This historic botanical conservatory is a treat, no matter what time of year you visit. This was a late autumn visit, just ahead of a scheduled 18-month shutdown for renovation work. A sunny day outside made for the heat and humidity to be at their best for that tropical feel as we made our way through each four main sections of the conservatory buildings. Despite it being autumn, we still found many beautiful plants, some even flowering. Look up...look down...and enjoy the beautiful shades and shapes of the many green plants and palm trees. I have visited here many many times through the years and am never disappointed. In fact, usually in awe! Some of the specimens are a hundred years old! When the conservatory reopens in 2024, keep it mind for holiday displays. We used to come every Easter Sunday just to see the giant rabbits among the Easter lilies!! And the poinsettia trees at Christmas. Outside the conservatory are gardens, complete with a Marshall Fredericks sculpture, and the koi pond. Although admission is free, please consider a donation for this jewel on our beautiful Belle Isle park in the Detroit River.

Step inside and you are transported to a lush tropical location. Beautiful green leaves and flowers everywhere. Koi pond out front too. Then walk next door to the aquarium.

Enjoying the holiday weekend, we chose to venture locally. The conservatory is a timeless beautiful area. Located on Belle Isle, a short drive from downtown Detroit. A horticultural reminder that there's more to the Motor City than cars.

We only had time for a short visit to an attraction in Detroit, and decided on this conservatory. The parking was free and the greenhouse itself looked like it would be at home in the famous Kew Botanical Gardens in London. The lady who greeted us was very friendly. They have a couple of great environments and loads of amazing plants, many in bloom. Also, admission is by donation, which makes it budge friendly for those on a budget. So glad we stopped by!

Cool spot to wander when on the island. Lots of different species in a nice layout. Took our kids there for a day off and they enjoyed it just as much as we did. We'll definitely be back!

The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, more commonly known as thee Belle Isle Conservatory, is a greenhouse and botanical garden that covers 13 acres in the 982-acre Belle Isle Park, which is located on an island in the Detroit River between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario near the United States/Canada border. Opened in 1904, it is the oldest continually running conservatory in the United States and named for Anna Scripps Whitcomb, who left her collection of 600 orchids to Detroit in 1955. Thanks to her gift and subsequent donations, the Conservatory is now home to one of the largest municipally owned orchid collections in the country. It also features a lily pond on its north side and perennial gardens on its west side. The Conservatory building is divided into five sections--the Palm House, the Tropical House, the Cactus House, the Fernery and the Show House. The centerpiece of the building is the 85-feet-high central dome, which houses palm trees and other tropical plants. The perennial gardens are located outside to the north of the vestibule. The lily pond, constructed in 1936, is located between the Conservatory and the Belle Isle Aquarium. It is home to Japanese koi. Located to the east of the Conservatory building are 20 greenhouse structures, 15 of which are used to care for the orchid, bromeliad, cactus, amaryllis and tropical plant collections. The other five are used to train local high school students for post-graduation jobs in the horticultural field.

First time visiting this place although I have lived in the Detroit metropolitan area for many years. What a pleasant surprise!
Both the exterior gardens as well as the plants inside the Conservatory are amazingly well maintained.
We loved the tropical section: trees are incredible! Coming from a tropical country I must admit the region is well represented.
The plant signs contain mostly the phylum and the common name.
The Conservatory is free. But boy, they are well deserving of our donations.

This conservatory is a small space with many lovely flowers and plants. My favorite time to visit is winter when a step inside is a break from the cold. I have however visited in spring and summer and enjoyed all of the visits. The conservatory is small enough that kids don't get bored and large enough that adults can have a variety of plants to examine. It is a great place for relaxing and enjoying the beauty of nature.

We went with a large family group that included seniors and young children. We enjoyed the exhibits and the kids loved the scavenger hunt and the stamped souvenirs. What brilliant staff! Instead of buying things we didn’t need, each child could choose a stamp and a color and wear their souvenirs home on their arm. There weren’t many orchids visible, but such variety in each of the spaces. What a pleasant surprise that there is no entry fee once you pass the gate with your MI Recreation sticker or pay the $11 per car fee to get on Belle Isle. We will go again.
