The history of Chretien Point Plantation dates to the 1830s. Notorious pirate and gambler Jean Lafitte took up residence at one time. Two Civil War battles that were fought on its grounds. And tour guides tell tales of ghosts who still walk the halls of the mansion, including Lafitte and Confederate soldiers and the original owner, Hypolite Chretien II, who died of yellow fever in 1839. There also are stories of buried treasure on the properety. Chretien Point is a pre-Civil War, two-story, 12-room red brick mansion located on 20 acres on the banks of Bayou Bourbeaux, two miles southwest of Sunset, Louisiana, 14 miles north of Lafayette, Louisiana, in St. Landry Parish. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Originally, the plantation covered 3,000 acres and was worked by 500 slaves. Eventually the land holdings grew to 10,000 acres. During the Civil War, two battles were fought near and around the plantation. The Battle of Buzzard's Prairie on October 15, 1863 was fought in the cotton fields in front of the mansion. On November 3-4, 1864, the Battle of Bayou Bourbeaux was fought nearby. See the bullet hole on one of the front doors. Perhaps the most interesting story of all involves the grand staircase at Chretien Point. A replica was used in the epic movie Gone With The Wind, where Scarlett O'Hara shot a pillaging Union soldier. Curiously, in the early l840s, Chretien's widow shot and killed an intruder on the staircase, where bloodstains remain to this day. Today, Chretien Point is operated as a bed-and-breakfast and a wedding site while also offering guided tours on a limited basis. Don't forget to look for the bullet hole and the bloodstains.

Passed by for a tour and photos but it's now a private residence. I'd love to see the Gone with the Wind staircase.

My friends mom use to take us out here for a thrill as teenagers. It was always a great time. Plantations are always exciting to tour especially when you have someone that knows so much about them. If you are into history and learning about old plantations we recommend you to check it out. Just driving down the roads at night is exciting and makes your hair on your arms rise.

Each plantation home has a story and a background. This one is great! They have tours which take you through the home and the grounds. Great for couple or family. The Ghost stories are awesome.

I had been warned that Chretien point was no longer open to the public, but I wanted to see it for myself. It was a beautiful plantation home, but considering the length of the drive from Lafayette and the difficulty in actually seeing much of the home from the road, I cannot recommend that people take the time to go by. It just is not worth the time it takes considering how little you can see.

Wow -- we attended the wedding of a family member at Chretien Point and were definitely not disappointed. The actual wedding ceremony was held outside and was beautiful. Then parts of the first floor were used for the reception, as well as parts of the outside area. It was truly beautiful at night. The food was great. The wedding couple also spent their honeymoon night upstairs -- how romantic.

My sister and I drove around half lost for a couple of hours, wondering why there weren't any signs pointing the way, then we found it. We also found out that it is now a private residence and is not open for tours of any kind. You can view it from the road, the house and grounds are beautiful.

I’m a bit of a skeptic to say the least. I’ve been to this plantation countless times and to my surprise, NOTHING…. This is truly a beautiful place to visit but don’t expecting to find any ghost. I work as a patrol deputy here in the parish and I make it my business to check this place out often. I guess I aloud all the folk tales to get the best of me and forgot to really enjoy the beauty of this magnificent structure. I’ve walked the grounds at night only to discover it is full of lost or stray animals. Nice place to visit, so do come by.

My boyfriend and I visited the ole plantation, chretien point. I stood on the stairwell where the pirate or hooligan was told to be shot. He took a picture of me and above my head is an orange glow of a man's face, beard and a mask over his eyes. There was no one there in the room except him, I and the tour guide. I still have the photo and everyone is surprised. When we walked out on the balcony it was if we had stepped thru a time wave, we both looked at each other and said at the same time, did you feel that? We replayed it and it was so strange, felt as if we had walked thru a film of some sort. We enjoyed the visit, didn't stay all night tho, but it was very interesting.
