We parked in a side gravel lot that was in an area that didn’t look safe. We tried a little side door next to the lot, it was an odd looking for an entrance into the museum but, it had the name of the museum on it. Adding to the confusion & unsafe feeling it was locked, no warm welcoming smiles here.
We then saw a note saying to use another door on the Main Street. That must of been why it was locked. 😂
We saw nothing that helped us feel that this main entrance was correct, either no signs or anything. We entered the unlocked door anyway feeling unsure to a dark-ish hallway with bathrooms, & cute eye glass info on walls… then we saw a dark closed bar in the hallway? We see more eye history pictures on another wall & a gate to an empty room, then a pull down gate to a restaurant/bar where a guy was preparing for a dinner rush? He saw us… no words. We strolled on… saw glass display cabinets with Eye glasses.. ok I think we are on the right path now down another hallway.. we are going to find a person to welcome us or main museum entrance soon? We find another main door… locked with a note saying if locked use door near elevator… locked.
We gave up 😂 we were here at 11am Wednesday, the website said it was opened. It was so strange- 🤷♀️ I can’t be mad, it’s free. So oh well

A real trip! Amazing collection. I have never seen such an extensive collection. Cool stuff. The collection of Eskimo sunglasses alone is worth a visit.

Great History Great Women in STEM.
This museum is not just about the history of American Optical, it is the history of the town, the inventions of optical and safety, the role of women in patents. I was amazed at all the information and displays they had. It was definitely low tech, but all displays had great write ups and were laid out well. Also come cool history about the flood. and people coming together. It is a sight you want to see....

The Optic Heritage Museum in Southbridge is amazing! If you are in Southbridge, don't miss it. It has a lot of antiques from the American Optical Company that revolutionized the world, including vision care and eye protection gear. The company had some of the most amazing inventors of all time. The audio and video of the 1955 flood the put the AO buildings under 15 feet of water is incredible.

Fascinating visit! We called 90 minutes before arriving and the museum was opened just for us. We were taken on an informative tour through the huge collection of AO and Zeiss items on display.

This museum is well worth a visit. Even though it’s undergoing a renovation, the museum’s artifacts tell an incredible story of American ingenuity and productivity. Executive Director Dick Whitney, a retired American Optical employee, provided an excellent tour.

Not just optical heritage, but the history of a city and a region. Learned many fascinating tidbits about the history of glasses, lenses, etc. Call ahead during COVID times; the hours are limited and the tour guide needs to be there for you to get the whole story.

A very insightful look into the business that built industry which supported this community and surrounding towns. We enjoyed this walk through time via history of the American Optical Company.
This incredible collection put together by volunteers is a trip that every person visiting the area should see. It is also something schools should visit to learn more about the historic scientific breakthroughs these 19th and 20th pioneers contributed to society as a whole. It is a tour rich with Science History and culture intertwined. We were so impressed with the many artifacts on display.
It is layered with company history.
It was time well spent.

This is a small but interesting and effective stop. The artifacts cover a wide range of teh American Optical experience. The visit was led by a very knowledgeable guide and was very worthwile

Great little museum. Very knowledgeable staff. The history and stories are wonderful. Hard to find but worth the search.

Hi. There is no admission fee (donations accepted), but there are a few steps which may make it a bit challenging depending on your mobility. You can always call ahead and see if things have changed since we visited, or to see if they have any additional options like an elevator access to the display level. They were so very nice and accommodating when we were there so if there is a way to make it work, I'm sure they will!
