The 26th foot high Mount Battie Tower can be seen from downtown Camden. This 1921 Tower is today part of Camden Hills State Park which is 2 miles north on US1 from Camden. The cost to enter the State Park is $6. Driving distance from the parks entrance to the top of Mount Battie is less than 4 miles. There is a walking trail that is ranked as moderate.
Regardless if you drive on trek, the vistas from Mount Battie are superb. The entire coastal area of Camden can be observed as well as the expanse of Penobscot Bay.
Historically, there was a house which turned into a recreation center in 1899. A Carriage Road was developed for visitors. By 1920 the complex was torn down, partly due to a devasting fire in the area.
In 1921, the 26th foot stone structure was put in place to commemorate those who were part of WWI. There is a plague on front of the tower that reads: “In grateful recognition of the services of the men and women of Camden in the World War, 1914-1918.
At the time of our visit the Tower was being refurbished. In his latter years, Teddy Roosevelt even climbed around Mount Battie.
Camden Hills state Park does have 30 miles of trails and 5 trail heads. There is also camping.

What a great view of Camden and the surrounding area. Since we're seniors, we only had to pay $2 a person for the drive to the top. Well worth it. It was a clear and beautiful day so the views were lovely. You can walk around and see different views - or just sit on some of the larger rocks and relax. So glad we did it.

the views from the top are gorgeous. We were disappointed that the Tower is closed this summer but there are many other places where we were able to enjoy those breathtaking views. It was cloudy the morning we were there and that added another dimension of beauty to our visit. We will definitely be going back once the work on the Tower is completed, and will take a nicer camera to capture the beauty of the top of Mt Battie.

The view at the top was beautiful! Easy to get to and even with a small crowd there’s still room to see and take photos!
Small fee since it’s in a state park but worth the money!

You can drive to the top of the mountain and even hike. Better go after the morning fog clears or you won't see much. Across the street is a shore trail. Easy to hike along a steep cliff. No water access.

Beautiful area that isn't too busy with tourists in the summer months. Some decent trails and beautiful views. It's a shirt drive up and back down ( about 1/2 mile) and easy enough to walk up the main road or hike one of the trails up. There's a lookout tower but unfortunately, you can go in/on it as there's work be done around it so it's closed for the summer.

The views are spectacular. It’s a quick drive where you are able to walk around and admire the views. I believe there are hiking trails you can access to do more exploring.

The road is recently paved and the view up top is incredible. We had a beautiful day in July and it was perfect. One must do while here in Camden.

If you are not a hiker like myself, you can still enjoy the beauty of Mount Battie. You can drive to the top. There is plenty of parking. If you would like to return the same day, just hold onto your receipt and you can come back at any time. Reminded me of a mini Cadillac mountain. Breathtaking views from the top.

Great views at the top via the road, however the park does not open until 9am so sunrises are not an option unless you hike up to the top. As far as sunsets, there is no way to see them as trees block the view. Very clean and nice popel at the gate. It's only a mile or so from the lovely seaside village of Camden.

The park is open 9am to sunset unless otherwise noted at the gate. The Mount Battie road from Nov 1st to May 1st depends on weather and staffing. Phone 207-236-3109. More information can be found on the Maine State Government website and searching for state parks.

Yes, fireworks can be viewed from the summit of Mt. Battie. It's a different perspective, looking down rather than up. The fireworks usually are shot from a barge in the harbor - about 1.5 miles from the summit.
We used to allow people to drive to the summit (the road usually closes at sunset) but the number of people and the behavior of a few became unmanageable. Vehicular access ended in 2016.... No good deed goes unpunished best explains the issues park staff faced trying to accommodate over 100 cars in a small area.
You may walk the 1.5 miles (normal use fees apply) and view the fireworks from the summit.

We were planning on hiking Mount Battie with our daughter over the summer. She will be 13 months and in a hiking pack on my back, will it be ok to do?
Skrevet 19. januar 2018
The park has over 25 miles of hiking trails. Many have views along the way while some offer easier grades. I'm certain that you'll find a suitable trail. Be sure to ask our staff for their recommendations when you enter the park.

Hi, knose2002. What would you like to know about this attraction? We will be in the area in a couple weeks. Is the road to the top paved? Room to pass on oncoming car? Thank you.
Skrevet 4. september 2017
The road is paved, two-laned and 1.5 miles in length. Tour buses and motorhomes can climb/descend it with no problem.

Can we hike up the toll road in the winter, or is it off limits to pedestrians? Also, are there sledding hills in the park?
We're planning on being in the area around Christmas and would like to enjoy the park if possible, with young children.
Skrevet 5. desember 2016
There is a parking lot so you may always park and hike up the mountain year round. No sledding hills that I know of but the town owns a ski mountain called the snow bowl that you can sled at.
Skrevet 7. september 2017
I should have been more specific - when does the road close for the winter?
Skrevet 29. september 2016
I believe they close it right after thanksgiving. That is when they light up a huge star at the top of the mountain. Not 100% sure though. They may close it after Columbus day.
Skrevet 7. september 2017
We were there Sept 24th and the Park Ranger advised close was 7pm. If you have a car keep this time in mind as you'll pay $6 per person (if you're a non-Maine resident) - we drove in for the sunset and didn't have time to explore anything else.
