Must visit place if you can get there! You will need stamina, a good endurance to high elevation and plenty of water!

This is not an easy trek which took us approximately 7 hours to complete. There are many upward slopes since it is the trek from lower elevation (Jomsom - 2,700 above sea level) to higher elevation (Muktinath - 3,800 above sea level). Some parts of the trek are rocky and dusty jeep road. Hence, good trekking shoes are essential to avoid sprained ankle, with plenty of fluids required. Walking poles can be helpful too. Good that we engaged Eco Nepal Adventure with good experiences tour guide and porter that made our trekking less strenuous and more enjoyable with scenic paths and stunning views. Also, some part of the trek is easier since it is asphalt road. We had a good panoramic view of Kagbeni Village on the way along this trek. Having said that, returning trek from Muktinath to Jomsom on the next day was much easier since it was a descending trek. The breathtaking views is the biggest motivation for this trek.

People who are spiritual and with
good will power can proceed without any hesitation. Half the way by pony which is very adventurous and not dangerous followed by walking ,climbing and relaxing enjoying the scenery around. Once you step into the temple you remember nothing but the grace of the Lord Padrinath who has blessed us with good climate. Do try. It is not bad as you think. Only chose right tour operators and right time. All the best.

The Jomsom Muktinath trek is quite easy but can easily be made a little challenging!

You land in Jomsom, which is at 2760 meters, not quite high altitude, but then you have probably come in from Pokhara, which is 1400 meters, so the change is quite significant. It is best to stop here for a day, walk around slowly, make a trip to the nearby Lake Dhumba and rest here for the night.

Walk to Kagbeni the next day, it is about 12 kms and at a height of 2800 meters, so you are still getting used to the altitude without undue strain. Kagbeni is a biggish village with lots of options for lodges, so it is a natural place to halt on this trek. The route followed can be along the Kaali Gandaki river bed for a while and then on to the main Jomsom Muktinath road. It is very windy, so make sure you have suitable clothing.

Walk to Ranipauwa the next day, a distance of about 13 kms; after a brief rest, visit Muktinath temple which is about a kilometre from here, but yes, there is a steep climb. Ranipauwa is pretty well equipped with hotels and guest houses across different price ranges, so it is worthwhile to stop for the night here.

We came back via Lupra, which made the trek a trek, else it was walking along the road all the time. The trek to Lupra is about 9 kms, but it involves a steep ascent followed by a steeper descent which can be somewhat tricky; however, we saw mountain bikers negotiating these slopes with ease. Lupra was the first village where there was no power cut, but also it did not have any wifi. Accommodation here is basic and limited, so book ahead of time. From Lupra to Jomsom is an easy level walk of about 8 to 9 kms.

We saw many trekkers going on to Marpha from Muktinath, but it depends upon your schedule and abilities. All in all, it is an easy trek, but I would like to share a few pointers.

Many locals at Jomsom wear masks because of the dust. You may also use one at least while in and around Jomsom.

Rest houses or lodges are pretty basic. Attached bathrooms are not the norm. And common toilets are Indian toilets, where you have to squat, and not everyone is comfortable doing that. Book ahead of time and use a reliable agency.

Wifi is generally available, but is almost always very slow. Electricity may fail, so carry a torch/flash light.

If you are flying into or out of Jomsom, be aware that flights get cancelled due to the weather: it is very windy and as the day progresses, the wind picks up speed and flights cannot land. If a flight gets cancelled, you get your money back and you have to find your own way back to Pokhara. There are buses and shared jeeps, but the journey takes 8 to 10 hours and the road is not tarred all the way. The thing to do is to book the earliest flight possible, they have the least chances of cancellation.

There are two airlines operating the Pokhara-Jomsom route, Tara Air and Summit Air. We travelled in one while going and the other while coming, and there is nothing to choose between the two. The max checked in baggage weight is 10kgs, but they are not too strict about it.

All in all and enjoyable experience.

Since my childhood, I was so fascinated to this destination. Late December 2018, I with my friends got chance to visit this holy place. I was mesmerized by the place due to its significance and the natural beauty it possesed. I recommend everyone to visit Muktinath once in your lifetime.

20 plus kilometre trek is absolutely breathtaking. With beautiful mountain range, it’s paradise for photography enthusiasts. Proper roads yet to be laid. Need to pass though some small villages.

The trek between Muktinath to Jomsom, passing by Kagbeni, the most common way, is now a road. If you want to make a real trekking connection those villages, is better go by Lupra, on a 5 hours walk.
Passing by that pitorestic village, ignore the signals and cross the suspension bridge to arrive on the new road on the way to Jomsom. That’s the section of road you can’t avoid.

I took a shared Jeep from Jomsom to Muktinath early in the morning as recommended by Hotel Tilicho owner then trek down to Kaghbeni which took me approximately 2 hours easy walk through Jharkot village which might be a shortcut way. The view through out the trek was stunning with full range of Himalayas, beautiful landscape and streams. I felt lucky to visit ancient, sacred and unique Gumpa (Buddhist temple) in Kaghbeni village which was built in year 585 (as per Nepali calendar, now is year 2076). We then tried get a jeep or bus from Kaghbeni to Jomsom (recommend by hotel owner) however it was bit difficult get a public vehicle in mid day. We then tried to walk down little further however due to extreme wild wind, dusty and sandy small pebble hit our face and made us extremely difficult to walk through out from the Kali Gandaki Gorge which continue to Jomsom. It may be the deepest canyon in the world, with a depth of around 22,309 feet (6,800 m). Luckily, we were able to get a jeep from Eklobhatti which is 2-3km away from Kaghbeni then reached to Jomsom. I would recommend to walk down from Muktinath to Kaghbeni but Do NOT recommend anyone to trek down after noon (12:00pm) from Kaghbeni to Jomsom when wild wind starts to blow.

I had a great time trekking to the forbidden kingdom of Nepal, or so as it is known. There are quite a few hotels at Jomsom and Kagbeni, all dedicated to providing good stay and food to trekkers. The locals are friendly, you get to meet a lot of other trekkers en route, esp. if you are going solo. The views are just breath taking. I recommend going before or after winter to experience light to medium snowfall.
