Despite the museum being closed for COVID19, the hill top view of the ocean and buildings below is stunning. The well preserved, simple buildings add a picturesque touch to the entire scene. Great for photographing in the afternoon light!

The building are lovely, the artwork excellent, but portions are closed due to covid. Great location for sunset- quiet, benches, breeze, simple enough dirt road getting there and the cemetery is just down the hill- historic, old, Thomas Edison relatives buried there. The lighthouse is part of the structures

The woman who checked us in was a wealth of information regarding the island and it's history. Her great grandfather had built a cottage there which is still in the family. The museum's art exhibit focused on painters who had spent atleast one year living o the island. COVID measures were taken seriously; timed visits were kept to the schedule.

Its a view of the island worth seeing, overlooking the whole town. But, it's the collection of art and island antiquities that iscthe real draw.

The Monhegan Island Light Station was constructed in 1822. The lighthouse, built of solid granite, probably quarried on the island, rises atop Lookout Hill, and is about a fifteen minute uphill walk from the dock. The view is spectacular from the lighthouse area.

The museum occupies the former light keeper's house. The light was automated in 1960, and the house was subsequently sold to the Monhegan Associates and became the museum. The museum itself is charming with memorabilia dating back to the Native Americans who occupied the island. It covers the fishing industry here as well as the artists who have come here since the mid-nineteenth century.

I love this house, which is an object of interest in itself. I could almost hear echoes of its former inhabitants in the small bedrooms, the kitchen, dining, and the sitting room.

This is one of the major destinations on the island. There is a small gift shop in an adjacent outbuilding. I recommend a visit here. Enjoy!

The Monhegan Museum is one of the main sights on the island. A 10-15 minute walk from the dock, some golf cart transportation can be found. There are artifacts, photos, and paintings telling of the Island history. Very insightful.

Take a step back in time and see how life on a small island has endured for over 100 years! Don’t miss the art exhibit in the assistant lightkeeper’s house...always inspiring.
