Have driving by on I-70 multiple times and never stopped - finally took an hour to get off the highway and glad we did. Amazing that this was built in 1756 without power equipment. 22' high stone walls - a very impressive fort. Watched the video in the visitor center which was helpful to understand the history. Staff was very helpful. Hint - you can drive to the fort, it's not obvious when you enter the park. The C&O Canal and towpath are on the property and can be reached by car. Good stop for history lesson!

Fort Frederick is an easy 90 minute drive from Baltimore. We visited the fort because of its history dating back to the French and Indian War.

We were surprised to have reenactors on site when we visited in mid-September, and they definitely helped bring the history to life.

We parked at the Fort and made loop via that C & O path to Ernstville (you can exit towpath to the Western Maryland Railtrail). Came back on the WMR and walked on the road back to the park.

The fall colors were changing in Washington County, Maryland when we visited Fort Frederick. Even though many parts of the park were closed, we enjoyed a walk around the fort and down the road toward the C & O Canal.
Our Saturday visit saw only a small number of visitors and plenty of available parking spaces. We were a bit disappointed that the visitor's center, fort, and the museum were closed but the property is still worth a visit. Parking/admission costs $3.00 for Maryland residents but payment is on the honor system. You need to retrieve an envelope with a hang-tag to handle your payment. It gets dropped into a box near the parking area or at the visitors center.
We also hiked down toward the water and the canal. There is a nice trail along the water, wide enough to pass other walkers and bike riders.

Me and my son took a quick trip to visit this gem. None of the buildings were open and you could not get into the fort but you could see alot. This place is beautiful and alot of history. A big issue for me is that you have to pay for parking. But it wasn't much.

We drove 30 miles northwest from Antietam National Battlefield to visit this remote French & Indian Fort built in 1757. The restored 4 star 'Vauban design' contains 2 barracks once used for area settler refuge, a Revolutionary War Prison, and a Civil War occupation. Signage describes the remarkable post war ownership by a slave who bought his freedom
From the closed Visitor Center parking, a 1/4 mile walkway accessed the park cabins and the open fort. C&O Canal nearby.
Worthwhile visit in open countryside.

Was a quick stop but how neat was it to check out this fort. To walk on the grounds inside the fort was quite an experience. I certainly enjoyed visiting this site.

Ranger Jeremiah Corbin - DNR provided an outstanding hike of The Plantation Trail that centered on all the trees that were either planted or came to be a part of this vast landscape. He gave information on how to tell what types the trees were but also about the many experiments with trees were part of the planting process. Over 50 people were part of the hike but he gave time to everyone for questions and pace. The hike went over time but none of us were wanting it to end despite the brisk winter morning. After hike refreshments of Hot Chocolate, warm cider and cookies were waiting upon our return to the Visitors center. I was highly impressed with the hike and planning that Ranger Jeremiah did. Great for Maryland to be proud of this State Park!.

Wow, What a wonderful park!!!!!
We first arrived at the visitor center. We paid for the entrance and enjoyed the exhibit. We then decided to drive to the fort. You can also walk.
Plenty of parking, a gift shop with a/c and bathrooms on site. The fort is well maintained. The staff and volunteers are GREAT!!!! They are eager to talk to you, they want you to ask questions and interact with them. There were several activities going on and at all times you could talk to staff dressed in period costumes.
They also had somebody talking about WWII.
I thought we were going to be there maximum 1 hour but it turned into close to 3 hours, and we left because we were hungry but we could still stay there because there were more reenactors.
Now I must visit Fort Ligonier and Fort Necessity.
I will definitely return. You must visit.

Pristine. Loved seeing the big pool, walking down to the Potomac River and the fort. Pretty meadows. Good for walking and learning about The fort including it’s history as a farm.
