Fun museum. Beautiful entrance as you walk inside that's taken from a ship. Sorry, can't remember from where. Lots of schoolkids on field trips learning a lot about the Great Lakes and doing hands on activities. I enjoyed the room that talked about PFAS in the lakes and the examples of it being in our laundry, water bottles and more. Very educational.

Drove from Southeastern Indiana to visit this museum (among other places) only to find a sign at the door saying it was closed for a private event. This was during normal business hours (we arrived two hours before they were supposed to close).
Unless something catastrophic happens, a place should be open during posted business hours.
Because we're from out of state we had to pay $12 for a recreation day pass to get onto Belle Island. The very least the museum could do would be to have a sign posted at the pay booth, advising people that the museum is closed.

Our first family trip to Belle Isle in a while. The Miniature Ships exhibit is fantastic and a great opportunity to see artifacts that aren’t often on display.

What a gem on Belle Isle. The park around the museum is a bit downtrodden but the museum and lakefront itself were just thoroughly enjoyable. Many cool exhibits and artifacts and so much history! Was so pleased to learn more about the history of the Edmund Fitzgerald and its relationship to Detroit and the Great Lakes. Received special attention from the museum manager, Steve, who happened to be walking around the building and grounds......what a knowledgeable man. Check this out!

Freshly re-opened, the Dossin Museum is steaming along, offering fascinating maritime exhibits and glimpses into Great Lakes shipping history.
The museum greets you with a stunning exhibit, the smoking lounge of the cruise ship, City of Detroit III, which features beautiful stained glass and woodwork. A delicately-detailed model of another luxurious cruise ship, the Greater Detroit, circa 1923, is displayed in the Model Room, next to the actual wall-sized painting that hung in the ship itself, which also appears in miniature in the model. The pilot house exhibit of the freighter, the William Clay Ford, allows you to view the city as the ship's captain would have, as the ship cruised the Detroit River. The bow anchor of the ill-fated ship, the Edmund Fitzgerald, rests near the water from which it came. Nearby are canons from the Battle of Lake Erie, fought in the War of 1812. (please see photos)
My tour guide, historian Steven, was a wealth of information. The Dossin Museum opens a window into the rich history of the Great Lakes and the ships that traversed them.

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum places special interest on Detroit's role on national and regional maritime history. Located at 100 Strand Drive in Belle Isle Park along the Detroit River, this 16,000-square-foot historical maritime museum features one of the world's largest collections of scale model ships and the massive bow anchor of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, the Great Lakes freighter that sank in a Lake Superior storm in 1975 with all hands aboard. The tragic story of the Edmund Fitzgerald has been documented many times and seeing the bow anchor is a very eerie experience. The Dossin opened in 1961, then reopened in 2007 after a 10-week, $100,000 renovation. Other exhibits include the Miss Pepsi, one of the fastest hydroplane racing boats of all time and the first boat to qualify for a race at a speed of over 100 miles per hour; the SS William Clay Ford pilot house, where visitors can play captain of one of the city's most noted freighters; and the restored smoking lounge of the SS City of Detroit III, which transports visitors back to the golden age of Great Lakes steamers. Before I leave, I have to go back to take another look at the Edmund Fitzgerald's bow anchor. I still remember when I read about its sinking in the newspaper. And I still can't get over the TV documentary of its last voyage. A visit to the Dossin brings back a lot of memories.

I recently visited the Dossin Museum and there are some pretty cool exhibits to be seen by all. I also noticed some construction going on outside around the museum and I just know that the added additions and attractions are going to be awesome.

Dossin Great Lakes Museum was the surprise of the attractions we visited on Belle Isle today! I wasn't expecting much from the museum (if I'm being honest, I might have stepped in mostly to use the restroom?), but it was surprisingly great! The museum had a lot of interesting information about the Great Lakes and Detroit River! It also had a section from a beautiful old boat put directly into the building! Very fun to explore. Such a surprise! Worth a visit if you're exploring Belle Isle!

To take a break from visiting my seriously ill brother I drove twenty miles to the Detroit Institute if Arts and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. The Dossin is on Belle Isle, Central Park in a River, and is one of many things to see and do in the Park. It was early summer and people from the Detroit Metro Area were all over. The cool air from the river was refreshing.
The museum looks small from the street but is so full of beautiful exhibits that it feels expansive.
Entering you pass cannons from the old British fort and a sleek hydroplane famous for its speed. The first room is one of the elaborate salon’s that Great Lakes cruise ships used to boast of.
Beyond are detailed models of ships from La Salle’s ship built on the shores of Lake Erie to the large lake boats that sail today.
There is large children’s interactive area. The kids there loved it.
The pilot house of Henry Ford’s favorite oar carrier from his fleet faces the Detroit River. One of the videos in the little theater shows how Detroiters were building ships long before they were building cars and continued to do so after the autos arrived.
From the pilot house and lawn you can watch ocean-going ships and the long ships called “lake boats” slide by with jet skis and motorboats shooting past.
