The trail is a bit long for young kids (5 and under), but well worth it. Bring sand toys! The hike is awesome and the beach is really fun! Great family day trip.

The beach by the cliffs was off limits due to the landslides that were occurring, but the walk to the beach and back was amazing. It was 1.8 miles and enjoyed it a lot.

Lovely trails, well signed, beautiful place. We'd go back, but would be sure to do so at low tide next time.

I had not been here since I was a kid. But I enjoyed the hike and the searching for shark’s teeth on the beach. Enjoyed this state park and we could bring our dog! All together 4 miles from parking lot to beach and back—so plan accordingly! But fun hike!

While this is a nice place I must admit that based on previous reviews I was expecting much more. I drove two hours just to see for myself. If you are in the area or live local, yes, it is a nice place. Otherwise it is not worth a long drive. The hike is very simple no matter what trail. Red trail is very easy but does have several wet spots. Lots of people choose this trail. I enjoyed the orange trail. It is quiet and allowed for a "circle trip" Do not let the word Beach fool ya. There is very little of that. 25 people there and it maxes out the area. At one point I think you could walk the cliff line along the water but no longer. I did enjoy the day with my dog but in my opinion its not worth all the hype.

Calvert Cliffs is a unique park and is located less than one hour from the Capitol Beltway. The roads are excellent and ample parking is available. There is a fine playground for restless children - but the main event is the long beach that is covered with shells and small fossils. Look for shark teeth and unique shells: visitors are welcome to take a collection home!
But...pace yourself! The beach is about 2 miles away from the parking lot. The dirt trail to the beech passes through a swamp area filled with plants, beavers, turtles and frogs. Although the trail is scenic, it seems to take forever to navigate the two miles.

Returned after a few years away. The parking gets full and there is limited beach area now so plan accordingly. The hike is a fairly easy 2 miles each way (trail is 1.8 miles but it doesn't start at the parking lot). The access road can be used for an easier hike of about the same length. The beach is blocked at both ends now so you can't get to the cliffs like before. Still, we saw folks finding sharks teeth.

Have been wanting to go to this park for a while now but was worried about crowding in the summer as well as warnings about the abundance of ticks. Now that it's fall finally decided to give it a try. On a late weekday afternoon, turned out the place was pretty deserted - we probably encountered about 20 people total (less than half masked or carrying one), including on the trails and the beach - during our two hours there - even though it was a cool and sunny day. So either it's emptier now because summer's over, or weekdays tend not be as busy. And also happy to report that it wasn't too buggy - I might have brushed off one tick from my shirt but otherwise no problems (of course we did spray profusely).
It's a very nice little park with a few well marked and shaded trails from the parking lot to the beach - the red is the shortest - 1.8 miles one way - as well as the easiest, being flat and relatively wide, so not surprisingly the busiest. The beach is quite small and covered with broken shells and pebbles. The side towards the cliffs is closed and although a few people still crossed over there's not much of a beach to walk on with most of it under water. We took the red to the beach and returned via the orange and the white, connecting to the red again for the final bit. Both orange and white trails are narrower and not quite as flat (although nothing here has much elevation) - orange is also at least half mile longer if taking it all the way - so they offer just a bit more workout, plus we didn't encounter anyone else on them. However they were not as scenic - the red trail goes alongside the largest expanse of water lilies (not flowering right now however) whereas the orange/white just go through the woods.

Calvert cliffs state park is home to many beautiful hiking trails (the red one is most popular/crowded, but the others are wonderful as well!) Sadly much of the beach is closed due to erosion of the cliffs. It definitely is still a fun place to visit, but because there is so little beach, you should not go with the expectation of finding any shark teeth (for a more "guaranteed" place to find shark teeth, check out my review of purse state park!)

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Solomons - it’s less than 10 minutes from there to the cliffs. Anyplace in Solomon’s Island will be close.

I have heard really good things about this place so I really want to come. Can anyone tell me about how you get to the beach and how far it is from the parking lot to the beach?.

It's about 1.5 miles to the beach. The walk, however, is very scenic. I saw others pushing strollers down the trail we used. There are also stop and rest areas.

We are considering this as a summer sometime during the second and third week of August but are concerned about the jellyfish and the stinging flies. Should we wait and go during a different time of year or the kids and dog remain happy in August? Thank you.

This year (2016) the jellyfish are in and the stinging flies are bad. We generally see the jellies come closer to shore after July 4th. The earlier it gets hot, the earlier they come close.
Is there handicap accessible paths, etc..?
Linda S

Hello,
I am. Not aware of any handicap accessible paths at Valvert Cliffs State Park. You could check their website to be certain. An alternative might be Flag Ponds Park which is just a few miles north on Rt 4. It would have the same views but is more accessible. I hope this helps.

Are there wooded, spacious tent camp sites and are pets allowed?

Same as the previous answers. Not a camping park. Day use only and pets are welcome.

exactly how far is the hike from parking to beach? I have a service dog to walk me, but distance is limited. also, is there a visitor center?
Chris, the beach is 1.8 miles from the parking lot with a return hike of another 1.8 miles. The hike especially in the summer heat and humidity is quite arduous for some. Insects can be a problem. There is not a visitor's center.
