San Francisco plantation is closed to the public. It has been purchased by an oil company. Not sure why they don’t keep this beautiful, historic place open.

I toured beautiful and unique San Francisco Plantation on July 25th with a friend. We drove down from Natchez. I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the experience. Our tour guide was Ruby. She was fabulous. The house is totally unique. Colorful. Interesting. The history is unique and also sad. The plantation will soon close to tours. I'm very sad to learn this. Marathon petroleum company restored and maintained this historic house for many decades. I am grateful to them. I hope that they will reconsider and maintain it open as a museum so that others can continue to enjoy this beautiful property.

A fun addition to any day trip! I visited San Francisco as a part of a larger tour of multiple plantations, and I enjoyed this one. The architecture of the house is to die for, and our guide was knowledgeable to a lot of history surrounding the house. There are also slaves quarters and a small schoolhouse to tour as well. Visit while you still can.

The house and grounds are beautiful. The cost of the plantation is $10 per person. I would try make this a day trip because the pricing is a little high. The ladies working there were very rude. I would have minded to pay $40 for our family of four, but they were so nasty .. I paid my sister $10 to walk around and take pictures. With or without the tour it’s $10. The plantations website needs to be updated .

We arrived a half hour late for the 12:30 tour, and upon hearing that we would be unable to tour at a later time, the folks at San Francisco graciously let us join the tour already in progress. Not only that, the tour guide, Ruby, went back through the home with us after she had finished the main tour and personally showed us what we had missed. So appreciative of such gracious hospitality by the staff of this truly unique plantation home.

We really enjoyed our tour with Ruby. She was really engaging and answered all of our questions...she clearly knew her stuff. While we hadn’t been on many plantation tours, everyone from my teenagers to in-laws (ages 12-80) really enjoyed the step back in time.

I have toured this plantation five years ago and wanted to tour it again with a friend. I made my reservations months ago long before the coronavirus had shown up in this country. Based on my doctor's advice as well as the governor of my state, I requested to cancel the reservation. the reservation clearly stated that it could be canceled up to 24 hours before the tour. I made the reservation on the San Francisco Plantation web site but when I called they said their web site used Once There for booking. The number for the refund is clearly shown on the reservation. I called Once There Booking which said I must contact the plantation. The plantation said I must contact Once There...Damn looks like a run around to me. This is completely unacceptable to ask senior citizens with increased risk medical conditions to attend or lose their money. STAY AWAY from this tour until they begin treating the "guest" to roadman tactics.

We had a great tour, from start to finish. Amazed at how each room was elaborately design and finished from painted ceilings done in 24 karate gold gilding, to a spring, summer, fall & winter ceiling scene. The finished details in ever room from ceiling to window covering to bedding and furniture. This was truly amazing home.

Due to time constrains, and also because there are too many plantations on the River Road (and each is 20-25USD/adult), we only visited and took pictures from outside

I didn’t have a lot of time on a recent business trip, but I did want to check out a few plantations. Fortunately the first place I went was this particular one. The house tour lasts a little bit less than an hour and you can spend about another hour tour of the grounds. The grounds are well manicured, and contain a slave dwelling, a school, and many beautiful trees.
The house itself is phenomenal! Lots of beautiful colors, Moorish designed cisterns flank this opulent mansion.
What makes this one unique, aside from its unusual appearance, is the amount of information about the family that started the plantation. Nearly demolished, Marathon Oil agreed to save the house and have invested tens of millions to its preservation.
Quite a bit is known about its owners because over the years family members have come from as far as Germany to contribute information, furniture, hand written letters and other items that belong to the home. Although it had sat vacant for several years, it had been fairly well-maintained for the most part.
You can have a wedding on the grounds or special events. The house is wonderful and you can go through it, but you cannot take any photos inside. You can take plenty of photos of the exterior though.
Aside from that stunning beauty, I was taken aback by the ingenuity of its residence. One of the oldest showers in existence is located in the lower floor of the home, for example.
I would absolutely recommend you take this tour. It’s a little bit a ways from the other plantations on the river road, but it’s really not that far. If you see this you should still have enough time if you get there early to see two or three other plantations as well.

About an hour just in the house. You can walk around the grounds and see the school house that was brought there that is authentic to the time and era and an existing house where workers would have stayed. You can do this on your own. I just feel in love with the house and its beautiful wood work and ceilings.

After seeing the pictures of the interior of this plantation I was planning on adding the tour to our itinerary but several reviews state that pictures are not allowed. I don't, as a rule, spend my money if I can't take photos, so which is it? Photos or no photos? All other plantations not only allow but encourage photos.

No pictures allowed inside. However, the outside was really pretty and we took several pics of the exterior.
