Nice little museum. Had interactive displays for kids to play with and learn. Cute little gift shop too. Desk attendant was very nice.

I got to town late and first went to the historical museum but only looked at the gift shop. I was looking for a Frankenmuth book which they had. I didn't think there would be time to go through the museum part before they closed. In looking at the reviews now, maybe I did have time. Didn't realize it was so small. I did enjoy the gift shop and the staff member was friendly.

This was a bit more time consuming than I expected. A lot of listening to recorded messages. No public restrooms, but there is a cute gift shop.

I found the display about German P.O.W.s to be very interesting. For the first time visitor to Frankenmuth the museum is a must see. Yes, it has a lot of artifacts from a long time ago but also tells the town’s story. It’s inexpensive and won’t take up a lot of time and it’s interesting.

This small museum, which was clearly a professional effort some years ago, now it is very dated, in poor repair, dimly lit, dusty, and just neglected. No doubt the pandemic has been unkind to this museum.
When I say dated, it is because the story told in the exhibits suffers from what ends up being a whitewashed and sanitized narrative. Perhaps most distressing is the treatment (or rather non acknowledgement) of the native peoples who were presumably displaced by the German settlers. One exhibit about the early period celebrates Ojibwe conversion to Lutheranism, a highly settler centric view of American History that no longer should be in an America that is moving beyond the myth of “Manifest Destiny.”
Several interactive exhibits (which were really not historical) are broken, and the use of audio is quite intrusive. Some of the main areas, trying mightily to find a story, instead become an overwhelming amalgam of text, artifacts and photographs.
Finally, in a short term exhibit, considerable space is given to the world wars with a very self-conscious denial of any local sympathy to the German side, rather than an honest telling of what must have been a searingly difficult time. Generic materials ensue, such as a brief timeline of the war, uniforms, and an outsized tribute to 5 Frankenmuth veterans killed.
All in all, it’s time for a reimagining of the museum, with a more honest and clearer story. It’s a very small museum, but could be the center of a visit. Let’s hope the city and state step up and fund to reimagine, rebuild, and then keep it fresh and updated.
Just a footnote: The story here is not one of deception but an acknowledgement that making a really compelling and educational museum is a very difficult task, inevitably influenced by the politics and time it’s created. But good museums are ultimately very much worth doing.

We stopped in to see the Museum and they were celebrating their 175th Birthday! Very nice museum with a very good narration of the City's History. Also a nice gift shop for a souvenir.

I enjoyed the self guided tour of the museum. Nice displays, interesting information great hands on activities. Recorded narratives too long to keep my attention. The gift shop has a nice variety and very reasonably priced. The staff on duty friendly and helpful.

Worth the time for a brief tour. Set-up as "walk through" dioramas from various eras, and how residents lived. Some exhibits "hands on" for educational experiences by youth. Lumbering and trade exhibits interesting, even if one is not from the area.

The rest of the family waited outside while my history buff teen and I went through. It took about 10 min. To go through. Watch your step because the floor is bumpy in the 1st exhibit.

We didn't expect much when we saw how small the Museum was (the Museum store is also in the space) but were pleasantly surprised by how much was packed into such a small place. There weren't any other visitors so we could walk around the exhibits at our own pace and learn about the history of Frankenmuth. Highly recommend a visit.
