This unusual museum, set within a 25 acre park, comprises some 30 historic homes and outbuildings which illustrate the everyday living conditions of rural working classes during the 18th and 19th centuries. These include a pioneer cabin, plantation overseer’s house, slave cabins and jailhouse, blacksmith's shop, a sugar house and a grist mill, among other structures.
In addition, the Museum’s warehouse exhibits an extensive collection of vehicles, furniture, farming tools and equipment, and other artefacts which were in common use during these times.
A short documentary film is highly informative, as is the subsequent Q&A session conducted by a curator.

Yesterday I went to Baton Rouge and visited the LSU Rural Life Museum. The purpose is to increase appreciation for the heritage and history of Louisiana. Just walking through this 25- acre museum makes you think back to the days of Louisiana's rural past. These people were tough. Not everything that happened in America during the 19th century was good and not all of it was bad, but it was real. If you are in Baton Rouge, and have a few hours to look around, I strongly recommend you visit this museum. You won’t be disappointed. For less than $10.00 you will get a whole lot of history. Plan on doing a lot of walking. If you visit in the Spring, the gardens will be in full bloom and will be absolutely beautiful.

This was much more extensive and emotional than I thought it would be. The curators did an awesome job of telling the holistic story of rural life in Louisiana in the 1800’s.
No electricity, no water, kitchen in a separate building and one room slaves’ quarters. The farm equipment, cooking utensils, general store, looms for weaving fabric, everything was manually done.
Life was so much harder then!

Surprisingly wonderful. Didn't expect to enjoy as much as we did. So many antique pieces. Very casual walk through museum and outdoor buildings of slave quarters and buildings from local plantation. Sometimes wished there were more informational plaques around stops. Husband loved reminiscing about his grandparents farm.

The traffic around LSU was heavy. Once I was in LSU, It looked like " Louisiana in the 19th century" The museum was deep in the forest. I learned about history at the exhibitions inside the museum. Then I went outside, I san a lot of buildings. The museum was very informative. Please visit!

If you love history and historical buildings you will love this site. They have buildings from all over the state that have been reconstructed here. It gives you a real insight to life in the plantation days and rural life in Louisiana.

Great place to go during COVID since it is an outdoor museum.
Could spend several hours there just looking at it all.

There are no posted signs about pet policy as I recall, but there are a number of trails nearby the attraction which are definitely pet friendly with a leash...And actually, not that many people at all around in off-season (Nov-April) when the weather is more temperate

I think they charge you to take bridal pics, but on a normal visit, you can take as many as your SD card can hold.
