The staff members were kind to our dog and the train is pet friendly. It was a comfy, relaxing ride. We didn’t see anything outrageous but it was a nice activity to do with our dog.

We had a great day out in Portland and the train ride along the coast was the icing on the cake, with spectacular views along this historic rail rout which is only 1.5 miles long but with a good commentary along the way and a 10 minute stop at the halfway point was really good.

The train ride was an average ride, north along the coast for a short trip and then back again. (The engine pushes the train backward for the first half of the trip.)
My complaint is that the website for the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company fraudulently sold us tickets in the first class car when there is NO first class car on this train! We walked up and down the train looking for the first class car and were finally told by the engineer that they didn't have a first class car anymore. He also told us to request a refund for the amount we spent extra for first class. When I attempted to receive a refund, I was informed that the contract states "no refunds after the date of tickets for any reason". This spells FRAUD in my mind.
Also, if you are interested, there is NO museum at the "Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and MUSEUM".

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it was hard to hear the history being told. Not really a fault of the company but more because of passengers talking. The train ride was very pretty along the coast and the staff was wonderful

The train was very creaky. It was difficult to hear the recording of facts about the area, although that felt like a dry reading of the Wikipedia page on Casco Bay. Instead of paying the $17/person fee, just walk along the coast. It takes the same route as the train, it’s free, and you’ll be able to hear your companions.

We loved the train ride and the history that was shared with us. The staff and conductors were great in answering questions.
Our seats were great. At times we couldn't hear due to inconsiderate visitors talking on cell phones instead of listening to the tour but the tour was great.
We enjoyed the opportunity to get off the train at the swing bridge for photos. This was a very enjoyable tour. Good for all ages.

This was a cute short rail ride along the waterfront. Tour guide spoke about the history of the rails and sites seen from the train. Interesting facts. Wish the ride was longer but obviously the tracks were short. Nice breeze while on the ride with nice scenery.

I visited this site and found it had changed in the last 10+ years. I enjoyed the, reasonably priced, over one-hour ride along the coast of the bay. The narrator described what sites were observable during the ride and explained the origin of the two-foot narrow railroads in Maine and their equipment. The train was pulled by a two-foot gauge diesel engine. They do run steam engines at select times. They do not have an on-site repair and storage area anymore, so very little of their equipment, other than what is being used is present on the property. The ticket office and museum contain important information about the history of the two-foot railroads in Maine. They generally operate daily but call or check their website for the schedule.

We enjoyed the short relaxing ride around Casco Bay. It is located outside the welcome center. We had a great view of the harbor including the fort and the beach.

Is the Narrow gauge opened in January?

I’m not too sure. Their website doesn’t have listing for their hours for the whole year.
I would call the office to inquire about their hours in January.

In July would the outdoor train be too hot? Also if you have gone recently, and sat outdoors was the speaker working?

About forty minutes round trip.
Hi, I was wondering if the ice cream served on the Friday night Ice Cream Train is nut-free or not? Thanks in advance.
Hi, This will be our first time in Portland. Would you recommend the train ride for couples without kids? I was hoping to do a wine/beer tasting on board, but those events aren't offered during our trip dates. I don't mean to offend anyone, but we do not want a hokey kid-centric experience. We'd like to see and learn about the bay, but in a more adult atmosphere. If the train isn't it, than that's fine, we'd rather know ahead of time. Thanks for your honesty, friends!

The narration we received was oriented towards adults who are interested in the history of Portland Harbor and the trains that once ran into it, along with the history of these narrow gauge trains. If you are interested in history, you should enjoy the ride.

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum is closed for the winter. It normally opens in mid-May. The museum has not yet published its 2015 schedule yet but that should be published by mid-March. You can find the schedule at their website.
It's a nice place to visit and take a short ride (a little over a mile each way) on the train. If you are interested in railroads/trolleys, I really suggest also visiting the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunk (about 25 miles south of Portland). They have more than 100 trolleys and offer lots of rides on different trolleys every day.
