Unfortunately it was mostly closed due to staffing issues, but we were able to walk around the grounds and there was plenty of signage explaining what we were seeing--pretty views as well.

After visiting Pemaquid Lighthouse we stopped to tour the Pemaquid Historic site & Fort. On a July weekday we were the only ones there. There is alot of history here & it was neat walking around learning about this area. A climb to the top of tower has pretty views of the Bay below. Only a few miles from Pemaquid Lighthouse it is definitely worth stopping.

Only the grounds are open because of the pandemic, but my kids had fun walking on the low walls. It was worth a quick stop.

The buildings are closed this year (tower, Fort House & Museum) because of COVID-19, but there is new and improved signage on the grounds and outdoor colonial demonstrations on site - and the grounds are beautiful and lovely for a nice walk. The head park ranger is the most knowledgeable person about this historic site, having written his dissertation in historical archaelogy about it. There are plans for future programs and improvements to this important Maine park which are well worth supporting.

The park manager was extremely disrespectful when he caught me off guard and stuck his head in my vehicle window, disregarding social distancing. Mind you I am immune compromised. I was there to hang a flyer for my business my son and I started, I explained all of this to him and he failed to simply respect me and tell me his name. This is public property and I was hanging a flyer on a public bulletin board. He threatened to take the sign down, which he said he would do after I left, accused me of drinking and driving told me to leave the PUBLIC PROPERTY, and then refused to tell me his name, just that he was the park manager. Absurd!

This 24-acre (9.7ha) historic site was about 3.9 miles (6.3 km) from Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and 0.5 miles (0.8 km) from Pemaquid Beach Park. Helpful directional signs led us to ample parking in dirt lots. Since it was the off-season, and a rainy day, we had this place all to ourselves. At the site (first settled 1610, abandoned 1696, resettled 1729), we found 17th and 18th century structures and archeological remains. A few interpretive signs were present. Picnic tables were available. The gift shop in the Fort House (built 1790) was closed. The museum also was closed. The trees on the site’s periphery were bare of leaves, but the views of Johns Bay and the Pemaquid River were exceptional, despite the day’s storms. We enjoyed all that we saw here during our brief stay. We disliked nothing.

This site presents some challenges in terms of accessibility: for full enjoyment, you need to be able to walk over uneven terrain, climb stairs, and have good enough vision to avoid possible tripping hazards. This is also (inside the museum) not a 'bells & whistles' sort of exhibit but something quieter: dioramas, descriptions to read, and more of a self-study atmosphere. To me, this is great because I can focus and absorb without distraction: but be aware. Why I love this site is, it's the real deal. You can see ancient cellar bottoms that have been excavated, walk into a cabin built as it would have been, see the fort location where conflict occured, and learn about the frontier days of mid-coast Maine. Pirates, Indians, soldiers, sailors, taverns, trade, life, death (see the ancient cemetery): it all happened here, in a place still authentic enough that with a little imagination, you can almost time-travel.

The history of this place is fascinating. The round stone fort constructed in 1901, the archaeological artifacts, the foundation remnants of the earlier fort and settlement, a museum -- all on a gorgeous promontory overlooking the ocean and harbor. The cemetery with 18th and 19th century graves includes several stones made by the well-known Maine 18th-century stonecutter Joseph Sikes and is also fascinating.

We didn’t have the patience to wait in the slow-moving line for the Lighthouse, but the museum and the man there elaborating on anything you asked them about was great! And we finally experienced the crashing waves reminiscent of what my husband saw in his childhood

The archaeological stuff was ineresting, and the site manager who is responsible for it was a pleasure to talk to. The fort is reconstructed but makes for a good viewpoint and the display inside is quite fascinating. A worthwhile visit.

In several years past I parked my RV overnight overlooking the harbor. There were no posted restrictions then. Is it still ok to do that? I always enjoyed the adjoining restaurant.

Sorry but I can’t really answer this. I don’t remember any restrictive notices...but then I was not looking!
There is plenty of space as you know.

I don’t know the answer to that question. I didn’t see signs about park hours. Sorry I couldn’t be of help.
Is there a beach here where there is swimming?

There's a public sandy beach 1/4 mile away on the same road admission is $4 per person. Snack bar and toy rental on site.
