While there are a ton of Portland Bay touring options, this was the most unique. We took Mail Boat Ferry, which tours around Portland Bay while also dropping off and picking up passengers on the surrounding Islands. It also is the way the mail gets delivered to the islands. The whole ride takes a little less than 3 hours. You buy the tickets the day you want to ride it. It is a commuter ferry, so potentially it could fill up, but we had no issues. It was interesting to watch the mail and deliveries get loaded onto the boat. Initially we sat up front on the Bow. The view is best from there. The Captain narrated as we were passing sights and nearing docks. We learned about some of the islands and the surrounding area. You do pass some lighthouse, but not all, so if that's your priority, there are better choices. Halfway through our ride, it did start to rain. The back of the boat is covered but open, and we stayed dry there while still having a nice view. There is also seating inside, but you can't see nearly as well. About 1/2 through the journey we docked at one island and stayed there for 1/2 hour. You can get off the boat and walk around if you want. There's a small store. Since it was raining we didn't get off, and would have been fine if the boat left sooner. Oh well. I thoroughly enjoyed this ride and recommend it.

Good service, helpful staff. Lots of options to go to various islands. Or just ride around all of them and view the bay. Beautiful area!

The mailboat trip (I took the noon ferry, 3 hours) was a wonderful thing to do! Sunny clear day, flat calm water, beautiful views, interesting stops where you watch the crew unload things. It was 70 degrees but felt cooler out on the water. I was glad I brought a fleece. Inexpensive and enjoyable.

I was in town for a business trip and took the Casco Bay Island Ferry to dinner. It was a fun ride with beautiful views. If you are in the area and have a chance, go for a ride!

The Mailboat Run (3ish hours) was a blast and a great way to have fun on the water and see all of the islands! We delivered amazon packages, supplies, and a few toilets! LOL. The cost is next to nothing and we had a great time!

You can't go to Portland, Maine and not experience some time out on the water. The Casco Bay Ferry terminal on Commercial street is the spot you want. Right in the heart of the action, just a few blocks from many of the best hotels in the Old Port area and offering lots of rides to the places you want to see. We took the ferry out to Peaks Island one day and took the three hour ferry "Mail Run' another. Both were great trips though we liked the mail run the best because you are out on the water for several hours and you get to see lots of islands and wildlife. We spotted lots of birds and even a dolphin on our ride. Take the earliest ferry at 8am for a less crowded experience. We had the whole front top deck to ourselves for the first two hours. Don't forget to bring some drinks and something to eat because there's no getting off once the ferry leaves the dock. There's a small but clean restroom on the main deck.

Despite an unseasonably cool spring afternoon, Mom and her 20 something daughters thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon on the water. Our guide Anna shared numerous details about the wartime and settlement history around the bay and many of its islands. The 1:45 hours spent on the cruise was well worth it. For folks preferring a less windy experiece, there's plenty of seating inside.

While it's not a lot of fun to roll out of bed and be on a ferry by 5:00 a.m., it was a unique experience. There was one other family on the boat and the rest of the folks on the outward bound trip were lobstermen, so we had the ferry much to ourselves. The gradual change in the view from moonlight to sunrise was beautiful, and it was really interesting to see what was unloaded at each of the island stops.

What time is the mail boat? Do you need advance reservations?
Thanks
Skrevet 15. mai 2024
How far in advance do they allow you to start boarding?
Skrevet 28. januar 2020
Not more than 20 minutes or so. People were gathered outside for quite some time before boarding because there was plenty to see while the crew loaded the boat. The time probably varies depending on what is being sent out to the islands.

We would like to take the sunset cruise. How do we purchase tickets? Is there any way to guarantee a spot on this ferry? Approximately what time does this ferry depart (we will be there 9/13/19).
Skrevet 9. juli 2019
Easy walk up and purchase at their booth as others have said. Go early in the morning or the day before, if you are able. Good luck!

We will be there in August and will already be doing the Lucky Catch Cruise, which includes some sightseeing. Will be be missing anything if we can only pick one cruise (not this one)? Not sure if 3 hours on this mail run cruise will be too boring for us. Has anybody done both that would recommend one over the other?
Skrevet 6. mars 2019
I don't know the Lucky Catch Cruise, but the Mailbot Run is a great one! We did this as a family once during the day for my daughter's birthday! We brought a picnic and ate on the boat. If it's a hot day, it's nice to sit on the deck and feel cool and see the great sites! The Diamond Pass Run would be another great option. You still see some great nooks and crannies of Casco Bay, but it's about one hour shorter.

A ferry trip this time of year isn't worth doing. It's usually quit cold on the open water in Casco Bay. The winter ferry schedule is minimal, with few options for excursions. There is little snow now, and commonly less snow on the islands than onshore. There are minimal services on the islands; and those few that do exist have skeletal schedules. A visit to nearby lighthouses in Cape Elizabeth and South Portland or time spent kicking around in the Old Port would be a better choice for most of us.

Yes, there are restrooms on board. It was a wonderful way to see A LOT without spending A LOT! The captain gives you great information on the various islands you cruise past.
Hope this helps!

Our cruise will stop in Portland from 8AM to 5PM, is that enough time to catch this Mail Boat?
Does anyone know if we can walk from the cruise port?
Skrevet 22. august 2018
Yes..you can catch the 10 am departure. I don't know where the cruise ship tender will drop you off but it can't be too far. No food on the boat...just a couple of vending machines.
Skrevet 23. august 2018
Hi, I am interested to visit one of the islands. We will arrive around 8-9pm at Portland and will leave to Nova Scotia st 2.30pm wondering we we have time for one island tour. What should we see? I was hoping you are a local! Thanks.
Skrevet 13. august 2018
Yes, You can visit Peaks Island. It is a 20 minute ferry ride and you can take a tour which is 75 minutes or rent a bike or rent a golf cart or you can simply walk. the walk around the island which is mostly on the water fronted streets is 4 miles.
