Total Disappointment!! BEWARE!!!!
The campsites are unfit for camping!
We left after an hour Sites 26-36 have only ROCKS and ROOTS covering the ground. All the topsoil has been washed away and is just terrible for camping.
The ROCKS protrude 6-12 inches out of the ground at each of the sites. They cannot be avoided!!! Every other step and you are KICKING a ROCK or tripping on a ROCK or ROOT!
There is no flat ground to set up a tent and the trees are too far apart for hammock camping, which we had both. If you dare to try to set up a hammock you can't avoid setting up over back breaker ROCKS and they are everywhere!
These sites are a true DEATH TRAP at night!
We left after 1.0 hours only to be told by two different camp workers, "Oh that site is pretty bad and they will check me out early"
I drove 2.5 hours each way to waste my time.
Do yourself a favor and skip this state park. I will need Health Insurance for this place. NEVER AGAIN!!!!

We went back for a second time. This time we went in October and it was beautiful. We had site #11. It was a great site. Not too close to others, directly off the road (no backing up down a hill) and we had plenty of space. It is also right across from a bathhouse. I wanted to write another review for this location because the park has allowed it's dump station to be completely grown over. And because of COVID all the potable water spigots are closed. We filled our camper up ahead of time and it was fine. We used the restrooms and while they weren't as clean as our previous trip, they weren't bad. There was also a much smaller number of campers there too.

The blue heart Gilmore hike at Tolland State Forest is an easy hike for all to enjoy. Takes about 45 minutes so a quick hike to squeeze in between a morning and evening activity.

Spent the weekend here. The campground is very wooded and there are many sites right on the water. Reserved our site online and check in was simple and easy. Our site was 46 and it was large, private and flat. There weren't that many sites that were that large or flat, however. There is a small swim beach and you can put in your boats or kayaks at several points in the park. The bathrooms were pretty clean and had flush toilets. Each restroom had one shower. The showers were free and had hot water. Each site had a picnic table and a fire ring. There is NO PLACE to fill your trailer/rv with potable water. So be prepared to either fill up before you get there or tote and carry the water. There is a dump station, but there isn't any potable water there. The water spigots in the park are potable, but are not set up to hook a hose up to. There are several sites that are individually reservable, but they are so close to each other that you might be uncomfortable if you didn't know the people in those sites. They are much better as group sites. So just be aware that you could be really close and even share an entrance if you choose one of those sites.

We spent 8 days at this lovely campground while my daughter spent the week at nearby Berkshire Soccer Academy. The reservoir water was perfect temp for swimming in August, the campsites are large and spacious, the nature center host (Allison) was informative and had great ideas for learning and play. We didn't have any problems with the bears, just a pesky raccoon! (our fault though as we left out a box of cereal bars). There is a nearby healthy food/deli and also country store for basics. Everywhere you drive is lovely! We found a winery not too far off.
We did have an emergency situation come up that required an ambulance and the staff were amazing. They cleaned up our site for us and refunded monies we had paid due to our early departure. We even got a follow up call the next day for the head ranger Jim asking how we were doing. This level of care and service is just so rare these days that we want everyone to know it exists! Go for a weekend or a week or a month. You won't regret the quiet, the peace, the new friends made We are eager to return next season! If you need a review of nearby hospital in Great Barrington we can offer that too ;-). Better ER visit than home in Annapolis and that's saying something!

Everything there is nice. The beach , trails, lake, comfort stations etc. Only problem was the bear outside our tent sniffing at 4 am. Tried tuning flash lights on , radio on low. Didn’t know if we should make a lot of noise to scare it or be quiet and hope it went away. I would suggest they empty the dumpsters in the parking lot that are filled with garbage or lock them up. Also who’s idea was it to chain a clear trash barrel to a tree for recycling old soda cans? This can is 15 feet from our camp site. I’m not a expert on bears but I think they may be attracted to the sugar dripping out of the cans. We had no food in our tent. Person I was with hit the car lock and the beeping noise scared it away. I was told by someone who works there that the bears have been spotted going into these dumpsters. The park puts the recycle bins there. The bears will be back. Don’t know if I will. If I do I’ll bring the dog or bear spray.

We were able to reserve site #24 at the last minute. Between #23 and #24 is the host site. #24 has a lot of flat ground, big enough for an eight-person tent. (#25 only had enough flat ground for a two-person tent.. better for RV camping). There was an awesome view of the water, where we hung our hammocks. The bathroom/showers were within walking distance of this site & very well kept. Firewood is available for $5/bundle. Highly recommend this campground for some quiet time! There was a large party a few sites down and because of all the foliage during June, we didn’t even hear them. Every site has a fire pit & picnic table. No water or electricity available at the sites. Enjoy!!

This was our first trip to Tolland State Park and the kids were already asking to go back. We had a fantastic trip. We had site 71 which was on the Main Rd. The site was probably one of the largest sites we've ever stayed on. The site was clean. The bathrooms were very clean and the campground was quiet. We brought our kayaks, and although we did not have a water front site, we launched from the boat ramp. The lake was very busy on a warm Sunday, but we were in our kayaks for almost 4.5 hours. While we were out we paddled to the beach at the campground and we had the kids take a swim. On our way back, the kids found a rope swing and had their first experience jumping from a rope into a lake. Needless to say, they loved it.
At night, the campground was quiet.
We also rented a boat from Overflow Campground. It made us realize how large the lake was.
The only "complaints" I have are:
-Our site was quite a distance from a comfort station. If we had younger kids, trips to the bathroom would have been much more daunting . It was about a4-5 minute walk to the nearest bathroom.
-Thankfully we have a water tank in our pop up because the water was not working at the comfort stations or spigots throughout the camp the first 1.5 days we were there. The problem was resolved the last afternoon of our trip.
-because it is both a campground and a day use park, people who use it for day use seem to drive quite fast through the campground. Many times I saw cars traveling faster than the posted 10 mph.
Next time we visit we will definitely try to book a waterfront site.
The park staff was exceptionally helpful and accommodating. We actually extended our trip by a day. Being a MA state resident, the fee is exceptionally reasonable.

I love this park, and will definitely return. The lake was wonderful to paddle around in and glorious to swim in. I was very happy that my dog was welcome here, and campers were friendly and respectful of the quiet hours.
I was offended, however, by the ranger who checked us in. This person somehow thought it was appropriate to go on and on (referencing another group of campers), complaining about how "rude" Americans are, and how he couldn't wait to get back to Canada were people actually "knew" how to be polite! As a well-traveled native New Englander, I have never been spoken to with such blatant disrespect by anyone from ANY other country, including Canada. This was a very poor example of Canadian "courtesy"!

which are the best waterfront sites?
Skrevet 9. juli 2018
Site 9 is probably the best. Easy access to water if you're kayaking or whatever and the view is amazing.

Do you know what site you camp on that you were able to anchor a boat?
Skrevet 22. februar 2015
There are many sites like that, depending on the size of the boat.make your reservation early because the lakeside sites fill up early.if you have a large boat you might want to take a ride and take an in person look.I see you live near Boston,it would be an easy ride,I had o make my decision from chicago
