site is credited to the monarch named Shakraditya (Śakrāditya - r. c. 415–455 CE).

This centre of learning attracted Buddhist monks/students from far off China, Mongolia, Tibet, Korea and other Asian countries. Simplistic dwelling units were allotted as per one's educational pursuits and number of years spent in learning. This Unesco Heritage site has outlined common areas, community kitchen, meditation sections; prayer/lecture rooms; auditoriums; ponds and stupas. Detailed descriptions are provided to help understand each aspect of the monastery and its functions. Yijing the Chinese Buddhist monk who was a student at this monastery is believed to be responsible for translation of many Buddhist texts from Sanskrit and Pali into Chinese. As per Yijing's detailed notes Nalanda Monastery had eight distinct viharas ( dwelling spaces) with as many as 300 units(rooms). His notes also describe the monastery rituals named Nikaya to be diligently followed by the residents.

Muhammed Bakhityar Khilji is believed to have demolished this first residential Monastery and burned the valuable library holding precious sanskrit/pali texts.

The entrance tickets are nominally priced for both domestic and international tourists. The ASI ( Archaelogical Survey of India) in collaboration with Unesco maintains the place and is also conducting restoration/renovation of the ruins. There is washroom facility maintained neatly. Canopy of trees and greenery add to the serene aesthetics. Refreshments are available both inside and outside the premises.

A valuable visit to understand and treasure the past.

Simply awesome , breathless and amazingly organised . Everything seemed to be placed in the most aesthetic manner , be it the stupas , the vihar , the temples , the entrance , the gate , the pillar , etc.
A good guide is must for thorough understanding , even though the ASI has done a fantastic job in proper maintenance. The maps placed in the centre tells everything that has to be seen
A must visit for all

The very thought is elevating...that as far back as 5th century BC this land of ours could build and promote a residential educational institute where Monks and scholars came from all over the world to study Buddhism ....a good government guide made it a memorable experience....

Great Historical place to visit . Ideal seasons are in winters Nov to Feb . Guides are amply available, hire one to understand the historical value the place holds . A museum exists nearby , worth a visit for an hour . Kamla Babu is a great guide whom we had hired . Paid him about 1000 for a two hour service which was very much worth it . Adequate shops selling eatables available nearby .
Spend time inside the ruins and do adequate photography.

First time I have seen the ruins of Nalanda University. If ruins are so marvellous then we can imagine the original structure and environment of the university.water management system and grain storage system was available at that time. One big kitchen and furnace was available at that time.Always, one should have a guide, so that, he /she should get the proper and authentic information about the university through ruins.

We visited the Nalanda University ruins on our trip to Bodhgaya. It’s a beautiful complex and well kept by the ASI. We took a guide who explained the little details. However, there are also plaques which explain everything. The ruins were excavated 1924 onwards. It’s quite fascinating to see this ancient university.

A World Heritage Site, Nalanda ruins reminds the rich heritage of ancient India. According to historian, Nalanda is considered to be the World's very first residential university and among the greatest learning centers in the ancient World. The entry fee is Rs. 40, the entire premises including ruins, garden etc. are nicely maintained, kudos to Archaeological Survey of India for their effort to preserve a World Heritage site. It is also a wonder how excavation of such expansive campus was made and preserved. We hired a local guide @ Rs. 300 for better appreciation of the site and their associated history, presently the ruins of hostel, study place, Stupa of Sariputra etc. are remaining. Its pity to see how such learning centre was destroyed by the invaders. While one can stroll through the pathways to see the ruins, however entry to the stairs of ruins is prohibited, wish we abide by such rules to preserve the place better. Overall a must visit place to witness the rich heritage of ancient India.

One of the most ancient universities in the world. The site of the university is so huge that only some part of the university has been excavated. Ten of thousands of scholars used to live and study at the site. Most impressive!
