Take altitude sickness medicine with you. Be ready for a jungle trek. Be aware on waterfalls and bird watching. Take care of yourself and have enough food and water

My Gosainkunda trek was an unforgettable, exciting, beautiful and challenging once-in-a-lifetime experience. Invited to attend a conference in Kathmandu, a friend from the USA attending the same conference asked if I would be interested in doing a Himalayan trek. I jumped at the chance, and although I was worried about the high altitude (I had never been to 4 600m before) I prepared well, consulted my doctor and made sure I had good advice. Our trek was organised by Bishnu Subedi, MD of 'Nature Trail' in Kathmandu. He was contacted through Travel Local. Bishnu was truly excellent in arranging exactly the right trek for our little group, giving accurate information, and advice on what to bring, how to prepare etc. We had a superb guide, the caring and competent Chhabi Lamichhane, who made sure we knew what was going on at every point, gave encouragement and kept us safe. We also had a wonderful young porter, Anzan Lamichhane, who earned his tips to pay for his college.
We were driven from Kathmandu to the village of Thulo Syabru, which took a whole day driving through steep mountainsides, arriving in the dark. In the morning we saw the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas on the Chinese border. We hiked up a steep mountainside to our first stop, through forests of giant trees and some rhododendrums, not yet flowering....on the third day it started snowing at the lunch stop; we pulled on our jackets and hiked on to the night stop at Gosainkunda lake. It was freezing at night; luckily we were well prepared. The next day we hiked past the spectacularly beautiful lake in the snow to the highest point of our trek, the 4 600m pass. After this pass there were steep stone stairways down, and paths up again which were icy and challenging; this was not a trek for the faint-hearted. With plenty of singing, as well as the help of Chhabi and Anzan, we managed the challenges and enjoyed the evenings in the teahouses. The lodgings varied a bit in quality, with the highest ones having squat toilets and frozen washing water; we coped with the cold at night (one night it was minus 15, we were told) with heavy duty down sleeping bags, sleeping bag liners, and blankets on top. In the lounge there was always a wood fire, and one night we had a group of young Nepalese guys singing and playing music with us.

I was able to go and see the waterfall below the lake which flows into timure and the sight is magnificient. the water is chilly and great for a bath. Stayed closeby for 3 days and was able to enjoy different sights of the lake melting and forming waterfall below.

The 4 days short trek offers a a scenic beauty and a gorgeous mountainous view. Brave the cold weather and enjoy every steps until you reach the sight of the beautiful frozen lake - Gosaikunda. Cold? Yes, but it offers less hustle and bustle of a peak season. I love it!

