My wife and I are looking at visiting all the land based lighthouses in Michigan. This lighthouse is just one of a few memorial lighthouse in Michigan. It also is the only light house in the United States made of granite. Unfortunately vandalism has made it necessary to put a fence up around it. It is unique and easy to get to lighthouse.

Was curious to visit, having read that this is one of only a few marble lighthouses in the entire nation.
The architecture is unique, however visiting is underwhelming ... The lighthouse looks run down and not well cared for, much like many other parts of Detroit.
This would be a stunning location for some upgrades to the park to include well groomed paths and trails and a more comprehensive visitors area with historical information about the lighthouse.
Visit if you are a lighthouse buff, otherwise there may be better ways to spend your time on Belle Island.

Nice walk and view, the lighthouse is surrounded by a metal spike fence and the grass is extremely overgrown, I think it is a shame, still a nice walk and view.

Located on the far Northern tip of Belle Isle. Take a narrow winding pathway to find this. You are allowed to walk it's perimeter.

Totally unpaved trail from the parking area but it's worth it. It's gated and locked but it's still beautiful. It's confusing to find as it's on the main strip almost at the end of the circle, not by the Conservatory or on Inselruhe, as shown on maps. Also visit the Carillon Tower (pictured in last 2 photos).

William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse was erected in 1929 by the sculptor Gaza Moroti in the Art Deco style. Designed by famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn. Standing 80' in height, constructed with marble and bronze. Located on the northeast end of Belle Isle in the Detroit River. It is the only lighthouse in the nation constructed of marble and it is one of only two lights in Michigan erected as memorials. The eastern tip of Belle Isle had to be expanded to make room for this lighthouse.
William Livingstone of Detroit served as president of the Lake Carriers Association from 1909 until his death in July, 1925. Livingstone was a popular and prominent resident of Detroit. He is known for his promotion of many navigation improvements on the lakes, including the construction of the separate down-bound channel in the lower Detroit River, which is named after him. He was instrumental in persuading the Federal Government to construct the Davis and Sabin locks at Soo Ste. Marie, to deepen and straighten channels in the St. Mary’s River and across Lake St. Clair, and to build an independent waterway for downbound vessels in the lower Detroit River.
The area in which the William Livingstone Lighthouse is located. Is just as splendid as the lighthouse itself. This area consist of several miles of biking and walking paths. You can fish, swim, kayak, play with your dogs or just throw a blanket down, enjoy a nice picnic and watch the freighters go by!

It is a little hard to walk to but if you are into Detroit and like Belle Isle you have to see it. It is one of the Great Lakes lighthouses you have to have on your list.

You can only access the lighthouse by walking, possibly as much as a 1/4 mile, and there is no pavement leading to it. If you are disabled or have a hard time walking this probably isn't for you. It is along the path to "hipster beach, an area on one of the most eastern parts of the island where the young folks hang and swim...After visiting the island countless times, last night was my first encounter with this gem. I have a hard time imagining that you will find a more stylized and beautiful lighthouse anywhere. Designed by Kahn, and I presume Parducci, sometime I would guess between 1925-1935 this is art deco at its' finest. Complete with bronze eagles racing to the top of the structure. All I can say is that it is worth the walk, and while you are out there continue on the trail to hipster beach. You are sure to meet some nice people out there.

The lighthouse is located on the northeast corner of Belle Isle. We walked for about 10 minutes to get close to it. It is the only marble lighthouse in the US and has an art decco style. It is no longer being used as a lighthouse. After seeing the lighthouse we walked down by the Detroit River along the path. Nice views and a quiet area.
