We spent two half days at this park-museum is in visitor center, recreated fort has a walking tour, and a hike along the pond/tow path. Spacious and serene. Tent camping is available. Fees based on state of residence; veterans and seniors can get a lifetime pass. There is a gift shop and lots of picnic tables-get out in nature!!

This fort dates back to the French and Indian War, so to have it almost intact is amazing. Free parking and admission. Period-dressed docents are on site at the fort with various activities throughout the day.

Fort Frederick State Park is a hidden gem a few short hours from DC, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh. The facilities are well-maintained and the staff all helpful and welcoming. We planned a camping weekend that was limited to a single overnight over one of the hottest weekends in memory.
The campsite near the river is flat, with pad sites (crushed gravel) best suited for small campers and travel trailers. Tents will be better served using the sites on the north side of the camp road. There is no on-site water or electric, and only porta-potties are available in the camping area. While the site is close to the Potomac River, vegetation blocks any views.
There are several trails for hiking and Big Pool for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.
But the main attraction is the large stone fort built in 1756 to secure Maryland's western frontier during the Seven Years War (or French & Indian War or War of Conquest). Two of the three interior buildings were reconstructed in 1976, and there's a good amount of 18th Century material culture on display throughout. The dedicated staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and enthusiastic, and we certainly tested their enthusiasm in the 101 degree heat!
Even if you're not a "history buff," a visit to Fort Frederick may increase your interest in this fascinating period of history.
For campers, Hagerstown is 20+ minutes away for any supplies, etc. Otherwise, Hancock, MD is the closest town but with fairly limited options.

The fort is staffed by knowledgeable history buffs and we enjoyed the tour. We stayed overnight at the lovely associated campground in our camper van. We could walk right down to the Potomac. Loved it and will be back!

Stopped by here while I’m the area. Worth the short drive from Hagerstown area. Beautiful location, fort was in great shape, lots of peaceful trails to walk.

We stopped here on the basis of a dot on a map, we needed a rest from the road, so surprised, it was great. The fort and history was very informative, but didn't take long to see, lots of atmosphere, friendly costumed staff, also a great walk down to the C&O canal and great meadow habitat for our birding interests. I think this little place qualifies as a hidden gem.

Tony and I stopped by Fort Frederick State Park in Big Pool, MD. We got there at 4pm and the visitors center was already closing.
It cost $5 for our vehicle for park entrance fees. We couldn't watch the 10 minute video because they were closing due to no activity.
We drove over to the parking lot for the actual fort. The Fort was still open but unmanned so the interior buildings were locked.
The Fort was built in 1756 for the Indian wars against the white settlement. It was later used in Revolutionary war and Civil War. It's almost 300 yrs old
It's a stone fort with very thick high walls.
Definitely a nice park. There is a store but it was closed too. There is a campground down along the Potomac River.
Definitely recommend you visit when in the area. I would go back again! A great price!!!

Have driving by on I-70 multiple times and never stopped - finally took an hour to get off the highway and glad we did. Amazing that this was built in 1756 without power equipment. 22' high stone walls - a very impressive fort. Watched the video in the visitor center which was helpful to understand the history. Staff was very helpful. Hint - you can drive to the fort, it's not obvious when you enter the park. The C&O Canal and towpath are on the property and can be reached by car. Good stop for history lesson!

Fort Frederick is an easy 90 minute drive from Baltimore. We visited the fort because of its history dating back to the French and Indian War.
We were surprised to have reenactors on site when we visited in mid-September, and they definitely helped bring the history to life.

There is a river but when we visited it was fast flowing. Not sure it would be really safe.
