We spent a day at historic St. Mary. I’d planned on a couple hours, but I was not giving this site enough credit before we got there. The welcome center had a quaint museum, but the grounds were jam packed. Every site has people in time appropriate costume just waiting to share history and answer questions. The farm even has some very personable cows and pigs! It’s easy to see why this area was settled, and why it succeeded where some other early settlements suffered. I’ll be going back with my kids soon.

I took my daughters here as I know they won't be doing this as a field trip at their school and I had gone on a field trip when I was in elementary school. I did my research on their website, which I strongly recommend. (For example, we already knew the St. John's Site Museum was closed due to electrical issues, so we weren't upset to learn that when we arrived.) It was a great way to learn about Colonial Maryland. Here are the highlights:

Be prepared to walk a LOT. Everything is spread out, as much of it is set up on the actual locations of buildings from 400 years ago and the town had people spread out.

It's a work in progress. Most of the houses/buildings are just frames. However, there are many complete buildings including a church, inn, and state house. There is also a Woodland Indian Hamlet and a reproduction of a sailboat you can tour.

The staff are knowledgeable and it wasn't crowded when we went so we got a lot of one-on-one attention and questions answered. Everyone was friendly and helpful.

Go to the Godiah Spray Tobacco Plantation! Apparently most people don't go to this particular part of the site because it's set away from everything else. However, you can walk there if you're not exhausted yet or you can drive your car there as they have their own parking area.

There is ONE restaurant at Historic St. Mary's City. It has very limited hours and a very limited menu. It is also quite popular with the college students at St. Mary's College, so go before class lets out if you're there on a weekday during the school year. The food was delicious, and I really enjoyed it. However, I had a hunch my kids wouldn't eat what they had, so I packed PB&J for them and that was a good choice. Even the grilled cheese was too fancy for them. The menu is online. Check it out if you have picky eaters like me.

I was VERY disappointed by my visit to St. Mary's City. We arrived on a Sunday and EVERYTHING was closed. This should be advertised loud and clear on the website so that potential visitors - most of whom are accustomed to historic sites being open both Saturdays and Sundays - will not make a trip in vain, like we did. Compounding the disappointment, the ship normally docked there - the Dove - was out of port at special event. We had no way of knowing that.

Thank you for taking time to review our museum. We are sorry to hear you arrived on a Sunday. We have our hours posted on the website, Trip Advisor, Google, and social media but will look to see how we can push it further to the forefront. Maryland Dove is typically away the first weekend in October to St. Clements Island for the Blessing of the Fleet event. We will keep your comments in mind as we move into the spring season (we are now closed for the winter).

Historic buildings and artifacts are not what makes this place great. What makes this place great is the staff! They're friendly, engaging, knowledgeable, and passionate about history and Saint Mary city. Each one makes a point of engaging visitors to share their knowledge.

My husband and I went here on a Saturday afternoon. This is home of Maryland's first European settlement in the 1600s. This was Maryland's first capital until it was moved to Annapolis. This museum is mostly outside and it does a great job at persevering the history of the first settlement. St. Mary's City was forgotten about for a long time so all the buildings are reconstructions of what was once there. Some of the buildings include the Catholic church, state house and a sales shop. It also features a ship called the Maryland Dove which is a reconstruction of the ship that took the European settlers to Maryland. If you're into the history of Maryland, I'd definitely reccomend a trip here.

We love history and this site didn't disappoint. Our visit was on a weekday and we practically had it to ourselves. The buildings have been reconstructed accurately and all is well maintained and informative. The costumed interpreters are knowledgeable and friendly. There are ongoing archeological digs. We loved being able to tour the Maryland Dove! Highly recommended for lovers of American Colonial history.

Took advantage of extraordinary weather in November to visit historical town in nearby Maryland, first colonial capital. Ample free parking at visitor center & museum where one can start walking tour of recreated colonial city. Lots of informative signs and good recreated structures, as well as helpful friendly docents / volunteers. Recreated city center including State House, commercial areas, and sailing ship. Fair amount of easy walking (2-3 km), physically demonstrating separation of church (Chapel) and state (government house). Nearby colonial plantation has a few animals and lots of exhibits and artisans using colonial methods to maintain farm life and crops. Good outdoors experience for families and individuals interested in colonial history.

If you haven't been to HSMC, you should go. They have worked hard to research and put together pieces of the history of Maryland's original capital and are still digging to find more. All the staff were wonderful! There were interpreters at many buildings to explain about the building, location, life style of the colonial residents (immigrants and Indians) and answer any questions. They clearly loved what they were doing and it made our visit more enjoyable. They are not in costume right now due to COVID but the enthusiasm is still present. Being able to walk inside the buildings and boat and see techniques demonstrated was fun.

Waterfront access and plenty of space to walk around and soak in nature. Very historic site, but not overdone.
