It's great that the city has this trail, but it's nothing special. Borders roads and train tracks in parts. If you're spending a number of days in Portland it would be a nice way to get some exercise.

Pulled into the parking lot and was quite excited to find such a large and free parking area so we could get out and walk. Immediately felt a bit uncomfortable. Saw a few people sitting in their cars, some on benches, sleeping. Pulled up next to a car w three adults in it apparently passed out. As we walked past, one of the woman ‘woke up’, looking quite out of it. It was then I saw the bottle of syringes with her trying to get one out. Man in the front seat head hung down, otp ally out of it. Someone in the port a John yelling, either to someone else in there or to no one. Got back in our car and left. Portland has an obvious homeless population, but this felt downright unsafe, especially to leave our car. Don’t recommend for families.

This broad, 3.6-mile (5.8 km), urban trail makes a circuit around Portland’s Back Cove. It affords views of the city skyline, but isn’t all that scenic at most times of day. Most of it parallels historic, two-lane Baxter Boulevard. Interval markers indicate mileage. Shade trees line most of its section along the boulevard. The trail attracts runners, walkers, and bicyclists. Its surface ranges from compact earth to asphalt and concrete over and near Tukey’s Bridge, which carries I-295 and US 1. Grades are flat along the boulevard and moderate by the highway bridge. Both litter and graffiti are rare but evident in spots. Free parking is in lots at Preble Street Extension and in nearby Payson Park. I most like the views from the boulevard; I least like the inevitable traffic noise along the bridge section.

We read about this trail and expected a tranquil walk with a view of the sunset. Perhaps that is what one would find initially if driving or riding a bike. However, walking from the old port, we encountered heavy car traffic with areas where there was no sidewalk. When we arrived at the trail, we found that much of the trail abuts a major highway, and it was anything but peaceful. This would be a convenient path for running or riding a bike, but to characterize it as a nature trail is very misleading. It was probably a lovely path before the expressways were built. Sadly, those days are gone.

My wife and I visited Portland for our anniversary weekend. We stayed close to downtown and I was looking for a place to run an exercise. This is the perfect place to run and walk around.

We were looking for a spot to enjoy the outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Back Cove Trail in Portland was perfect. One of us uses a motorized wheelchair so this was a great place to go since the trail is wide and flat. There weren't very many people there since the day was a bit on the brisk side, and it was low tide while we were there, but it was still worth the trip. There's lots to learn about our ecosystem here, especially the importance of salt marshes and mudflats. Would love to go back at high tide someday, and would also like to explore the Baxter Trail nearby.

Back cove Trail bevindt zich aan de zuidelijke zijde van Portland. Met uitzicht op de binnenbaai van Portland met vele joggers onderweg. Niet zo ver van het centrum.

I rode this trail my first afternoon in Portland. It is 3.5 miles around and is mostly flat. Even the stretches which parallel busy streets are well separated from them. There is a stretch where the trail goes alongside Route 1, for example, but as you ride you are shielded from the highway by a railing, grass median, and then another railing and a fence. There is a brief stretch where there is just a concrete barrier. Throughout you are safe and it a stress free ride. There is also ample parking near the Hannaford supermarket.
The ride itself is quite nice. You can enjoy the views of the Back Cove, the trail is wide, and it wasn’t too crowded when I went. Walk, run, bike, do as many laps as you wish. This is a good trail.

Such a great place to jog or bike or walk. Lots of waterfowl to see and dogs too. I would stick to the north side, as the south side goes right beside the highway.

This wide, mostly flat, 3.6-mile (5.8 km) loop trail made a loop around the nearly circular 340-acre (137.6 h) tidal basin of Back Cove. It ran beside Baxter Boulevard and I-295. It had interval distance markers. Memorial linden trees lined some of it. Much of it had open views of Portland’s peculiar skyline. On the Boulevard were a few turnouts with limited free parking. Adjacent Payson Park had more free places to park. The trail was a magnet for walkers and runners of all kinds. The Boulevard beside the trail similarly attracted bicyclists of all kinds; it was closed to motor traffic on Sundays (May-September) – so be forewarned!

There is parking on Preble Street, or Payson Park and you can park along Baxter Blvd.
