A great place to exercise and meditate.
Sometimes I bike it, sometimes I walk it.
Usually, I pack a lunch and stop at a shelter for a mini-picnic.
Occasionally, I have had a rabbit cross my path.
A great way to enjoy nature.

I agree with others. The Covington Trailhead is very good. We were able to change to bike clothes in the bathrooms. The first crossing about 3/4 mile from the trailhead is the most dangerous since the crossing push button did not work in this direction and only gave about 10 seconds in the other direction. Covington needs to do something to improve this intersection for pedestrians and cyclists. This "leg" of the trail is a little better than the "leg" coming from Slidell as there are less cross streets (minor) and it is much smoother with fewer tree root bumps.

My husband and I are avid tandem bike riders, having gone on many bicycle trips with other cyclists in the US and a number of other countries. We live near the trace and frequently ride there. It's mostly protected riding and also mostly shaded, which in the summer is a big plus. My reason for qualifying my review with an "except" is that there is one cross street - Hwy. 59 - that is nothing short of treacherous. It's a two-way street and the cross-over is in an S curve. I strongly suggest getting off your bike, waiting until the cars stop in both directions and then walking your bike across the street. I've heard rumors of an underpass being planned! Putting that aside, I think the trace is one of the best bicycle paths (walking too) in this area. Our plan usually starts and ends at the Abita Brew Pub. Great beer on tap and really good pub food!

This bicycle trail was built as part of the Rails to Trails campaign which made use of old railroad tracks to provide safe and beautiful places for cyclists. I rode only a few miles of the Trace which were well-maintained, often shaded, and wide enough for passing other cyclists and or pedestrians. I started on the lakefront in Mandeville and rode to Fountainbleu State Park which provided more riding expericences and is a great way to preview the park as a possible destination.

The Trace is a great way to enjoy the outside on a bicycle without fear of getting run over! We try to ride a few times a week and go from Downtown Covington to Abita Springs

My husband took me there for a long walk after breakfast. The weather was hot (around 84 degree) but it felt very pleasant with a cool breeze. We walked for 4 miles while enjoying the surrounding trees and wild birds. We saw a hawk fly by up close and heard all kinds of birds calling. It was a peaceful and wonderful experience for both of us. It s also a great place for bicycling if you want to explore the entire trace. Be prepared to stay hydrated though!

We are thankful to have the trace so close to our house. It's a nice safe way to ride bikes with children and see lots of nature. Birds, fish when you cross the bayous, people riding horses. My kids love it.

Bring sun screen and bottled water for your adventure. Look out for wildlife on the way. This is a great way to spend the day going from Covington to Abita and if you're feeling up to it, you can hike it all the way to Mandeville. There are plenty of places to stop for supplies or something to eat. This is a path everyone in the family can enjoy.

This biking and walking trailhead can easily be found in downtown Covington. The Brooks' Bike Shop is actually on the trail if you are wanting to rent a bike. It is a lovely idea to use the trail to work off your wonderful lunch at New Orleans Food and Spirits also in town.
