Very beautiful. It’s peaceful and has interesting headstones to look at. The hills and trees are pretty. It was a nice drive to take a look around.

I thought there would be more flowers but didn't see many as I drove through. Interesting walking around the older section reading headstones.

It's a beautiful cemetery with some great landscaping, even though it was mid-April and nothing had bloomed yet. It was brown and barren and fitting for a Stephen King novel! It's the second oldest garden cemetery in the country after Mount Auburn in Boston, which it was modeled on. There are gravesites of a U.S. Vice-President, congressmen, senators, ambassadors, Civil War generals, lumber barons, a few actors, and a Maine governor. A scene from the movie Pet Sematary was filmed here, where Stephen King played a cameo role as the minister. It's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's a great cemetery to walk in and reflect.

We were briefly introduced to the Mount Hope cemetery on the Stephen King tour and returned the next afternoon to spend more time here. If you choose to walk, give yourself at least an hour to wander. There is so much to take in and appreciate. The cemetery is very well maintained and especially great on a cloudy day. Definitely worth the trip if you are in the area!

We visited the Mt. Hope Cemetery because of our fascination with Stephen King. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained and we enjoyed learning about the history. There is a YouTube video to guide visitors to graves of interest

That was my first thought. But it was very unique and beautiful. We went here before the SK Tour in the morning and it was cool to see the tie-in's. If I did the trip over again I might do this trip after the SK Tour to spend more time.

We love looking at cemeteries and this one is really pretty and has some old graves. We drove through and looked at some of the older sections. Some areas needed to have the grass cut but we did see workers on site so maybe they are just understaffed right now. We spotted squirrels and a groundhog while we were there. If you are a cemetery buff, this one is definitely worth a stop. Found out later that the scene from "Pet Sematary" where Stephen King presides over a child’s funeral was filmed at Mount Hope.

The wife and I are fans of "Garden Cemeteries". Modern Cemeteries are somewhat stark and plain compared to how generations of the past honored and spent time with their departed loved ones. There are a couple of Garden Cemeteries close to where we love in Georgia, but sadly the local population doesn't hold their ancestors in as high a regard as the good people of Bangor do, and those places are covered in graffiti and many of the markers are purposely and maliciously damaged. We spent several hours walking through Mount Hope and in all that time not a single graffiti mark was spotted, and the two instances of damaged markers I encountered were clearly a combination of age and plant intrusion. The level of care, love and devotion to this Cemetery is without equal in my experience. I saw a number of markers indicating birth dates stretching back before the American Revolution. Simply a beautiful way to spend several hours walking and exploring.

Being a Stephen King fan it was only a matter until I actually drove in, instead of passing it by. I'm really not a fan of visiting cemeteries but had some down time in Bangor. I am happy that I ventured in here. Its a really beautiful place and I was really surprised at the age of the memorials here. I have never seen any this old before.
Happy that its closed at night though... pretty sure it would be scary as hell then.

We made it here doing a self guided Stephen King tour, but the place is awesome. It is very peaceful and beautiful. There is tons of history to be found here. Vice President Hannibal Hamlin is buried here as well. I know people do not usually visit cemeteries unless a loved one is buried there, but this cemetery the locals use as a place for exercise.

Where exactly in the cemetery is the Hannibal Hamlin gravesite?

As I recall the Hannibal Hamlin gravesite is on the hillside that faces the Penobscot river and is up from the street that runs from Bangor to UMaine. If you go in the main front gate on the river side you will see an avenue that goes off to the right. You will see a large civil war memorial. The Hamlin family gravesite is further along that avenue and up the hill.

Both my deceased grandparents are buried here. I will be visiting for the first time from out of state in July. Is there staff available to point me in the right direction to view family buried here?
