From Native peoples in the region centuries ago through the arrival of Europeans up to current maritime endeavors and equipment, this museum covers it all. Recent efforts to make it less Euro-centric have resulted in displays on enslaved persons in the area. The lower level has some information about water-living fauna; it would be very nice to see this expanded. Another area on the lower houses some historic watercraft, some of which are being restored on site.

Since Havre de Grace is at the beginning of the Chesapeake Bay, it is only fitting that a Maritime Museum is located here. The staff member at the entrance provided valuable guidance and information. Exhibits take us from the archeological examinations of the Susquehannock tribes who inhabited the area, to incursions of the early Europeans, through the Civil War and the Underground Railroad. The displays include both artifacts as well as well researched narrative panels that are easy to read. Among displays on life and earning a living along the Bay, I was particularly struck by a display on the ice harvesting industry, which we may never see again due to global warming. It was fun to visit the turtle tank on the lower level as well as the art gallery, and boat workshop. The areas are spacious and easy to navigate with plenty of natural light. The visit was real value for the small entrance fee that along with donations maintains the museum.

The Maritime Museum is a nice small museum dedicated to mariti me life of Chesapeake regional areas. It is located across the street from the Lighhouse and a few minute walk to the Decoy Museum. A small fee to get in. The museum does not offer much in terms of exhibits. It has an interesting video to introduce to the history and life of the people in cluding native of the the areas. If you have spare time, it is worth stopping in but if you are time pressed, you won't miss much from this Museum.

Park in the Marina parking lot and take follow the lane at the end to the boardwalk over the water. Many of the museums and the lighthouse are just off the promenade. The views from the board walk are really very nice, the river is very wide there and lots of birds and ships going by. We saw a large blue heron sitting there on a tree in the water. This boardwalk promenade takes you to the Decoy Museum and the Maritime Museum and at the end of the promenade is the light house and the keeper house. It’s not very long but it’s nice for a stroll for a half hour and it’s partially over the water. This area is separate from main street so after your done here you can drive a few blocks to main street and dine and shop a little bit. There’s some nice shops on and near main street.

I was quite impressed by this place. Stopped by and spent a half hour or so. Stayed a few minutes after closing but could have easily spent an hour.

Broad appeal to boaters (natch!), duck hunters, fishermen and history buffs. Even young kids should find this interesting.

The impressively restored local watercraft provide a great perspective on the history and culture of the Chesapeake. Definitely worth a stop if you find yourself in this part of the Chesapeake.

Cost: $3 (worth it)

Allow time: 30 min - 1 hour

Staff: I was surprised that the woman at the front desk was not aware of the Gold Star Memorial just across the street (unrelated to the museum but still you would think you would be aware of something of historical significance when you are working in a museum across the street regarding local history and interacting with tourists.) When I asked about an item in a display case the answer was reading the sign that the "display was coming". There were no printed narrative for the items yet. I could read that sign myself. A better answer would be that she just didn't know anything about that item (and hopefully find out for future reference)

Restrooms: On site and across the street.

Layout/ease of navigation: Very good

Displays - Very well presented and labeled (minus the new display labeled coming, items there but no detail information as yet). A nice variety of items (make sure you look UP) as displays hang from the ceiling.

Lower level - a small environmental education room. A few displays including 2 large fish tanks which looked as if they needed attention. If staff are reading this, please take a look regarding cleaning the tanks.

Gift shop on site.

I think this is a nice size museum to take school age kids for fun (sneaking in education) because I think their attention span would last through the visit. There is also a video that plays in the back room that will help mix it up for them.

Nearby: Across the street is the light house and the new Gold Star Memorial. A short walk down the Promenade is the Decoy Museum.

We visit for classes put on by the Coast Guard, and by the Upper Bay Wildlife folks. The museum opens it's doors to those seeking to educate and enrich the lives of it's attendees and neighbors.

They also have concerts with local artists playing folk songs and songs of seafaring and making a hardscratch life on the water.

But the cool part is the displays and artifacts that they have gathered and displayed. I grew up around here on the water. So a lot of maritime, nautical and Chesapeake Bay stuff was just common things of the area to me.

Until I saw them on display, learned the true history and stories behind the gems, and the people. It truly gave me a sense of belonging.

If you feel drawn to, or have any history with the Chesapeake Bay or any of it's tributaries, you owe it to yourself to visit the museum.

Very much enjoyed my visit, spent about an hour and a half here, and could easily have gone longer if my schedule permitted. This is surprisingly extensive for a small town museum, with much local history and lore, well presented and put in context of broader regional historic affairs. Captures the essence of how the town came to be and are over time, and significant local industry as well. Well worth your visit, I will definitely return.

$3 to enter self-guided maritime museum on the Havre de Grace Promenade. Lots of Havre de Grace maritime history including model ships and artifacts. History of the Conowingo Dam is very interesting as we have driven past it numerous times. There is also an area dedicated to John Smith's exploration of the Chesapeake Bay.
