Stunning place - a place that is better than the photos you’ve seen in real life - we went at sunset and it was amazing to see the buildings lit up. Absolutely worth going to thanjuvur just to see this!

The ambiance, elegance, architecture, and carvings are all captivating. It is best to arrive early in the morning to escape the intense, oppressive heat.

"Brihad" means Large or Grand. The temple extends over 36 acres and was built more than thousand years ago. When Europe and Western world were in the dark ages, Bharat was a millenia ahead in terms of engineering, architecture and spirituality. A beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The 200 feet Gopuram is testament to bharatiya ingenuity a 1000 years ago. The temple has immense detailing. It will take a library to explain the beauty of the temple. Must visit.

We reached the Brihadeeswara temple by 7 am in the morning to beat the heat. It was very pleasant at that time. We came out after a fairly detailed visit by 8:30 am. No tickets required. The usual trousers with a shirt with an upper cloth would do. I went that way and had no issues. I saw many women wearing sarees as well as chudidar in the temple. It is a must visit temple in India. It's sheer magnificence, structure and architecture is simply amazing. We hired an excellent guide by name M. Selvam who was not only knowledgeable but was very passionate. He was also suggested as guide to us by a TripAdvisor Forum member and we were lucky to find him when we visited. First we visited Sri Parvati devi's temple, beautiful deity. The Shiva Lingam is gigantic and is about 29 ft tall, a gigantic Nandi about 16 ft tall. It's an amazing experience to see the Shiva Lingam and the Nandi. Also, there is a Sri Subrahmanya Swamy's temple constructed by the Nayak dynasty kings. It's so well carved and artistic. One can take pictures inside the temple premises but not in the garba griha. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hrs to see the temple in some detail. I am told that since this is a monument, people of other religious faiths can also visit the temple. Wearing footwear is not allowed inside the temple but there is a counter provided that keeps the footwear for a small fee of Rs.10. Overall it's an experience one will cherish on visiting this 'Tanjore Big Temple' as it is also called. I definitely recommend tourists to visit this temple.

The Brihadeshwara temple is also called the big temple in Tanjavur. It is easy to reach her with your own vehicle as well as by public transport. In case you have come here in your own vehicle you have a big parking opposite to the main entrance of the temple. The ambitious temple by Rajaraja – I begin in 1003 and completed in 1010 CE and was designed to represent a cosmic structure the Mahameru. The temple was built in the courtyard 240 by 120 meters in the ratio of 1:2 with granite block brought from distance of approximately 50 kilometers. The Shikhar is at a height of 60 meters and weighs 81 tons. Some of the must things to see here is the beautifully decorated entrance doors, the big nandi, for those who understand Tamil the backside of the temple gives a big script of how the financials of the temple were managed about the revenue and the expenditure. also visit or temple on the right side which has beautiful Shivlinga and Parvati.
The total time spent year could be approximately one hour 30 minutes. You need to wear traditional Indian dress to visit the temple. The premises has clean toilets which are available on right side the temple complex. Drinking water needs to be carried on your own. Cloak Room not available.

The place is amazing. How could they build such a thing in 12th Century is ... Chola's was surely a hugely developed civilization.
Avoid going on a religious day or a holiday as it attracts huge crowds.

Thanjai Periya Kovil or Peruvudaiyar Kovil are also the other names for this Temple. Lord Shiva - Brihadeeswara - is in a huge Lingam form in this temple. Our side the shrine you see the huge Nandhi structure in sitting posture facing the main shrine.

The premises is huge which is lot of open spaces, mandapams and other Shrines. The beauty of the temple is that the shadow of the tower does not fall on the floor during the day - any time of the year - such is the architectural beauty! Every time you visit you will discover a new beauty! A must visit place in your lifetime !
