Rented two kayaks with a friend on a Thursday morning. Nobody was on the river. Very quiet, calm, pretty and restful paddle down the Anacostia to the Aquatic Gardens lagoon. We thought the kayaks were expensive but did it anyway. We have our own and could have put in for free, but decided to forego the hassle of loading our boats on the cars and just rented. Not cheap for a large group unless they have group rates, which they might. It's an interesting paddle, but nothing stunning. Still, it's nice to be able to be in the middle of the city and feel like you are way out in the middle of nowhere. Did not go past the Aquatic Gardens, but do know that you can see more urban sights the further down the river you go, including stopping off at a dock at the Arboretum where they have picnic tables. Nice touch.

One of the dirtiest Rivers I have ever been in kayaking, there's broken glass bottles on the boat launch ramp and trash everywhere, absolutely disgusting I will never go back

The waterfront park is located right on the outskirts of DC and affords a unique view of the Anacostia waters. Also it offers a bike trail that leads all the way to College Park. It has boat rentals and a picnic area with a shelter for inclement weather. You will be surprise of how accessible it is for enjoying the outdoors near a waterfront.

I visited Bladensburg Waterfront Park when I had some spare time on a business trip to Riverdale, Maryland. I took the opportunity to kayak on the Anacostia River and rented a kayak at the park. While at the park, I read one of the plaques and found out that the park was site of a War of 1812 battle,
where the Americans made an unsuccessful last ditch attempt to stop the British from marching on Washington, DC.
The park provides the following: canoe, kayak, bike, and trike rentals; paddle boat, rowboat, and fishing rod rentals; interpretive river boat tours; battle of Bladensburg visitors center; riverside walking path; picnic pavilion; hiking/biking trails; fishing pier; boat ramp; playground; and B&O railroad caboose.
While paddling, I observed the following birds on the river, a great blue Heron, Loon, Egret, Eagle and Hawk.

We enjoyed the boat ride. The river boat guide pointed out the various birds, fish and turtles along with the historical use of the river during the war. The boat ride was $2.00 per person. There was a slight delay in the boat leaving due to their rule of needing at least 10 people for the tour to start.

This is a great park, with access to trails up and down the Anacostial River, PLUS kayaks and canoes. There are some nice historical exhibits (all outdoors) here, offering insight into Bladensburg's history as an actual port of some significance before it got silted up.
Also available are docks where you can launch your own watercraft (kayaks, canoes, waterboards, etc). Plus a ramp where you could launch a trailered boat. You can't go much upstream from here, but downstream will take you past some nice creeks, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, the National Arboretum, and all the way to the Potomac. Plus, you can rent kayaks and canoes here if you don't have your own.
There's now a trail for bikes/walking that goes past Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, across Kingman Island, right into DC. In the other direction, the (paved) trail connects with multiple bike trails in Mt Rainier, College Park, and beyond.
I've always found parking here, but the park is getting more popular so things might change.

We also wanted to do the boat ride, but it wasn't going that day. the museum is very small, but does have a short film. We sat in the pictured train car and watched a really long freight train go by.

Bladensburg Waterfront Park has great river views, sheltered picnic areas, a nice playground, but the highlight of the park, in my opinion, is the pontoon boat guided tour down the Anacostia River to the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and National Arboretum. It's a 45 minute boat ride with historic and natural history narration and the opportunity to observe cormorants, ducks, geese, egrets, kingfisher, great blue heron, turtles, osprey and a bald eagle, if you're lucky. The park also rents kayaks and canoes so you can take your own tour. There's a boat ramp if you have your own boat that you want to launch and space to store your kayak, if you want to keep it there. There's a great bike path along the river that's flat and mostly shady with bike and helmet rentals. And everything is either free or very reasonably priced. It's just a little hidden treasure right outside of DC.

You can even horseback ride here, picnic and so on. They are developing trails along the river enabling bikers/hikers to make their way clear down to DC's Anacostia River areas. There are pedalo boats available too. Plenty of open space for picnics and relaxing. There are a few monuments located near the park's entrance honoring war heros from different wars past.

The pontoon boat ride was free and accessible, as is the whole park, when last we rode on the tidal Anacostia River. I recommend telephoning the park prior to visiting, as water levels affect the timing of boat rides.