Trek To GOSAIKUNDA
First do plan your trek for atleast 4-5 days and do buy early morning tickets from KTM-DHUNCHE jeep/bus from Macchapokhari,Newbuspark
Dated: 22June,2019 - 26th June 2019
Day 1: Early morning 7:30am onwards vehicles are available and as Nepali Time it will leave from buspark at around 8am.
(Note: If you go via Jeep/tatasumo they will take less time than bus depends upon your luck on traffice jaam :) )
By around 2/3pm you will reach Dhunche (ht. 2030mtr).If you want to rest then you can stay at Dhunche where many hotels are available and or else like me start your trek and target to reach till Deurali (place where only one hotel is available). Since monsoon started so it rained and we were walking upwards along with raincoats on. You need around 2/3 hrs time to trek upwards till Deurali(ht 2625m). Eat dalbhat and have a goodnight sleep so that you get pumped up for tomorrow.
Day2:
Always start your trek as early as possible as to skip the sun(ladies tan you see). Woke up at 5:15 am got ready packed bags and start to trek upwards around 6:30am after tea biscuits breakkie. Please do carry water so that you get hydrated througout. After an hour and so you will reach Dhimsa (ht 3007m) have a rest then again hike upwards then after an hour you will reach beautifulplace called Chandanbari(Singompa) (ht 3200m) which have plenty of hotel, cheese factory with beautifulwooden homestay with a good view. You can buy churpis or yak cheese if you want but i didnt buy just clicked photos with the yak and cheese.
Eat dalbhat so that “Dalbhaatpower24hr”. After clicking photos and all stuffs hike towards Cholangpati (ht 3584m) with slow walk at around 2:30pm. Throughout the hike chocolates, tirauras and bhujiyas helped alot. Then at around 5pm finally reached the nightstay place called Laurebina (ht 3900m) which have only 3 hotels with yumm food. The place from where beautiful view of Langtang range can be seen. After a good black marich tea and rest you can enjoy the bornfire along with the hotel person and other guests. Had fun listening to the stories about Gosaikunda(ht 4380m). I was excited for tomorrow as after 3.5 hrs uphill trek we were going to reach our Final destination (Gosaikunda). After a long day slept well with good vibes for tomorrow.
Day 3:
Early to bed early to rise makes person to reach on time.We hike till Buddha Mandir which was steep upward hill then with breath taking views of Mt.Langtang, hills, waterfalls and nature we were just mesmerized and pumped up. Finally after all the upward and downward hills pheww reached Gosaikunda at around 9:30am. Trust me its worth the walk the place is beautiful and also very very peaceful. We went near by inside the kunda and took bath for about only 1 min as the water was freaking cold but thankfully it was sunny day then workshipped Lord Shiva and was just happy to be there. Clicked photos and enjoyed the view as much as we can then Hunger no longer ate food and then we trek backwards to Laurebina. Then downwards trek was pain in legs and it was too tiring. Finally reached Chandanbari at around 5:30 pm stayed for night there took hot shower and ate food. There was no energy left as we were like hell tired but was very happy with the day overall. Slept in a blink of an eye :)
Day 4: Again trek downwards till we reach Dhunche. No Pain no gain and finaly we reached Dhunche at around 1pm. We were hungry and tired as hell so thought of staying night at Dhunche to try Tongba.( its optinal if you reach on time till 1pm you will get vehicles to go back ktm).We booked hotel room, booked tickets to reach ktm,ate food along with tonga and had a wonderful sleep.
Day5: Woke up pack up and move towards vehicle counter. The vehicle(bus/jeep) moves from Dhunche at around 7:30am and reached ktm finally at 2pm.
Had a wonderful trek experience and enjoyed everybit except the legpain :D
Note:
1) Expenses for 4-5 days will be 6-7k only for me including fooding and lodging
2) Do take medicines,sunscreen lotion,raincoat,walking stick
3) walk with rest and proper food and hydration so that you are away from altitude sickness
4) You can have horse ride service from Chandanbari to Laurebina or budhhamandir and viceversa but horses are less in number and prices ranges of horseride is from Rs 3500(optional)
5) Travel light and enjoy the most

This is one of the difficult trek where in the span of 10 kilometer you go from altitude of 2000m to 4400m. But every pain you endure is worth in gold while watching mesmerizing view of Gosaikunda Lake.

Hi Sebastian I am planning to follow your route on 21st August this year. It seems it might be a bit wet and cold at night but not too bad. I intend to spend an extra night at Gosainkunda before the pass. Is this a good idea please? I’m in Melbourne on 0418511217 if you have a min to chat sometime.

Hi Ram, I'm going to Gosaikunda for 9 days trekking in April. I hired a guide but the communication is not that good so I would love to better understand what should I bring to this trekking. I'm most confused about the boots I should hear as there has a big range of boots available in the market. Should I go for a light and flexible option or a harder one, less flexible and stronger to unpaved paths?
thanks
Is it necessary to hire guide during trek?Where can i bought the national park permit?

Hello,
I am wondering what type of accommodations are available on or near Gosainkunda for someone on a budget? Is there any opportunity to stay on a farm and help out the farmers or do other work in exchange for lodging?
Thank you so much for your time.
